      They are absolutely amazing. My personal review is different tho. The controller feels so damn comfortable in my hands. They need to tilt the connector slide so that the screen points directly at your face when your hands are at rest in your lap. There’s about 30 degrees of space to do that available on the controller with its current build. For future versions I suggest that instead of each side needing a usb-c plug to charge they should make the centerpiece more than just a plastic connection piece. It should be an extended battery pack to bring with you in case your battery depletes. This would allow home on the couch play to be longer sessions and it could also serve as a nexus to charge both sides simultaneously off of just 1 charging mechanism. You charge the battery pack and it in turn charges each side. It could also potentially have a wireless charging feature where you set it on a dock.

    You can use the remapping in the system settings to get around the back button issue, if you wanted to set your left back button to A which is on the right joycon what you can do is set the screenshot button to A in the settings and then set the back button to press the screenshot button which is now triggering an A press

    Just a little comment as someone who's been begging for a good controller with an octagonal gate: I have some motor skill issues and cannot stay straight with analogue thumb sticks. This isn't an issue in some games where they have a bit of tolerance, almost like a deadzone, for some directions but there are plenty of games where walking straight forward or backward is completely impossible for me. I cannot get my thumbs to make and stay straight without looking at the controller. This issue is completely resolved with an octagonal gate and is one of the reasons why I love the GameCube controller so much. The other being that it fits my small hands pretty well. Oh, and you can definitely have fine control with an octagonal gate. You just gotta learn not to always bottom it out to the corners, stay in between when you want to turn gently.
    My main concern when this controller was announced was actually the size of it. I was worried that it would be larger than the GameCube controller for "comfort" as many controllers these days skew big but seeing it in your hands it looks like it might be about the same? Another concern is that it seems like the triggers are digital even though they have a bit of travel? That would cause issues in all sorts of non-Switch games and would be a main concern as well.

    As someone who also uses Playstation and Xbox layout controllers, Gamecube's layout is a godsend! The a$$hole design of swapping the ABXY buttons for no reason is irreverent when each button has a different shape and feel. It's impossible to forget the layout.
    So for me, Gamecube games/fighting games are not why I use controllers with this layout. I genuinely just think it is the best button layout. Also, the gates are fantastic for both 2D and 3D platformers and even some shooters with stupid controls like Bioshock.

    There is a way to remap buttons on the switch to allow you to use a button from the other side. I don’t use the dpad for most of my games so I remapped b to one of the directions and then the rear button to that direction and now it allows me to have b on the left a on the right.

    Why do people question the Gamecube button layout so much? I prefer a Gamecube controller for ALL games (on PC as well), because it's objectively the best controller design ever, and here's why: due to the unique face button shapes, they can never be confused with one another like every other ABXY layout of **4 identically sized circles** can! With the Gamecube controller, the A button is like 'home row' for your thumb, and all the other action buttons surround it, which makes way more ergonomic and logical sense than the standard diamond arrangement. With other controllers (if you're someone who games on multiple platforms), you're often having to look down from the screen to double check what you're pressing, which is ridiculous and shouldn't be the case. Going from Nintendo to Xbox? Watch out because A, B, X, and Y are all in different spots! Going from Xbox or Nintendo to Playstation? Well now you've gotta remember some random f*king symbol positions instead of letters.. The Gamecube controller had this problem solved over 20 years ago, yet somehow an inferior design has prevailed. This is the true reason why the Gamecube controller will never die. It's just better.

    I'm interested in where the stick modules actually came from, who the supplier and manufacturer are, because those stickboxes seem almost semi-custom as they don't match any other typical design on the market currently.
    I'd be curious to see how long the modules actually last, same with GK's design. The better of the suppliers only rate their basic hall sensors, i.e. no mitigation strategies implemented into the sensor package, at 1000 hours of quiescent age-related voltage drift; which is abysmally short once you think about it, probably the reason we're not seeing amazing warranties (if at all) on these controllers. Furthering this issue is that hall sensors also have an infancy period of voltage drift before their drift plateaus to a consistent low, so that 1000 hour number is pretty hit or miss, not to mention that's average among a set; and this age-related voltage drift issue runs away fairly quickly, which would mean you need constantly adapting mitigation, which wouldn't exist in most consumer products. Are they a step above the current ALPS situation, sure, but are they long-term, not really; plus potentiometers aren't the issue, properly specced ones will last a long time, ALPS is cutting corners and overrating components, that's why drift wasn't an issue a couple of decades ago and why it only has been an issue the past couple console generations, ALPS has become the quality that third parties used to get shat on for. Honestly I think hall sticks are a fad, there's a reason Sega's design didn't stick around for the past quarter century, if ALPS wasn't causing problems these modules wouldn't really be a thing, basic marketing tactics, piggyback off an issue and provide a solution that's marginally better, rather than creating a better solution; which does exist, Sony figured out cheap and simple inductive sticks 15-20 years ago, and discontinued them probably because they were too good (look at the current 'controllers are consumables' market), plus other inductive designs do exist, analog optoelectronic designs could exist, etc.
    As for the controller itself, I don't understand a few things. Why is there a charging port per controller, the thing charges via the Switch, the thing could instead charge via the middle bar. The rear buttons are also in a fairly awkward spot, the molding under the C-stick and dpad are entirely reachable, not to mention the GC handles are unique in that you can wrap your hands around them fully, why not tuck the button into the inside of the grips instead of towards the rear. The light-up buttons are probably the reason they feel lackluster, you have to pipe light into them somehow, and how they get around that is more than likely what leads to their downside; I could understand them for someone that isn't familiar with a certain layout, going from Sony to a different platform, and the issue between Microsoft's and Nintendo's ABXY layouts, but the GC layout is made in such a way that it doesn't need this feature, A is always main, B is always secondary, and X/Y are always tertiary, by color, size, and layout. Also why do the swappable stick gates not have anti-friction rings, at least on the circular ones, this would be such a basic upgrade.
    Another reviewer somehow got gamepad tester to work with their controller. Somehow NIXY has tuned the controller to only have 5% circularity error. Although I noticed some oddities and I do wonder if the modules have redundancy or if they're somehow mitigating jumpy sensors, y'know the issue GuliKit has with their no-deadzone mode.

    • @0FFICERPROBLEM
      @0FFICERPROBLEM Рік тому

      Wow you are obviously extremely knowledgeable about this stuff! Is there any controllers you would recommend buying atm for PC/Console/Docked Switch use that are potentially long term quality?

    • @xaytana
      @xaytana Рік тому +2

      @@0FFICERPROBLEM The current market is pretty much potentiometer sticks or hall effect sticks, we all know how the pot situation is lately, and hall sensors are a step up from the current situation but aren't a long term solution. Plus no company is invested in other solutions, like inductive position sensors, optoelectronics, etc., nor will any company realistically dive into that because controllers are now consumables.
      Honestly, learn how to repair controllers, it's the only long-term low-cost solution until someone develops something better; and given the controllers are consumables take the industry has, this will have to be an aftermarket mod at some point, and that kind of mod just isn't all that simple to pull off considering the difficulty of drop-in modules that adapt one style of tech to another tech's physical layout. If you get into repairs, you _might_ have luck scavenging potentiometers from decades ago, y'know when drift wasn't such a widespread issue, this might be a first decent step. Another option is finding a 4pin SixAxis/DualShock 3, as these are magnetic sticks that aren't hall sensors, just use API translation such as a Mayflash Magic or a Brook adapter; I'm currently trying to reverse engineer these, but this is proving to not be so simple.
      The market is just in a bad place right now because of capitalism and consumerism with absolutely no oversight nor consumer protections. That's why various manufacturers are jumping on hall sensors, they're a marketable alternative with a lot of marketing buzz, mostly from influencer word of mouth, which honestly makes them more of a fad than a solution given their downsides.

    ordered mine! does clicking the controller into the switch just work like a native bumper set or is it still bluetooth since you mentioned you can charge it via the usb c port. just making sure i dont have to always charge it over the ports and i just misunderstood that.
