Everytime I listen to Shellac I get the feeling that they actually challange me to like them. What I mean is that their material is so different from what most people (even people that are into alternative music) understand as music that it´s like they are saying: "I dare you to like our music!" and at first their sound was kind of strange to me but I was definetly intrigued. I´m so happy to have found this band.
yeah, i mean, they're not the only band to do that.. even the Grateful Dead and many many jazz players and pretty much, it's kinda the punk/whatever you want to call the rest of loud and complex by design ensembles.. but yeah.. what they're trying to do, i think, i get you to be a musician, a part of what they are doing, by.. counting 1234 in whatever cadence they've got going.. and they will fuck with your commercial "sensibilities"... but, it's very str8 frwd music, dripping with honesty and an absolute respect for the rhythmic accuracy that flows strongly thru every tune i've heard from them.. same with The jesus lizard... but Shellac goes out their way to show you their contructive design, when most musicians try to make you think they're making majik somehow.. i don't know... but good comment, dude.. keep at it
Steve quote from EA forum - I have played on a bunch of different amps over the years, both with and without other parts of my normal setup and I'm usually fine with it. I prefer my own stuff, but really it doesn't matter that much.
In Big Black and Rapeman I used strat- or telecaster-type guitars with neck+bridge pickups, usually both on and out-of-phase. With Shellac it's always been the Travis Bean and when I use both pickups they're in phase.
Thanks for sharing this song. This and that Steady as She Goes song is reason enough. Now I MUST BUY THIS ALBUM, to go along with the other three. Might as well complete the collection. Love the chang of pace. The only other band I can think of that can change the pace so extreme polar opposites is SOAD. Glad to see that Albini hasn't lost the rage over the years like others. You can't tame steve. He still ROCKS OUT!!!
About the only amps I can't really suffer are the high-gain beasts like the Mesa rectifiers and contemporary fuzzbox Marshalls (JCM900 or later). Also I think having a thin snappy pick with a couple of points on it matters. I use copper Hotlicks picks, but I used notched Martin picks (the ones with the little handle on them) before that and it sounded about the same.
so what? what's your point? did you really have to say it? did someone have a gun or compromising info to your head unless you made that that judgement call? that track is great.. you've not done anything that sounds that good or you wouldn't be such a discerning commentator on this beautiful upload..... peace, my bro
I think a couple of things matter most. Hot single-coil pickups (SD Quarter-pounder Tele/strat, Travis Bean/EGC, P90s), mild preamp distortion and very little midrange. The bass is actually pretty important, but the key thing is not having very much distortion or midrange in there.

Chicago style deep dish pizza was invented when Steve Albini's kick drum sound punched craters in the dough

Two guys screaming to a really badass drum beat, this really is an awesome Shellac song!!
When I listen to this I imagine Brak from Space Ghost is singing. It makes me love it even more.
u should suggest it to them.. perfect comment hahhaha
one of those rare songs that passes the "can you imagine The Muppets performing this" test.
oh hell yeah.

Easy. Animal.
I can't understand a damn thing Steve and Bob are screaming. And I wouldn't have it any other way. I love this band.

Agreed. Saw them 2 weeks ago, they still rock!! Didn't play this song though, was very disappointed...
there's a video of a live show from 1994 and they play this song which was included in the 2007 album Italian greyhound

It's the sound I've always strived for, but failed to get.
im glad that you liked that he liked it!
Brilliancy!
i must say i prefer the Peel session version from about 94.
And that session's Crow is also superior to the lp version.
Just.

@@zylonandtamponhead How pretentious are you? Also: the peel End of Radio and Steady as she goes are better than their studio versions.
just magnific.. :)
@JayOrphan I agree with the "rip-off" thing. Albini found/created his own sound, I need to find mine.
