1:30 I've discovered evidence that Poe's claim to have written "The Raven" was merely a brazen scam. He scooped the real author by three days, striking out that author's pseudonym and replacing it with his own name, in the daily newspaper he worked for. The real author, who published it in the new literary journal "American Review" in February 1845 under the pseudonym "(blank) Quarles," was Mathew Franklin Whittier, younger brother of famous Quaker poet John Greenleaf Whittier.
