Apparently it's more difficult for the parents to get the angle right. I saw a video of nestlings being hand fed insects and the person feeding them just put them straight down the nestling's throat and it went down very easily. Apparently it's not so easy for the parent to get close enough to straight down the throat so the chick will grab the food off of them and gulp it down. This is especially apparent for larger meals.
