I share a drywall lift with my cousin. It’s an el cheapo from Princess Auto, $170 new. It doesn’t get used often, but when needed it’s there.
In its ten year life span, it’s paid for itself four-fold.

Ben would be good to do a video on avoiding and protecting against the drywall products and how you got rid of itchiness and skin problems. Like do you use a barrier cream, do you take antihistamines. You seem to work in. T-shirt and without gloves maybe your lucky you don’t get skin issues, it would be nice to find about how you dealt with these kind of drywall issues.

Its refreshing to see someone taking pride in their work. Nowadays drywalling in mostly farmed out to subs who tend to utilize inexperienced cheap day laborers picked up off the street each moring. New housing developments are plagued by horrible quality thanks to inexperiencedand/or overworked labor. Case in point two of my siblings purchased brand new homes off plan after touring model homes. The model homes were absolutely flawlessly and beautifully finshed. Both homes, built by different builders in different cities, have the worst drywalling I've ever seen. There is not a single right angle, plumb, or level surface in either home. To be fair the low grade timber framing, likely done by day laborers as well, is responsible for the most horrendously undulating walls and ceilings. However when it came to joints falling apart, corners crumbling, and the 100s of nail pops within the first year, that is all down to inexperienced labor and cheap materials.
One sister, unable to live with the condition of her brand $2m home moved out and had the walls stripped down to the framing. What they uncovered were serious structural defects and code violations. They've documented evidence showing framing, joists, and second and third floor window and door headers were removed (nail holes indicate proper framing was in place). It appears as material shortages and lumber prices skyrocketed during the height of the pandemic the builder and/or subs removed these structural timbers after inspection to be used on other homes. Additionally the drywall was thinner than specified, specs called for all copper piping (PEX was in the walls and floor and mated to the copper with incompatible plastic fittings causing leaks), wavy roof (trusses were not immune from being cannibalized for bits of timber), scrap bits of wood were nailed together to make longer lengths - often still not long enough to reach the floor, ceiling or wall plate, the 5/8" ply subfloor on the 2nd and 3rd floor was replaced with 3/8" osb after a scheduled site visit, 5/8" roof sheathing ply was subbed with 7/16" OSB, etc., etc,..... It is a mess. So many violations they fought hard to avoid a tear down order. They're bringing the house upto code to sell and suing the developer. Thankfully all of the materials and specs for this build were in the contract. One can never have enough documentation.
My other sister has given up on forcing the builder to correct deficiencies and missing upgrades. Ten of her neighbors arrived for their final walk through to find their two car garage became a one car plus. The developer decided to save money on grading and a 12 foot retaining wall. The end result is a steep driveway and a staircase in the second garage bay leading to the entry door nine feet up. One of the buyers is disabled and paid extra for his new home to be wheel chair compatible. He had no choice but to sell. Unfortunately their contracts all stated final specifications delivered upon completion. Meaning they have no legal recourse for the loss of their garage bay, build/finish quality, and other deficiencies unless specified in their contract. They're suing the real estate agent for false advertising over the "two car garge" selling point.
Why all my word vomit....? The answer is simple. Learn from others mistakes by ensuring EVERYTHING for your project/build is in the contract before signing or paying a dime; including penalty clauses. All materials from fixtures and fitting to pipes/lines, fasteners, paint color and brand, to detailed flooring products and brands. Do not rely expect the quality of a model home to be representative of your build. Demand your home is built to the exacting standards of the model home, exactly the same build and finish quality and identical materials, in your contract. Trust is cheap, but does not provide any protection.

I delivered sheetrock for 14yrs. Drove flatbed 1 ton and a sheetrock boom truck. The boom truck we didn't use dolly or remote. So I climbed up and down each unit, boomed it, had a helper, and we toted the sheets into house and stacked them in piles. We would carry 3 12ft sheets at a time, 4 8fts at a time, and 2 5/8 at a time. 5/8's were usually for garages and apartments. We delivered roughly 20 units and toted every sheet. Luckily I had the same helper for many years so we built our strength up and moved like a team! Haven't toted in years though. Still suffering physically from it. I did the math averaged about 350 sheets a day for 14 yrs came out to be over a million sheets of sheetrcok I've toted. Now I've gotten good at hanging taping floating skimming a lot of it thanks to you.

As you get older I definitely think it’s much more worthwhile to use additional tools to make the job easier and faster that way it reduces your body load. I have been using the festool planex 2 a great tool to make sanding so much nicer. But I would love for you to do a settings comparison between harder mud with glue in them compared to softer muds using planex 2. I haven’t used the soft interface pads they are on order but adjusting the vacuum suction and using the right grit I can get a superb finish on both hard and soft muds it does take time to get use to the tool. I have also bought the harness which I think would be worthwhile for you to try out from festool to see how much easier it is in terms of carrying the weight of the sander when you are working above your head and sanding with the planex 2.

    • @HotspotsSoutheast

Not everyone can afford the professional tools like Festool. And it’s a large bulky device that will quickly wear you out. I improvised. My orbital sander has a bag attachment. Useless. Remove that. Made a connector so my shop vac attaches to it. Now it’s an expensive Festool. And cost me nothing.
