I recently chopped my Sisterlocks off because I made some of those same mistakes & I was not told right until later in my journey which was too late by that time. But I will be starting over with much needed knowledge information.

    😁 I agree with you on the hot water vs cold. My first consultant recommended room temperature water to wash my 3a-3b locs... 1 wash per month is what I did, also she recommended that I didn’t wash my hair in the shower.. it’s totally different with my current consultant.

    😃 great tips Nia and lots to consider, thanks. I always dilute my shampoo with very warm water (never hot) in a big jug, and tip my head upside down over my bath, then soak my locs with the mixture and massage it in. I do this and usually by the 3rd time I get a decent lather - and then rinse until the water runs clear always using tepid water. My final rinse is always with cold water. I've been dying my crown regularly for years so I'm all about adding and sealing in moisture in to my strands. This method works for me because I found that I needed to use a lot of shampoo straight from the bottle just to work up a decent lather all over my head (because I have very thick hair) but in doing so, my strands were becoming extremely dry and crunchy. But this method means I'm still getting my crown nice and clean all over, but without wasting product. Win-win!

    ☺️ I like the themes!
    Literally just got some new products in the mail because I had a reality check with tip #2. This shampoo worked really well for me before, but I think I got a bad batch. At first I thought it was due to the hard water because I go to a university in an area with that, but even when I came back home and tried the shampoo, I could literally feel the shampoo add buildup to my scalp with each wash! Trashed it after that. Love the brand, but as a college student, I can’t be spending that much money on that one product only to have it messed up because it was a bad batch or even if it was the hard water that messed it up. Sad parting ways 🥲
    Both times I noticed the buildup I had to reach for someone else’s sulfate shampoo lol. Even though I feel some time of way about sulfates because of their source, shoot, it got the job done and done in one wash. Now I’m in experimenting mode and got some more affordable sulfate-free stuff (and just in time for Black Friday sales so my feelings won’t be hurt if they don’t work 😜). If I find no luck with sulfate-free stuff, I guess I’ll be going back to ol’ reliable sulfates 😭 And oh my goodness! I was debating getting Alikay Naturals for Black Friday, so it’s such a relief that I didn’t.
    Dr. Locs be having that good information, I enjoy their blog too!

      @Niaimani92  3 роки тому +1

      I remember being on that undergrad budget! I was relaxed when I started college, and thought going natural would be cheaper LOL! Lies! I will say it's nothing like a sulfate clean lol! It gets everything squeaky clean lol!

    Hey Nia,
    On point 3, conditioning - I agree that locs need something. My daughters locs are totally different texture to mine and hers get very dry.
    I tried deep conditioning, which was okay but I was so worried about buildup that I moved to hot oil treatments, I took Yannie’s advice on this and found that it worked - I like steaming her locs when I do it and only need to do so every 2/3 months.
    That works really well for her, my locs seem to need much less.

    • @Niaimani92
      @Niaimani92  3 роки тому

      Thank you for sharing! How do you steam locs? Is that just like sitting under a dryer? I am very intrigued by this.

    • @leeceyleece2406
      @leeceyleece2406 3 роки тому

      @@Niaimani92 oh I have a shower cap and then I sit under the heat cap that I bought on Amazon - it’s a plug in that heats up. If not, I’d go under a proper steamer like the hairdressers.

    I use Giovanni Tea Tree shampoo. Love it b/c it's on the natural side, not heavily fragranced, very refreshing, great for an itchy scalp, gently clarifies. I get a 1 liter/32 oz pump bottle from TJ Maxx for $13. They also have a body wash version that I find for $6 sometimes. The ingredients are similar. I use it as a face wash and to wash my reusable cotton rounds.
    For leave in conditioner, I water down the Curls Blueberry Bliss into a spray bottle ( 8 oz water to about 2 quarter sized amounts of leave in) and a bottle lasts about a year. I realized real quick that the liquid leave in conditioners were going to be too expensive to buy. I like to spray a lot.

    Once in the shower your body is used to the temp by the time you begin washing your hair, so just gradually turn the water to Luke warm. And just before turning the water off turn it to cool.

    So I wash my hair in my regular shower temp water, do a final hair rinse in cool water (well, compared to my boiling hot showers 🤣), and then do a final warm body-only rinse before I get out of the shower. Hi! Thank you so much =) ! Good question. So I wonder if it is more of a thing for small locs. I have had my locs for three years, and they still get a little weeee bit tangled at the roots, especially when I have a lot of new growth.
      With that said, I am not a loctician, but I would say that it is probably best to at least run your fingers through your locs to seperate them quickly after each wash. I can't see it hurting.
