I was a courier when I was at uni 30 years ago, before the internet took most of the work away. I remember carrying a $3 000 000 cheque from a brokerage to the stock exchange, and flowers to women who burst into tears in front of me, pets, all sorts. It was a much better way to pay my way through college than washing dishes or flipping burgers. I only almost died a few times, and ended up in hospital once. But it taught me all about the city (Melbourne, Australia), all its little nooks and crannies.
I rode for American Expediting in Philly around ‘93-‘94. It snowed my first day, and every Wednesday for a month. Great way to get to know the city three dimensionally. Almost died a few times but no regrets. I carried everything from guns, to drugs, to million dollar contracts in giant boardrooms in 1&2 Liberty. One of my regulars was picking up and running ads for a high-end brothel to the City Paper; crazy. I lived on fresh roasted cashews and Elliot’s Amazing Apple juice. Glad to see it’s still around. #771 aka 71 southern one
The most important thing is to have fun and if you think you look somewhat cool or you are confident in what you do than thats even better. I don´t do courrier rides theres just no demand in the country side but I guess when I´ll go to uni my fixedgear will be used for more than just commuting
I feel you on the stay dry out there part. Makes you wanna pick up a lime from the fruit basket and throw it at the back of their head and say oh sir! I saw it! It was the waitress over there did you not tip her? 😆
Easier maintenance long term if you know what you are doing and also you pace going aerobic or sub aerobic. Typical person on a bike 2-3 times a week will be spiking their heart rate up into fight or flight zones that tires you out quick
Also electric bikes aren’t necessarily faster at this job a lot of the efficiency is in movements the actual cycling part of how many watts you can sustain is only part of it

Yeah I think so too. Fuck it i was debating between a Wabi Classic Fixie or building my own...now I think its time to by the Steamroller frame and send it!@@humansweredesignedforbikes
Time Cycle is commissioned to remove these signs when they expire, and they get paid to do so. Otherwise they could remain posted for too long or become litter. This is as far as I know.
I would love to see this guy go electric! Maybe he's too used to coaster brakes, or wouldn't find it as fun. But it would seriously help him on the rough days when weather is bad or morale is low. I think Dan is cool!

I am a bike messenger from Amsterdam, Netherlands. All I see is a days work, and I love the concept you put out. Keep it up, keep pushing!
My highest respect goes out to you, it's a crazy city! Many people underestimate it!

you ARE cool, Dan.
stay dry out there ;)
I don't understand why you would tear down the no parking signs and how did you make $6.00 doing it?

@@humansweredesignedforbikes Gotcha. Thanks. I hate cars so I'm in favor of anything to screw them over. That's why I asked.

I agree that humans were designed for bikes. Well humans designed bikes for themselves, So... ya,
Why don't you replace the back hub with a 3-speed gearless hub?
He uses fixed gear to brake
3-speed gearless is a contradiction in terms.
Fixed is fun, low maintenance and more control
How come you are tearing down parking signs? Glad you get paid to do it. Just wonder what the deal is?
His company gets contacted to put up and take down temporary parking signs. They are taken down when the date passes or they aren't needed anymore.
@@humansweredesignedforbikes Love it! Thanks for helping me understand.
@@humansweredesignedforbikes probably way cheaper than sending out city workers too. Nice.

You'd run the battery out in 1/2 a day.
I’m guessing that’s a fixie. One gear, no brakes.

I don't recognize a single thing weird with the way he's talking, you need to get out more
