Fun fact: the guy on the flute is Jeremy Steig, who played as the Paid Piper in Shrek 4. His father was William Steig, writer of the first Shrek novel, later adapted into an animated movie.
The flute riff came from Jeremy Steig's 1970 song _Howlin' For Judy_ then it was sampled in 1994 by the Beasties then in 2010 Steig played the flute parts in the movie. A 40 year saga.
Fun fact this is their trippiest music video

Doesn't matter what mood I'm in, the Beastie Boys always makes me happy. Love how they showed the world that music can surely be fun
Heck yeah. They weren't showing off their cars, money, girls or trying to act tough. They were just 3 friends enjoying their craft and having fun! Every video they made just looked like a good time

The Beasties, to me, are like the Beatles...every once in a while, there comes a night where I realize we can never see them perform together ever again. And I get angry. And then I get sad. And then I just put on their albums until the sun comes up.
Maybe MCA and John Lennon are doing a collabo in The Great Beyond. ;)
I was their last show at Bonnaroo. No one knew MCA had cancer. They just rocked it and left everyone smiling. And then the news came later. Blew me away

Skream - Rutten
Brief flute resurgence.
Are you talking about this cut, or the original soul tune they ripped it from?
Jethro Tull would like to have a word with you.
Ripped and made it cool.
There were 4 samples in the song: ‘Sure Shot’ by the Beastie Boys (1994)
-------------------------
1. ‘Howling For Judy’ - Jeremy Steig (1969) (Which is the flute riff looped throughout the song along with the double bass riff in the background.)
------------------------
2, ‘The Funny Sides of Moms Mabley (Side 1)’ - Moms Mabley (1963) (Which is the record being scratched in the bridge of the song and the vocal sample saying: “Aww yes, indeed it’s fun times” at 1:56)
------------------------
3. ‘Rock The House’ - Run D.M.C (1985) (Which are the drum sounds used on top of the Jeremy Steig sample in the outro of the song and the vocal sample saying the lines: “B-Boys! B-Girls” at 3:05)
------------------------
4. 'That's Impossible' - Little Caesar’s TV Commercial (1993) (Which is the dog barking sound effect used right when the song starts.)
This album is etched into my soul, heard it several hundreds of times yet I hear new details and nuances every single listen. Recently I discovered a bass-line that I had somehow missed; instead of playing it on my reasonably fancy hi-fi, it was revealed to me on my low-budget sound-bar at work. This album has so many layers, so many styles, and such oozing abundance of talent and genius - this is something we will not witness again in the future.
It’s such a treat to hear something for the first time even though you’ve heard it a hundred times. There are so many nuances to their music.
"I've got more rhymes than I've got gray hairs,
and that's a lot, because I've got my share."
True words if any rapper feels old. Rest in peace, MCA!
Mike D will Rock a Block Party till your hair turns Gray!
This is basically my source of inspiration - when current music seems too overproduced and without authentic substance I come back to this...the lyrics, the beats, the flow, the voices and the unique and unpredictable visual storytelling always gets me attention...'cause you can't, you won't. And you don't stop!!!
They didn't just pop it out, they crafted it. They may have just dropped a track sometimes, but I know they frequently just geeked out on it and PLAYED with it, until they got something entirely insane and overloaded with cool, chill grooves.
Cringe comment. "The beats" is a tell. You haven't a clue what you are talking about. You don't know that these "beats" are samples for old songs.
@@clvrswine Wauw, you're very angry. Obviously you're the expert and I respect you for sharing your knowledge - that's always a nice gesture.

I don't have the words to describe the vibe that I get every time I hear these guys....in my early twenties I used to work in the coolest Rock Bar in Lisbon called "Johnny Guitar" (this in the early 90's), and this bar was well knowned by his heavy environment but really it was a place where you could see Punks, Heavies, Gothics, Rastafarians, Skinheads, Grungers, Hipsters, well, all kind of people hanging out in peace at least 80% of the time (at least inside) and the music was also equally ecletic, you could be hearing Motorhead or Pantera and sudenlly it would change to House of Pain or Beastie Boys...and man...seeing all that different people going crazy listening to "Sabotage" or "Sure Shot" it was a experience that I still won't forget after more than 30 years....good music it's good music, it doesn't matter what genre it is made and this guys were just incredible!!! I'm a metal music fan and hate rap,but these guys I can listen to their songs over and over. RIP Adam Yauch!🙏
Man I gotta say it limits your worldview if you outright “hate” any music genre. It’s perfectly acceptable to like metal and other music genres. For some reason it seems like metal fans are particularly bad about limiting themselves to just one genre. That’s just so limiting when there is SO MUCH INCREDIBLE music out there from ALL Genres. I really like metal. I prefer more of the Hardcore sound-Black Flag, Bad Brains etc. but I can enjoy Slayer and love rap, country, pop. The “Metal” group I LOVE from more modern music is a band called “Torche”-absolutely incredible and unique sound. Try to expand your horizonsz. There are objectively “good” examples of all genres.
As for Hip Hop, I’m guessing it’s the energy? Lyricism? Inventiveness? Of the Beastie Boys that causes you to enjoy them? I’d suggest OutKast for sure if you like those three aspects of the Beastie Boys. As for current artists, Run the Jewels is a group of two guys that should blow you away- Killer Mike-one of the most intelligent and imposing lyricists ever and El-P-one of the greatest producers ever who is a great rapper as well.
@@GoZags43 I’m definitely a metalhead but I listen to almost everything. Great music is great music. You are 100% correct. I listen to everything from Pantera to Smokey Robinson. Pretty much anything from the 50’s to the late 2000’s. Disco, Funk, Hip Hop/ Rap, Classic Rock etc. There is no favorite genre for me. I’m a chameleon of musical tastes and I love it. I’d hate to be tied to just one genre. There’s so much great music out there.
