Model Live Steam Engine Restoration. Jensen 75

- This sad looking stationary live steam engine definitely needed some love.
Built by Jensen in the 1970's or 80's.
Some minor challenges stripping it down but a fun project and very satisfying to have it running at the end of the video.

My dad had this exact kind and would show us it and everything as kids. I still have it to this day. (He gave it to me)
I still have mine from about 50 years ago and it still works fine. Parts are still available from Jensen if needed. Good job!
I had this exact model when I was a kid. I loved it it was absolutley my favorite thing.
A beautiful restoration. I had one of these when I was a kid in the 1950s. Mine was probably made in the 1920s or 1930s. Watching yours, I can still smell it to this day.
Great restoration. Always remember to put the kettle on! Pour boiling water into the boiler, that way it only takes a few seconds for the heat to start the operation!
Very nice job! My father had given my brother and I a steam engine that is similar, if not exact. It is now given to nephew. Nice to see a talented and caring individual do such a beautiful work of restoration.
I never saw aJensen engine so neglected before . Glad you got and restored it !!!!!
Nicely done!
This is awesome! I'm starting to restore a old steam engine just like this and this video is a BIG help.
Most wonderful, I had one when I was 10 years old, back then in 1961, and it still looks verry great and makes my hart tick faster.
I had one around 1964 when I was 10. Sad to say I have no idea at became of it. In retrospect I'm surprised my parents got it for me knowing I was somewhat of a "fire bug" back in those days ~ LOL
great job had one of these as a child in the 40s last century, hint used hot water took less time to get up steam and used singer sewing machine oil thinner ,ran mechano set items built like windmills and such with it as i got older .
sadly like many things gave it away as i grew older, they made a complete work shop to run of the engine ,we could not afford that part ,also had the donkey engine seemed to have more power .
great restoration
Awesome restoration. Something unrelated caught my eye and I had to pause it for a while. I have a Dewalt 20V max cordless drill and it's great but one thing that bothered me is it did not have a built in hex bit holder for a Phillips screw driver like the previous models. I thought about creating a 3D printed one but had not got around to it. Now I'm watching your restoration and wait a minute, what is that thing on the side of your drill? Oh it's what mine did not have.
So I go to Amazon and sure enough they sell them and there are two spots on the drill for them. Good but one more check on Thingverse and two others have already designed them for the drill. Yay! I am now 3D printing them for each side of my drill and that made my day. No more misplacing the screw bit.
OK back to the restoration.
I am impressed wit your resto. And it is fun to watch it run. Keep on truckin..
I have the same model engine and it is pretty much in the same condition. And the reason is it's own story for some other time. I plan to refurbish mine, but want to mimic the bricks with mortar, to look like the original closer. And yes there is a smoke stack that goes on the steam boiler assembly the sticks up higher then anything else. And it is the same brick look too. If you want a smoke stack, I'm sure the company sells replacements... Thumbs Up!
Hi Gary.
The Boiler house wasn't painted, I think it was plated with copper perhaps. I tried to clean and paint strip it but nothing came away so I blasted it instead. That revealed more of a metal discoloration instead of a stained paint which I had thought it was. Even though I would have loved to re-plate in copper I've never done that so went with the Black High temperature paint. I have seen other Jensen engines in Black, I don't know if what was an option.
Nice replacement parts ❤ and new model
I like to see it running again, but i think its not as fully restored by using other colors than the original one. ( i,m not crackin off your fabulous painting skills!) Great job!
Mastercraft tools ! you are Canadien !!! 😉
A magnificent restoration. Better than new
Good job. I had one exactly like that when I was a small boy.
Nice restored old machine to new machine ❤
Great work and looks great
You are an artist.
Just found your channel and Subscribed. Very nice work
I have same one. Run it every now and then. Dad paid maybe 25 bucks for it in the day.
very nicely done. Congratulations.
Personal preference but it’s a shame you didn’t leave the boiler housing as it was. It would have given the piece some character. Not downing you or anything like I said it’s a personal preference. Great work. This is the first video I’ve seen of yours but I’ll be looking at others. You may have a new subscriber.
I agree with you
I had a premonition that you were going to go back on with pop rivets. Magnificent job, nonetheless.
BA bolts for the win. I cringed when the pop rivets came out
@Anthony Wright I'm sorry to have to correct you, but no it didn't. He's drilling out driven rivets during the disassembly.
@Anthony Wright I use all types of rivets in my profession. The original did not use pop rivets. Did you not read your first comment? Think what you want, I don't have time for this conversation.
Thank You from La Pine Oregon
Very nice and wonderful.
I had one exactly like this when I was young.
Great job dear
great work when filling use hot water quicker head of steam
I have the steam engine and an entire wood mill that gos with it in Awesome condition.. barely used.. got it from my dad when he was a kid. Maybe some day ill do a light resto. And get it fired up
Very nice job on yours! Enjoyed watching
Hello,.... you got it from your dad when he was a kid?????
@@ElmerJFudd-oi9kj lol now that I re-read that. 😆
@@ElmerJFudd-oi9kj maybe got it from my dad when I was a kid. 😆
@@milehigh3054 You are forgiven of course, nice machine, I like the Walschaerts switch on it, good job mate.
Excellent!
Yes more steam engine repairs.
Great episode. I could have bought one of those in Taiwan in 2003, wish I had.
You still can. The company is still in business.
I can remember seeing this toy steam engine for sale in the Christmas toy catalog, that's been a long time ago
My father had one of these when I was a kid, seen it running once very cool little machine, great job.
I want to purchase set of engine. Whear i got it for my grand son.
Thanks for posting. What was the cylinder/valve piece that was added? I noticed all the steal leaking from the valve. The same happens when I operate my 25. I've looked on the jensen site for a better valve but see non listed. Have you ever seen or installed a miniature globe valve in place of the stock?
too much complaining about the 'hassles' with your project. That's all part of the project. Other than that a nice fun to watch.
Nice Work
Hi bro 👋👋👋 good to see you 🤝🤝🤝 very good restoration 👍👍👍
nice
Wonderful
Very nice work. Jensen sells replacement parts for most of it's engines , maybe you could find a chimney?
i like thanks
I might do this myself.
Good video clip
good job
Absolutely brilliant...........................................
Very nice restoration you just got a new sub keep up the good work
Would have gone back to original colors for restoration. They make a high temp copper paint and painted the flywheel red, other than that fantastic job!
25:42 might want to adjust the timing even more, i just got a new jensen 75 and when the piston cam at the bottom of the crankshaft, one of the valve linkages is 90 degrees to the left and the other is 90 degrees to the right.
FYI Mine turns in the direction the handle is pointing. Yours is set up opposite. Nice work.
Need either Darth Vader or Jeremy Clarkson actions figure next to it, more power!
Yes ok, di lab Fisika, sekolahku ada model spt itu...cukup membuat ide bagi student.
Just came across this video. Like you, I too bought a used Jensen 75 off e-Bay at a low price. It was in similar condition. Sadly, I did not take images before restoration, but I did take them after completion.
The good news is that Jensen is still in business, and you can order replacement hardware fairly reasonably. I got a new sight glass, fuel tray, authentic rivets, and gaskets as well as some valve oil. It was also missing the stack, which you can see I also obtained. Best of all, they have a flat plate tool for getting the sight glass ring out!
I used Sterno fuel for heating mine, but I would be interested in what that was that you were using. Was that a small butane tank? Timing of the engine is fairly critical to its operation. The optimal setting is when both forward and backward are identical speeds. However, you can favor one direction over the other and that engine will scream! Now to find accessories to hook up to it.
Here's a link to images of mine restored: www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/wfmpxifu15z9w19xqtmk4/h?rlkey=xjsewsu43bkzhwklawdzkt0np&dl=0
That’s really cool. How do you know if the boils is ok and will hold the pressure? I have a 45 year old engine from when I was a kid , was thinking of trying to run it , although all the pipes are soldered .
Its a credit to you.
Sad you didnt go with the brick painting and make it look like a whole scene
It's quite common, especially on models made in the last 15-20 years, that are painted a salmon pink color. the paint discolors considerably after the first firing, so a lot of people use high temp black paint, as it's readily available at most hardware stores. But most Jensen owners (myself included,) will agree that the original copper plated metal is far superior.
Sour cream on a cheese cake!
Just picked one up
Such a shame you thought the copper colouring on the tank stand was “discolouration”. It was intended to make it look like brick
Next time you want clean up brass or copper, go to indian grocery store buy tamarind paste, mix it like sauce and soak it overnight, and Bob's your uncle....👍
👍
Great job! Respect! One note - it would be necessary to leave the color of the flywheel original red
What was done about the cracked sight-glass? In the "after" shot at 27:15+ the screw-in ring looks to be missing.
I noticed that too.
Jensen supplies replacement glass and a little rectangular flat piece of metal that fits the sight glass ring. You can cut a 50-cent piece in half and file the "points" slightly to fit and you have two sight glass wrenches.
ME GUSTA VER ESTOS VIDEOS DE RESTAURACIÓN,PERO EN ESTE CASO LA PERSONA QUE ESTA RESTAURANDO me parece que descuida muchos detalles para hacerlo máximo que parece una pieza única
I can see there is still fault adjusted excenter sheaves in position to crankpin in timeline 25:46. Set the excenter sheaves in 90 degree to crank pin, also left excenter in +90 degree and right excenter in -90 degree positioned to crank pin who are in 0 degree.
Set the timing with the crank pin and the setscrew on the eccentric opposite of each other (180 degrees) and the valve timing will be correct.
Really nice job. What color is the blue paint for the base? It's fairly close to original. I actually like the new color better.
Is the reversing link a Stephensons reversing link?
Yes, she has full Stephenson valve gear; mine runs well in both directions.
Nice job but still needs adjustment it is still knocking
cool
rubber gloves, what are you afraid of ?
Bront László led paint, metal fragments, etc
Of a boiler explosion.....didn’t do a proper steam test....
I just purchased one on eBay for my son who loves steam powered locomotives, it is said to only have seen steam a few times and is in excellent condition, I will inspect it and oil it up based on your video, thanks for posting it. What is the fuel used to run these engines?
There's a tray that sits in the trough-thing under the boiler. This carries white fuel tablets, possibly some kind of alcohol?. The fumes they make when burning are unpleasant.
👍👍👍super
live better through chemistry with that pulley removal
Hmmmm......the technical term for that "stupid pulley" is "flywheel"......and where is the fake chimney for the boiler house ?? Other than that, a very good job over all.
My girlfriend hates baking cheesecake. Now she hates you too.
HELLO i AM A Jensen fan and refurbisher You really know your stuff! Your followers might want to take a look at the you tube tour of the Jensen "factory" real Americana.
The mini pop rivet gun is very cool .Can you tell me where I might find it. Planning on making custom Jensen versions that aren't pink.
😮
It was never a full resto!! Doesn’t have to be. Jensen sells all black fireboxes!!
I like your mini rivet gun. Can I have it?
Lol
How did you set up the fuel system?
That looked pretty trick!!
how do i clean the insinde of the small pipes because there is dirt or something in mine
air compressor and blast air through it or high pressure water.
5 minutes in and I'm shouting "WD40 for the love of God"
Nedá sa pozerať,každú chvíľu vyskakujú okná
Buon lavoro ma..
Hai messo troppo olio lubrificante. Ciao
more steam scotty
wow cool video like to see more thanks you just got new subscribed me
goil ...
Just curious here, but is this a Mamod steam engine in disguise? The Mamod equivalent engine had an imitation chimney at the back end of the boiler, right on top of that otherwise pointless 'half-moon' imitation brick section. I'm not sure, but I think the exhaust steam from the engine was also vented up the chimney, on the Mamod version.
@Anthony Wright What you mean is YOU have no idea what I'm talking about!

Using a plain background would enable your viewers to better see the parts you spread out.
Make it two Wheeler
I started cringing around the 4 minute mark and could not watch anymore.
Try to understand this. When metals corrode heavily the corrosion product expands and can chemically join the two surfaces. Sheer brute force means you have little understanding of how to undo the seized joint.
Recently, I found a pair of long nose pliers completely rusted, if I applied enough opening force I would have broken the handles. Using logic, the fulcrum was rusted in and chemically bound. WD 40 does not work if it cannot penetrate the joint. The only solution was to heat the pliers. This did not work after 5 attempts. So logic tells you to heat the outside of the pliers and cool the inside fulcrum part with water. This actually worked and unseized the handles a little and more WD 40 freed them completely.
Rust between close surfaces like in pliers expands about 10% causing tremendous internal pressure locking up the joint. Only heat and contraction and expansion will release it.
I restore miniature engines, I'm a metallurgist and metalwork teacher.
Just use Deox-C it's a powder you mix in water, submerge the rusted item and leave it a few days. I tried it on a pair of totally seized instrument calipers and it released the 1/16th thread as well.
That looks suspiciously like a Wilesco engine. Did Jensen have some agreement to produce or market them under their name?
Jensen was producing engines before wilesco was. I think even as far back as 1927. Wilesco started off making toys in the early 1900s and in the late 40's early 50's started producing model steam engines.
Boa sorte
