The Sailor and the Devil (1967) Errol LeCain / Richard Williams / Professor Alex Bradford
I was shocked to learn that he died a few days ago. He never got to finish his final project. RIP, Richard Williams.
So sad best animater ever
I think this short is super endearing... I love how simple the shapes are in the character designs, this has a very 50s-60s esque art style, but the animation is much better than popular TV cartoons of the era.
It looks like something Genndy Tartakovsky might've watched as a kid
Tartakovsky and definitely Craig McCracken.
Shame we don't have the full thing, cool little animation
i’m so glad this channel uploaded again! i love seeing Richard William’s undiscovered or overlooked animation pieces.
They are a true work of art
Agreed
Joshua Sage cool
Looks a heck of a lot better than the previous video of "The Sailor and the Devil"
You're damn right.
@@TheThiefArchive Hopefullt a film print can be found and better restored
Looks like something straight of a Seseme Street short. Neat stuff, thought.
Why does this remind me of Samurai Jack for some reason?
The art style is pretty similar. Satan also bares a resemblance to Aku.
Apparently, most of the cartoon was done by Errol LeCain but a Richard Williams staff member named Sergio Simonetti (who got credit on the Christmas Carol special made by them) assisted Errol on the film
I kinda liked this short, since this was made by one of the same directors who made Roger Rabbit and I kinda liked the UPA-esque style here,I don't think it's from 1967,By judging the roman numerals in the opening credits at the beginning of the toon,MCMLXVI, It states that the cartoon was made in 1966.
McCraeTheMediaLover1999 Production on the film likely began in 66 & was finished in 67
This is my jam!
Rip Richard Williams
Yep
Great stuff! Especially nice now that there's no overlapping frames.
Great to see another upload on this channel.
Very interesting video
sailing epic style
Good find! Glad you're uploading again!
Just curious if anyone is aware of any connection between these animators and School House Rock. Something about the style feels like it fits with that series.
P.S. any confirmation that there is animation from the incomplete copy? Or did the animation end after the first chorus?
RIP Richard Williams….
Wow that's awesome Wow that's awesome!!
Are you sure this is incomplete? That seems like the ending to me. At most, there could be some end titles missing.
I have seen Richard Williams doing very well, It was still unfinished personal works, Nearly 5 decades ago, With rare animated video clips ever found the internet.
There's a blog which includes screenshots from the users copy (a different quality film print of sorts). One of the screenshots is a angry expression of the devil that isn't present in this copy
What is that come from
Hey I’m here to ask about the Arabian nights early workprint
Did Richard Williams co-directed with Errol Le Cain for this short film?
Errol LeCain animated this film for Richard Williams. The BFI now hold a film copy.
@@TheThiefArchive darn that copy was never released.
@@TheThiefArchive That's amazing! Nice!

Okay
Sailor And The Devil
One, two, three, four, everybody let's go
Gather ‘round me children.
Listen to what I have to say
And I'll tell you about a very unusual day.
It's the day I met the devil
And how I came his way.
When I was a young man
Sailing on the sea...
When I was a young man,
Fishin' on the sea.
One day it turned to darkness
And hid my boat and me.
And a storm rose.
Then the wind began to howl.
The rain began to pour.
Lightnin' flashed like I'd never seen before.
Lighting up the sky my eyes opened wide.
There were waves as high as mountains on every side.
Knew that I would drown
If the boat went down.
But I'd made it out of wood
From the strongest trees
And she rode those waves with grace and ease.
So I stopped my crying.
I was safe and wouldn’t be dying.
Old Davey Jones wasn't gonna have my boat.
When the storm had passed,
And dark became light,
I checked my little boat over to see if she was alright.
She was.
But we had been blown miles off our course
and we were sailin’ on a sea that no one ever sailed before.
The water was bright blood red
And all the fish that I could see were dead.
Bubbles of gas spoutin’ up everywhere
Makin it hard for a man to breathe
In that kind of air.
Oh where oh where in the world
Could this evil sea be?
Then, through the smelly fog,
I saw land.
It must have been created by an evil hand.
A terrible place.
The worst place I’ve yet to see.
And I wondered “who could the king of this place be?”
And I wonder who the king of this place could be.
Just off the shore, the water boiled.
From behind the rocks, screams a chord.
Moaning and groaning,
The likes of which you’ve never heard
Or would ever want to hear again.
It was an island full of people
Filled with misery and pain.
I turned my boat around
To make a quick getaway.
And a chill ran up my spine
When I heard a loud voice say,
“HAY YOO!”
But I didn’t reply.
I was too scared
To look him in the eye.
He cried, “YOO GOTTAWAY FRUM MEE THISS TYME”
“BUTT YOOL BEE BAK AFTER YOO DYE”
I looked around and saw Satan standing there,
Sticking people with his fork
And pulling out their hair.
So unless you want to end up like these people on this isle,
You’d better change your ways
And think like this once in a while:
That you’re gonna be good in what you do
And safe for the rest of your life.
I think Craig Mcracken's style was inspired by this
This manages to be somehow surprisingly cute and endearing, but also like a little eerie with how the tone shifts both in animation style and music.
Gotta love the animation. Looks like something from Cartoon network
Reminds me of clone high
I'm looking forward to watching all 357 videos on your channel. Richard Williams had an insanely prolific and influential career.
I'm not the only one getting South Park vibes right?
The movements are kinda similar as well as the Sailor possibly being compared to Chef. Of course different techniques are being used here but this limited animation look was common in the 50s & 60s, eventually influencing later works and even some productions today
This short seemed to end at a decent point, what else happened after the fade out because it seems like the story had already reached it's conclusion?
There are some images in this edit, which suggest there was a bit more with the Devil, and a wrap-up with the "children."
Richard Williams is the wonderful British animators are good stunning and good smoother animation around 7 decades. But Williams got health issues and cancer are passing is very peacefully. I’ve avenging aware with the uncles are good stunning animation
The music kinda reminds me of Heroes and Villains by The Beach Boys
I wonder if anyone owns a full copy of this film. It’s probably one of my favourite animated films from the UK
Cool
It must have because where did the screencaps of the short comes from?
@@LewisDavies2007 I know what you mean. I've seen those screenshots so someone must have a film print of it, a more complete version too as there's a frame of the devil which isn't in this copy
True. But if there's someone out who does own a copy of the short, I think it should be up on the internet like UA-cam.
it sounds like chef
So, "be good and save the rest of your life". Great film and man left.
Yeah this is good
R.I.P. Richard Williams. You were and still are one of the best animators to ever live.
He's singing and talking at the same time.
I love it!! Kinda speechless, it's so charming. Yes, thank you for uploading
1:25
That was delightful, thanks for posting it!
Kinda looks like a 1960's Southpark prototype
5:01 whats up with this scene? I can't see it in the actual film unless I'm missing something
Oh man! I forgot about this short!
Very catchy! :D
Great to see this type of animation from Richard Williams
I came here after hearing did Richard Williams died
the organ is eerily cheery
This guy has a totally ripped upper body, but you can tell he always skipped leg day.
3:29
This was an interesting peace of history.
6:04 Thats Scary
This gets a A- cause this is pretty timeless and worth watching
RIP Richard
Yeah dad passed away
♪ and I tell you about a very unusual day ♪ 0:34
THIS GAVE ME NIGHTMARES!!!😱😱😱😱😱😱😣😣😣
Did anyone ask Richard about this when he was still alive? I really wish I could at least have an outline of what happens!
There's a complete print of this at the BFI now, although it hasn't been seen by the public.
Inspirador❤
Cool that this was uploaded on my birthday last year
love this its art
