Kenneth Page, born on January 20, 1954, and passing on September 30, 2024, was a celebrated American actor and cabaret singer. His legacy includes his original Broadway role as Ken in Ain't Misbehavin', playing Old Deuteronomy in Cats, and voicing the iconic Oogie Boogie in The Nightmare Before Christmas franchise. Page’s notable Broadway roles also include The Lion in The Wiz and Nicely-Nicely Johnson in the revival of Guys and Dolls.
Kenneth Page was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. His mother, Gloria, and step-father, Garvin Gilstrap, brought him up in a Catholic environment. Page's early exposure to the arts came from his education at St. Bridget of Erin and St. Nicholas elementary schools, where a teacher and an older cousin inspired him to pursue theater. He graduated from Bishop DuBourg High School in 1972 and received a full scholarship to Fontbonne College in Clayton, Missouri, majoring in theater.
Page’s career began at The Muny, an outdoor theater in St. Louis, where he performed in the chorus. His Broadway debut came with The Wiz, where he played The Lion, followed by his acclaimed role as Nicely-Nicely Johnson in an all-Black revival of Guys and Dolls. This earned him the Theatre World Award. His next major success was in the original cast of the Fats Waller musical revue Ain't Misbehavin', for which he won a Drama Desk Award. He later reprised the role in the 1982 televised broadcast and again in a 1988 Broadway revival.
