- We've found a solution to money wasted on farm store round bale feeders that end up bent and broken, scattering expensive hay around the cattle yard. #familyfarm, #homemade, #angusbeef, #cattlefarm,
Looks like a well built feeder......Will and Gary were both smiling when you painted it John Deere green, lol.....Thanks Dave, Merry Christmas.
You too Brent. We’re just back from traveling to family. Hope you’re getting Christmas family time too.
That's a nice bale ring and nice job on the painting. We've went to square feeders with bottoms on so that way the cattle can't push the rings off the bale. A lot of times the bale fork starts the damage and cattle finish it.
Yeah, I think we are pretty hard on them, moving them around. They get frozen down and abused.
Possible snow late tomorrow night. The frost is gone so it won't be much.
The green looks sharp.
Merry Christmas to you, and your's Dave.
You too Bryce. It’s really sloppy here this morning. We drove back from the Twin Cities in nasty fog and rain last night.
About 30 years ago I bought unpainted feeders from Stenbergs next to Tri-County sale barn in Motley. I've only had to repair a couple over the years. The thing I noticed about yours are the holes in the slats. I'd be afraid water will get in and they'll crack when they freeze.
That’s good to know. Yeah, I see the holes too. There is a weep hole at the bottom so maybe it will drain. Time will tell😊
Great comparisons on the different feeders great topic
Thanks Ray. It’s something I’ve struggled with for years. I spend too much time welding the square tube feeders. I’m hoping this lasts a bit longer…
Nice feeder!! But they still don't last forever.
The rubber skirt is a better idea than the tin!!
Looks good!!
Thanks Ed…and Merry Christmas to you and the ladies.
Merry Christmas Dave & Dawn. Saturday morning coffee with y’all and the bovines. The lack of snow isn’t great for moisture transfer to spring, but never fear, Lake Superior has a history of taking your comment about it and saying “Hold my beer”.
Go have coffee and a donut with neighbors, discuss the upcoming planting season and place your bets on whether or not’Harry & the merry band of bovines’ mess up your new bale rings!
Merry Christmas Patrick! We’re back in severe drought but it’s raining right now so maybe that will help. We need snow for spring crops.
Good evening Dave and Dawn.
Our bale feeders were Double L, made in Garnavillo Iowa.
That place has long since closed its doors and went the way of the hoola hoop and the all asparagus diet.
Back in the day, they were tough. Too heavy to wrestle arpund. Especially when they got worked down into the mud
Yours look pretty rugged.
We liked the lighter ones when we fed with a three point mounted bale fork and had to tip the feeders by hand. Now everyone has bale spear loaders.
Bought a heavy duty yellow sioux around 1996' It still looks amazing and has fed 40 to 100 year around, and I'm not bs'ing. Probably ruined 10 or 20 others along side it, only 1 I've ever seen last. Merry Christmas!
I think you’ve hit it. Bigger is better if you don’t smash it with a tractor.
I agree with you on painting. It sucks. I do approve of the color. I've had this idea that I want to use a worn out 45/65/45 loader tire. About 8 foot diameter for a feeder base. Cutting it might be the downfall of the project.
Sounds like a solid recycling plan, unless it freezes down and gets drifted over.
