  • Look inside Apologia's High School Biology curriculum, find out what format may work best for you, and learn how it has worked for us!
To see how it lines up with grade 11 and 12 Alberta curriculum, you can click the second link below.
Click this link for samples and lots of information on the curriculum!

There is a TON of information on this link below and most of it is too much. However if you go to pages 17, 25, 31, 37 it will give you a good outline of Biology 20. For an overview of Biology 30 go to pages 51, 57, 65, 74. This is a good way to see how the topics in the Apologia Biology compare with Alberta curriculum if you are interested! Apologia covers everything from what I saw, except the human body systems.

Thank you so much for this review. It really helped with my decision. My son has not been independent so I am hoping with this much assistance I can lead him that way by the middle of this school year. I am going to do the general science for 7th grade 🙂

I am trying the general science this year for my 7th grade son as well! You will have to comment and let me know how you like it! Knowing that Apologia is very advanced, I'm planning to likely spread it out over two years.

Hi Karla, thank you, your video represents the very best of why I watch youtube:-) A really helpful video, that doesn't put pressure on me to buy a particular program. Thank you for going through it all so slowly, we have used The Young Explorers Series as reference books, this is the first time I'm looking at the Science program with ALL THOSE options, and wondering what programs come next - and are they as thorough as the Science one looks to be! Thank you!

Thank you for your sweet comment! There's so much good curriculum out there, but it's only good if it's a fit for your family! I am using Apologia's General Science course with my middle schooler this year and we are liking it so far! We are moving through it slowly and will definitely spread it out over two years, but so far it's very good. Happy hunting! :)

@@karlacanon2507 Dear Karla, re-watching this video, as we did not end up doing Apologia General Science in 2023, but are going to tackle it in 2024. Could you please do a video on your experiences with General Science - especially how you might have made it more manageable to study? Am considering 2 days per week as being achieveable. Also - are your students going on to do the Physical Science, or will the student go on to the High School level course choices ? Curious whether both General Science and Physical Science need to be studied to do a high school course. thank you, love your videos!

i like the look of the program but that is way too much time to spend on a subject each day. We would have to break it up and it would take forever to finish. You only have access to the course for a year correct?

@@danalee8658 I agree that the amount of time required to do this was too much. We did not end up completing the course. It would be great for a student going into a science field after high school, but my daughter wants to be a music teacher so it was more than she needed for sure.

Thank you so much for this wonderful review! So helpful! I am considering using this for my 10th grader. He loves Science, however, I agree with you of how advanced Apologia is! I would like to know what is your daughter's opinion about the videos being long. Do they keep you engaged? My son is using Abeka Academy this year and he hates them. They're about 30 minutes long but he's bored with them. Do they do labs? Something my son would love to do is experiments.
Also, how do you as the parent keep track of her progress?
Once again thank you for this video

My daughter really liked the videos! She found the content heavy in the course, and appreciated how the videos gave another way for her to understand the information being presented. Yes! Labs are a big part of this course! There is a lab for every module, and students learn how to do a detailed lab reports. The videos also walk you through the lab experiments, which was great for us. I found it easy to keep track of her progress as I would just check in and see where she was on the checklist that comes with each module, or in the student notebook. It's all laid out what they need to do each day, so progress is easy to track!

Very helpful! We are also in Alberta. Do you think this course is something that can be done in Grade 10 and then challenge the Bio 30 diploma? I’m trying to figure out how to get Bio, Chemistry, and Physics into the three years of high school using Apologia. Because like you mentioned, here in Alberta it’s normally Bio 10, 20, 30 for grades 10, 11, and 12, and then Chemistry 10, 20, 30 etc. If you take this course in grade 10, does that mean you are ‘done’ biology, and then you take Chemistry in grade 11, and then are ‘done’ Chemistry type of thing? Thank you for your input! Your IEW videos were great and we are now using IEW because of your videos!

I’m an Albertan in the US for several years now, and the US system is much like you suggested. Biology is one year, chemistry another year, etc. Different states may do them in a different order, but from what I’ve seen courses are not split into 10, 20, 30 (grades 10, 11, 12) like in Canada. Often students will continue with an AP course in Biology later on, but that is optional. There’s pros and cons to this system, but it generally seems to work well.

Nature’s Workshop Plus and Home Science Tools have lab kits you can order. I’ve ordered from both and prefer Nature’s Workshop Plus because the materials are organized by module versus having to go through the box and figure out what goes with what.

I'm starting General Science for my 7th grader this next year. We hope to spread it out maybe over 2 years. She wants to do something science related as a career. We don't want to do it online. At least not starting out, probably later.

My son is doing it this year and it has been fantastic! It's a lot of work, so I think that's a great idea to spread it over two years. He will mostly get it done this year, but for the first half of the year I counted all the writing in the student notebook as the bulk of his LA.

Have you encountered any issues with typos, or questions not being the same in the student book as they are in the textbook, etc.? We are using Apologia's 3rd Edition Physical Science this year, and it is very frustrating for me. The study guide answer key sometimes matches the student book problem, and sometimes matches the problem in the textbook or kindle ebook. There have been issues with several of the study guides and tests so far. This makes me question using Apologia Biology. What would your second choice of biology curriculum be?
