Karel Appel -Dizzy Gillespie And The United Nation Orchestra

Christiaan Karel Appel nació el 25 de abril de 1921 en Amsterdam donde su padre tenía una barbería. Estudió en Rejksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, y en la Academia de Bellas Artes durante la ocupación alemana. Sus padres se oponían a su deseo de ser artista y lo echaron de casa. A los catorce años ya pintó su primer óleo, un bodegón con frutas y cuando cumplió quince años, su tío Karel Chevalier, le regaló todo lo necesario para pintar y unas cuantas clases. En 1946, hizo su primera exposición en Groningen, Holanda. Tambien participó en la exposicion Jonge Schilders en el Museo Stedelijk de Amsterdam y creó un escándalo en el mundo del arte tanto en la prensa como en el público. En esta época estaba influenciado por Pablo Picasso y Henri Matisse, más adelante por Jean Dubuffet. En 1947, empezó a hacer esculturas, realizadas con varios materiales y pintadas en colores vivos como blanco, rojo, amarillo, azul y negro. Karel Appel se hizo miembro del grupo Nederlandse Experimentele Group in Holanda con los jóvenes pintores alemanes Anton Rooskens, Theo Wolvecamp y Jan Nieuwenhuys. El escritor belga Hugo Claus se uniría al grupo despues. En 1948, Appel se unió al grupo COBRA. Aunque este grupo no era muy popular en los Países Bajos pero si fue bien recibido en Dinamarca. En 1939,inspirados por la mitología danesa y nórdica, los artistas daneses habían empezado a hacer arte espontáneo. En 1949, Appel pintó un mural para una cafetería en Amsterdam. La obra titulada "Questioning Children", en la que se veían unos niños todavía sonrientes, aunque habian sido abandonados despues de la guerra, causó mucha controversia y puso tan nerviosos a los miembros del ayuntamiento que fue cubierto durante casi una década. Ante tantas reacciones hostiles, Appel se fue a Paris en 1950. Luego viajó a Méjico, Estados Unidos, Yugoslavia y Brasil. Pasó varios años entre Florencia y Nueva York. En Paris se hizo amigo de los pintores daneses Jorn y del poeta, y escritor flamenco Hugo Claus, quien en 1962 escribió un exhaustivo estudio de la obra de Karel. En la década de 1950, Appel se enamoró del jazz y pintó retratos de Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Count Basie, y Sarah Vaughan. En 1954 recibió el premio de la UNESCO en la Venice Biennale.

Appel murió el 3 de Mayo de 2006 en su casa de Zürich, Suiza.

Diz believed that the world must become one country. He was an outspoken member of the Baha’i Faith, (1863) which embraces all the world’s dominant religions as One. Baha’i also teaches that all people are one and equal . Persecuted in Iran to this day. Iran bans Baha’i from teaching and studying in Iranian universities, but these people will learn, educate and study. Diz believed in one world education system too. Diz was one with oneness.

There is a Psychiatric Hospital in Vienna, which emphasis on the art-creations of it's patients. I think the art-form is called 'art brut' - the autodidactic art of lay people, children and individuals with mental disabilities. This came to my mind while watching your presentation of Karel Appel. I ~ quite honestly have difficulties calling this art. But ~ who am I to judge ... ;o) ... right? Your choice of music however ... is suited excellently !!!

I am going to tell something... years ago, I was visiting ARCOmadrid, art contemporary- and suddenly I became in love with one painting. I didn´t know who was the painter. The picture was Karel Appel´s. The painting was in my mind for a long time...So, who can say?

Beauty (of anything) is always in the eye of the beholder. It so very much depends on the moment we find ourselves in. There should never be any judgement on what appeals to us at the time. All is good and valuable, if it feels good and valuable at the time.
