  • Sarajevo, YUGOSLAVIA - 1984 Winter Games, Figure Skating, Pairs' Long Program - Kitty and Peter Carruthers decided to skate conservatively in order to guarantee themselves a medal. As such, they opted not to attempt the throw quadruple Salchow, since they were only successfully landing it 60% of the time. Their decision paid off as they skated clean, which helped them win the Silver Medal.

    This program brought me to tears. So genuine, so great ... their skating is timeless ... and Kitty has some of the most beautify lines in the business ... her extension, toe points, are legendary. Even though they didn't win, this type of skating makes you proud to be an American.

    Kitty never stopped smiling, from beginning to end of program, her smile didn't falter. I like seeing that because the pressure is so great on athletes in all Olympic sporting events, that it's painful to see their nerves show on their faces.
    A perfect example is Debi Thomas. Before her long program in '88, you could see on her face the strain and nervousness and I hurt for her. I bet she wished a hundred times to be able to go back and have a do over.

    Maybe not as difficult as V & V or as polished, but it was clean and executed well with some difficult and uncommon moves in there like the lateral twist... but even more than that, it was done with a lot of passion. a beautiful performance with a nice flow and some excellent lifts and the best throws of the night. How anyone could say that this didnt deserve at least the silver medal is totally ridiculous.. the East Germans had horrendous choreography and had mistakes, the Soviet pair that won had less finesse but more difficulty, but still Peter and Kitty had spirit and verve, which NO other pair showed that night.

    • @grantgoffin4774
      @grantgoffin4774 Рік тому

      I already predicted Valova & Vasiliev would be overtaken by a younger Soviet team if they continued and predicted it would be a mistake of them to continue after 84. I had no idea that it would be Gordeeva & Grinkov of course, knew nothing about them at this point really, but I knew it would be someone. If Gordeeva & Grinkov had not emerged, it probably would have been Selezneva & Makarov, who yes Valova & Vasiliev almost always beat the next 4 years too, but that is since with G&G taking over and Valova & Vasiliev being past Olympic winners they were relegated to #3 team, but probably are pushed to take over as #1 without G&G. Or some other Soviet pair we never got to see due to those 3. I honestly don't think V&V stay #1 until 88 even if G&G had not emerged. Their 83 world win was controversial with most thinking the East Germans should have won, and some even thinking maybe Underhill & Martini too. Their win here was probably deserved, but some thought the Carruthers arguably outskated them in the long program even here. And they lost post olympic worlds to Underhill & Martini. They were not nearly unbeatable like the past dominant Soviet teams, and I think they should have taken their titles and run at that point, not tried to stay in another quad. Just my opinion, but I was proven right in my prediction then that they would overtaken. And I still insist even if G&G had not emerged, they still would have been.

    • @grantgoffin4774
      @grantgoffin4774 Рік тому

      And yes the Carruthers were fab here and 100% deserved atleast the silver. I even think they have a good case for winning the long which would have given them the gold, but since they were very lucky to even be tied for 2nd in the short, I am fine with the result, but a mix of 2nd to 4th place ordinals in the long, bigtime underscored when they were the only inspired skate of the entire night. I get their side by side jumps were much easier than both Soviets and even the East Germans so some docking for that in the marks for sure, but everything beyond that was great, and their best skate ever both technically and artistically. And all those other teams badly messed up atleast 1 side by side jump negating some of their jump advantage already.
      On another note Larissa's costume was absolutely hideous and detracted from the overall skate for me since I couldn't stop looking at that hideous dress. Her lift positions were godawful at this point, the short is much better for them as it hides their weaknesses, especialy just 1 overhead lift which is impossible to hit an ugly position from. The Germans picked such horrible music, and Valova & Vasiliev's music cuts were ridiculous and weird with like 6 different ones that made no sense together, but kind of funny all the same and they made it work well somehow.

      You couldnt pick out any position in this program that was not first rate. The throws were the best of the evening. They had the best spins, lifts and their program was the more artistic of the evening. You are so basic. You dont realize that is isnt only about technical elements. There is line, position, spins, lifts and choreography that also influence the scores. I didnt see too many other pairs skate as "one" that evening. Sit down and let the experts do the analysis here.

      @@metsdudenj Her jumps, especially 2F - a first pate position in the air? Just look at her rafting free leg in the air and shakely landing 2:12, compare at least with his 2F. Or landing in twist, he should only touch her waist on the catch, and not hug her as here 0:34. Best lifts really? Only two full overhead lifts with no change of her position, no difficult variations? Best spins? Did you watch Valova-Vasiliev program, in which both catch his foot during the rotation, performing difficult variations? There are no difficult spin variations in this program.

  • @Ricky0101
    @Ricky0101 8 років тому +1

    She made a two footed landing on a jump but whats surprising is that there were SIX western leaning judges and THREE Eastern bloc countries. So the judging was skewered in their favor.

    • @metsdudenj
      @metsdudenj 7 років тому +1

      Hardly, the Canadian judge tried to hold them down in the SP to boost the Canadians. And he favored the East Germans over the Carruthers to try to boost his pair to a medal

    • @metsdudenj
      @metsdudenj 4 роки тому +1

      The Czech judge voted for the Americans, and the Japanese voted against them, so it really wasnt skewed in their favor. I was one of the statisticians for this competition, and the way the ordinals played out, the Americans had 5 2nd place votes the Russians had 2 and East Germans 3. The real scramble was for the bronze, but the ordinals played against the East Germans, because they had more second place votes than the Russians, but 4 fourth place votes. It was crazy, because there were a few ties in there, and one of two judges could have flipped the whole thing. But I feel ultimately, it was the Canadian judge throwing the 5.9 for the Carruthers' artistic mark sealed it up for them. There were really 5 pairs contending for the three medals and honestly, I expected the Carruthers to be lower in the SP because it was an average skate, but they capitalized on the errors of the other teams.
