I've read that the hatch you see is the docking ring. There are lights there that the station uses to track starliner's location. When it moves further away the hatch will close

Because it's scheduled to be closed later. I believe some of the proximity sensors (cameras, LIDAR, etc) are under there, so it needs to be open while near the ISS, but I'm not positive on that.

I suspect that system was an after thought. No one to shut the hatch. NASA will never show you that. I suspect hydraulics and some external forces to assist its movement. Or they just plain forgot about that.
Very likely to be space debris from thousands of exploded Chinese satellites (the US contributes some space junks but no where near the number of Chinese) So much trash on orbit nowadays it threaten to interfere with full deployment of starlink

Couldn't the two astronauts left behind, just jump out wearing a space suit and a parachute? They wouldn't be going fast so no friction to burn them up. When they got down to 10 thousand feets, they could deploy their parachutes.
They would be going very fast and would be burned up. The ISS is in orbit, so it's traveling at several kilometers per second. Jumping out of it won't change your velocity very much. You would also not actually be able to jump enough to deorbit, so you'd first be stuck in space for a year, die, and then burn up.
I think Starliner did okay given the circumstances for a first flight. You know how many Space X vessels exploded before they got it right. I don’t remember Starliner doing that. And one of Space X explosions tore a big hole in the atmosphere.
Back in mid-70s this (capsule launch/landing/docking/undocking) was a routine in the Soviet Union, almost like a New York - Tokyo commercial flight. Soviet Union is widely viewed as a compete failure, with its pieces (including Russia) being considered as 3-d (or even 4-th, 5th) world countries. It is amazing to see, after precisely 50 yrs, the the most technologically advanced country will have such a problem and the landing (of the unmanned capsule!) is still an event! What is going on?
They're in the ISS still, but they're safe. If there's an emergency they'd pile into the Dragon (they don't have seats or suits, which is unfortunate, but there's never been an ISS emergency), and when the next Dragon arrives later this month they'll have seats and suits if there's an emergency.

Not for the faint of heart certainly not for beta individuals .You have to be a triple alpha person to be doing this not a beta person,Butch is an impeccable test pilot and certainly a triple alpha astronaut . Sonny is an experienced and highly intelligent astronaut also a triple alpa . Boeing poured thought the data and determined that the Starliner was fit for flight.Unfortunately because of the two loses of STS-51-L and STS -107 (complete vehicle losses with all crew perishing ), which both incidences were proven to be preventable. NASA decided they could not risk another disaster and made the decision to send the capsule down unmanned . This decision should have been made by the commander of the mission not a bureaucratic agency that has cased great loss of highly intelligent life -UNACCEPTABLE. The reason the hatch was left open , is it requires a crew to be on board to close the hatch . The capsule will sustain major damage with the capsule open , but even in this deplorable state , it still outperformed . Boeing was not crossing its fingers , the science and engineering prevailed as they correctly predicted . This is another NASA debacle . The villain here is not Boeing it is NASA. I think that lots of folks want revenge for the 737 max vehicle losses . You need to know this , All the pilot in both vehicle losses (in the 737max incidences )had to do was disconnect the auto pilot and fly the plane manually . Two of them were poor pilots and did not disconnect the auto pilot resulting in total vehicle loss of and complete loss of life . The third incident , the pilot did what Butch would do and disconnected the auto pilot and flew the plane maually without incident. Also pay attention to this, commercial passenger aircraft are fully autonomous . This means they can takeoff and land without pilot intervention ,and by law they only have to complete 1 in 3 landings manually . This means that a pilot with10,000 hours may only have 3,000 hours of pilot in command (PIC). This means that pilots are only required by law , to fly manually 33% PIC (to remind you Pilot In Command ). 66% of PIC is automation-THIS IS WRONG . Some pilots have forgotten how to fly manually because automation is well ..too easy .So before you pass judgment as you all have done, consider my comments and do some proper research and at least be somewhat informed before you comment on topics you clearly know nothing about .
