Always a pleasure to listen to Ian Taylor (and you, of course, Dan lol!) I think Southgate missed a massive opportunity this time round. The World Cup in Russia was kind to us. We all know that. We had the easiest side of the draw out there; but we had the same easier side of the draw here on home territory for the Euros. It should've been nailed on that it was "ours." Southgate had the most frightening attacking squad in Europe available to him but all he cared about was defending. Even against Denmark (and all due respect to Denmark) he allowed them back into the game and made them look 10 times better than they actually were when he subbed his sub (Jack) to go to 5 at the back instead of going for the jugular and killing the game off. Denmark were knackered and played the second half of extra time with 10 men. Grealish could've scored goals for fun but no. Southgate wanted to bore us all to death and keep us needlessly biting our nails down to the bone. I don't think we'll do any good in Qatar either because Southgate will go out there to defend first and foremost too (in insanely ridiculous heat to try and play football in.) Southgate's a lovely bloke but he'll never be a successful England manager unless fate - or more likely fluke - plays a major part. He's got no bottle. It's a simple as that. UTV VTID

Qatar won’t actually be in insane heat by the way. The reason for it being played in November is that the temperature ranges from 16-25 degrees

I think England should have bought Grealish on at half time on the left and switched Sterling onto the right. Sterling has been devastating from the right in the Euros. Mason Mount hardly touched the ball in the final, that should not have been allowed to continue, there were plenty of other options. Southgate was always too negative, especially in the final. We should not have sat back on the second half; Juergen Klinsman said at half-time that England should attack and go for the second goal; we did the opposite.

Indeed - I'm no expert but it seemed clear that Emerson was their weakest player so you needed to put our best player on him (Sterling), which left a space on the left. Jack, Foden, even Rashford (though he's clearly been injured). But playing Mount meant that Emerson was not pressurised and he was often playing like a wing back. Main point is right: somehow Southgate has to learn when to take the handbrake off.

If England are going to win competitions then GS is going to have to learn the art of when to take the shackles off in an attacking sense.

About to watch... If you haven't asked Ian Taylor in this pod if Jack is definitely staying I'm going to be very upset

Grealish and Foden barely played any minutes in the entire tournament it was far to negative. I want Dean Smith to go nowhere of course but just imagine how he would get England playing with that group of players.
