A lot of the people in these comments do not understand how engines work or they have some sort of complex about European/Japanese cars being superior. First of all, there is much more to an engine than displacement. Having a large displacement does not imply that an engine has low fuel efficiency or high horsepower/torque. Things like compression ratio, camshaft profile, intake/head design play a much bigger role in determining power output. Also, when you view this vehicle in context, its fuel efficiency was comparable to contemporary European competitors as was its power output. Was it "good"? No, not really, but the idea that this engine MUST make high power/torque figures because of its displacement is way too simplistic and it's seemingly low power output was not due to inept design.
My 6.6 liter Ford V8 from 1979 was castrated in terms of horsepower because of emissions laws. Even in its gutless, 8:1 compression ratio state, with low rev cams, it still produces 315 ft. lbs. of torque at only 1800 RPM. You will notice that even the most gutless big displacement engines of the late 1970's were still major torque producers. A 460 in a Lincoln in 1978 was at its lowest horsepower output ever. Still did 350 ft. lbs. of torque at only 1600 RPM. Remember, that same 460 CID, 7.6 liter motor was producing 350 horsepower and 500 ft. lbs of torque before emissions laws castrated it throughout the 1970's, so one also has to realize that those same motors were capable of a lot of street horsepower, at medium RPM, before later restrictions made them look bad in the late 70's. If anything, the lessons in the power bands and reductions in power, and looking at those motors at their strongest in the late 60's/early 70's compared to their lower horsepower ratings in the late 70's is a lesson in exactly what you talk about.
@@kingduckford Yeah you're right, emissions were the biggest limiting factor in the late 70s but the torque was definitely always there. What a lot of people don't realize is that American manufacturers didn't put out those motors with max horsepower in mind. They often sent them out with emissions devices that were rushed into production, choked heads, choked intake and low compression ratio like you mentioned. With just a few bolt-ons, you could easily double the horsepower of a big displacement motor. Sure, American engines may have lagged a little in terms of fuel efficiency but that's easily understandable when you see that fuel efficiency was not a concern for American manufacturers until after 1973. In any case, people can compare a Chevy 454 or Cadillac 500 to their 1.5L Honda Civic all day, but I already know which of those engines I'd rather work on...

That depends on the year, actually. This looks like a 1970 Eldorado, which was rated at 400 horsepower. It was one of the most powerful engines available on any car at the time.
@Morten frost Hansen, Little power? I don't think you realize... It may not produce immense horsepower, at 244hp, but makes immense torque. 744 Nm at 3000rpm. Simple car, easy to work on, much maintenance money saved, which can go towards fuel costs. And when you have a car that can easily last several decades, you save money not having to purchasing a new vehicle. If the car has a proper gearbox, preferably a manual, you can drive relatively economically if you stay under 2500rpm. Even my 1.8 Suzuki with 152nm torque doesn't mind shifting at 2000-2500, so i would personally stay nice and low on revs with the Cadillac. Hell! Do some weight reduction work like replacing steel panels with aftermarket aluminium ones, and you'll have a great daily driver i think.
@@CobraPhobic big blocks are reliable yes, but the only reason why it has so little hp was because it was detuned to meet emissions of the time.
