BUILDING MY NEW SKIFF

  • This is a short video with some of the process while I was building my skiff. It took me a year to build the skiff and it is the first one I have ever built. I would like to build another since you learn a lot when you do something for the first time. The skiff does very well in the water but there are things that I would do differently the next time as with a lot of things in life. The skiff will run 42 mph GPS indicated speed. I also built the stainless steel trailer that I haul it on. Hope everyone enjoys the video as much as I have enjoyed my skiff. Until the next one, thanks for watching thumbs up if you like the video and subscribers welcome.

      Good day !! I thank you for you nice comment!! I am not sure that it is the best but I appreciate that. I literally built this skiff from intuition!! No plans or anything we’re used. I can tell you that whatever you have in mind as far as size goes , do the build proportions on 1/3rds. Meaning if you want 16’ long then make the width at least 5’ wide, so on and so on. Make you sides in proportion to the width, unless you just want some really tall sides for some reason. Totally flexible as far as more goes, but try to stay at or above .

    I truly appreciate that you built the boat from your mind. I want to build one and I'm glad that I was able to see this done. The only question i have is can I use any wood or what would you suggest that is affordable for the frames and ply-wood?

    • @JAMESHOPKINSIBXCNC

      gvyberv I used pine boards and regularly 1/4” plywood then applied the two layers of fiberglass and then sprayed about 20 coats of gel coat on top inside and out.

    GREAT SKIFF like the slight deadrise in the bow- couple of questions
    Where in NC did you get the marine ply and how much per sheet and how much did the boat cost overall?
    Secondly- where is the follow up video of the ride, draft, drive- stats on planning ect

    • @JAMESHOPKINSIBXCNC
      @JAMESHOPKINSIBXCNC  5 років тому +5

      I did not use any special materials to build this skiff. If you notice the plywood is just your ordinary run of the mill 1/4" pine variety. I looked for some Cypress to build the skiff but had little success in finding any that was affordable. I have not made any video of the boat in the water, I guess I have been a bit side tracked with my other passion, machining, to make one. The boat handles well, and considering the weight of the engine, batteries, and gas tank all being in the stern, it has a pretty decent sit to it in the water. I learned a lot of things building this first skiff, and there are many things I would do differently. as for plans there are none, I just built the boat. My great uncle was a boat builder and as a child I watched him many hours as I did my father as he did a lot of boat repairs. I grew up half on land and half on the water.....LOL!!

    Very nice build and your glass work was done well. Very sturdy with heavy ribs and flooring, brass fittings below water line. Hope ya have years of fun with it. Question: being a glass over wood boat does a dent in the glass sandwich water and rot the wood ? thanks :)

    • @JAMESHOPKINSIBXCNC
      @JAMESHOPKINSIBXCNC  5 років тому +3

      MegaBait56 yes if the glad is fractured or punctured water can seep in and cause wood rot. Also just glass alone is not waterproof so keep in mind when glassing it is a good idea to seal wit gel coat that has wax in it. There are two layers of glass on this build inside and out, and I applied 30 layers of gel coat, the first 26 layers I applied with a medium mat roller and sanded between each layer. The last four layers I sprayed on applying each layer at flashing point to avoid sanding then let it cure for a week. Then I sanded, and blocked then buffed.

    • @JAMESHOPKINSIBXCNC
      @JAMESHOPKINSIBXCNC  5 років тому +1

      MegaBait56 there is an epoxy you could dig out the wood and back fill, there is also one called wood rot repair, it’s a thin viscosity resin you pour in and the wood if dry absorbs it and solidifies, just some extra ideas. Good luck on your project. Also consider laminated robin woven to replace your wood.

    • @MegaBait1616

      @@JAMESHOPKINSIBXCNC , thank you, i know about the filler epoxy which i have used in the past for smaller repairs but on the wood to support the motor i'm going to replace them with the laminate type. Don't want any twisting in the shaft or worse. The deck i'm going all synthetic with glass on top n bottom with a grit on the top. Sucks when i'm fishing and ya feel a soft spot under your feet. I have my boat now in a heated well made tent poking around all the fiber-glassed wood. The hull is totally thick glass as is most of the boat except for some support areas that are wood over glass. She's a single diesel down the middle that cruises in the low 20's knots and has been good to me. All hardware is bronze above n below the waterline. Thank you again..........

      There were no plans for this boat. I built it from scratch out of my head. The boat is 15 foot 6 inches and 42 inches wide on the bottom, total width is 48 inches across the stern. I learned quite a lot building this skiff. Think in thirds when building, 1/3 rd the length for width for example.

    Nice boat , looks a bit heavy ? , how's the boat holding up , did you do another boat since this build , I'm thinking of doing a stitch & glue build , but I want to make it wider and 14 to 16 ft long , have also thought about just using the stitch and glue as a mold and doing a fiberglass hull out of the mold and painting it instead of gelcoat , I have to find out about registration on a homemade boat hull yet ?

    • @JAMESHOPKINSIBXCNC

      Dave Scheer no I have not built another boat yet, this boat is 15.5’ weight is comparable to its size. Boat is very solid and runs about 45 mph. Very smooth. Registration is not that hard to do, you have to apply for a title and then you can get your registration easily.
