What an interesting story
I am glad that a quiet old age next to loving, although not related by blood, but close in spirit, is given to Helen as a gift for her self-sacrifice, diligence, sincerity, kindness to people! I want to believe that it was sent from God .

To the end I was hoping that Helen would come to her senses and realize that the worst you could do to a child is spoil him with too much concern. Teach a child to be hard working, honest. Help him. of course, but only to make him independent. Nothing more. Specially, never sell your house and buy something new on your child's name. Keep your own ownership. But as usual, our perfect narrator brings everything to order. I like the ending, as always. Thank you again.

It's easy for people to say, "Get rid of the addict, choose yourself" but it's not so easy to do. The son sounds like my brother's twin. Sixty-three years old, my brother still depends on my ninety-year-old Dad, even though he is lying in at home in hospice care as I write this. They both live with me. I could not turn my back on my brother out of my deep love and respect for my Dad, but I have paid the price. With addiction comes manipulation, and it is very hard for a parent to turn their back on their "child" and I would never turn my back on my Dad. Add to the fact that my brother has other issues, including mental health, he is the definition of a toxic person. Please pray for me that I have the strength to remove him from my home when the time comes. There is a limit to being my brother's keeper.

It seems that Helen should have stayed with Peter and stop blaming herself for her sons weakness and believing that it was her fault that he had turned out that way. I do feel that you don't turn your back on your family but I don't think she did him any favors by catering to him. Another betrayal! Valerie didn't deserve that. What a happy ending for both women. Thank you.
