Concerts from back then were so different, a sea of cellphones with the flash on has it's own charm but looking in the eye of your audience and them looking back at you, and not a screen, is really special.
Saw her in the smallest venue ever in Manson Washington two yrs ago, totally blew me away. It didnt matter to her at all that it was a small venue and like 250 people there, she rocked it out!!
I'm 17 years old, and amazed. Just one woman, one guitar. No drums, not back up vocals, not extra guitars, no studio, no autotune, just what. This is amazing. I love this. Why isn't this getting some light shined too? Like even if it's old, how often do you really see this?
Amazing, isn't it? The answer to your question is: Not often enough. A lot of 'popular' music has gotten quite lazy - when it comes to developing rich harmonies, melodies and bringing out the natural character (voice) of the instruments.
When I first got the CD, I watched it weekly, and often when I'm paying bills, I always turn it on and listen. I saw this tour in Chicago It was amazing as they captured here. I always said Melissa doesn't need anyone, just her and a guitar!!!
First time I ever heard of Jackie Venson she was performing "All Along The Watchtower" with Melissa Etheridge !!! I was in Awww!! Bet I listened to it 100 times that week !! You could tell Melissa was in Awww too !! I finally listened to her library, and WoW!! It's Fantastic!! Blues & Rock!! I should have heard of her before now 😲
I first heard this song when she performed it at the 1988 Grammys. I was watching it on tv and she had so much energy and fire that I went out the next day and bought the album. Totally blew me away. She is totally awesome live. They don't come any more talented than Melissa Etheridge.
I'm fortunate enough to have watched this talented artist go from clubs to selling out arenas. He biggest accomplishment as an artist was her "Yes I am" album. She told the world that it is OK to be female and rock a guitar, it is OK to be female and drink whiskey and hang with the guys, she told the world it is OK to be open about who you love. She answered the question that plagued her for her entire life: "Are you gay"? and she answered: "Yes, I am". I have been a fan of hers for more than 25 years and still love to play her music!
Patricia Rozzo, Yes! I have been a fan since her first album in 1988, hard to believe it has been 30 years. Still putting it all out there and sounding fantastic 🎶
Joan Schansberg, Melissa was not "outed". She didn't hide her sexual orientation, like a don't ask don't tell, she didn't discuss it openly. Her family and friends knew. Why does the world need to know? It doesn't affect the music.
Joan Schansberg, She wasn’t “outed”. I don’t remember, exactly, HOW Melissa revealed her own Truth. I kind of recall someone in radio, calling her a “butch rocker”. She was aware and didn’t protest the announcement,...I imagine that the revelation was prearranged by ME and the radio station. We already knew the T, and were all just waiting for it to be official, ya know? I already had the album, “Yes I Am”. I always thought that the album was her way of coming out to her fans. We already/always knew, anyway. I’ve been crushed out on her since she graduated from playing the small venues, and bars in and around LA. I didn’t know about her, UNTIL she began to play larger venues, outside of LA.
I was a fan the first time I heard her and I can't tell you how many concerts of hers I went to... including this one. MELISSA ROCKS! Nobody, and I dare say, NOBODY will ever put on a better show than her. Her whole heart and soul goes into it. She used to play for over 2 hours straight. Thanks for all the memories Melissa. You honestly kept me going.. literally. 😊
There are some performers and certain songs that just really get at something in the heart of human experience. This is one of those songs, and Melissa is one of those performers. Rock on, lady.
HOT DAMN!!!! Seriously!? This is an AMAZING performance -- other performers should TAKE NOTE!!!! Girl blew the roof off the place & it was just her & her guitar!! NO props, no light shows, nothing but her & the guitar!! Have loved her music for YEARS & she shows no signs of slowing down! Just keeps getting better & better!! Thanks for making this performance available for us to watch! Would've loved to have been there!! :-)
I saw Melissa Etheridge and Sheryl Crow last night in Sydney Australia. They were Both Great. But Melissa , WOW. She just keeps getting Better. TRULY A BEAUTIFUL SOUL. XXXXX. .
Saw her in Dallas a few years ago, great, great musician. She made a comment during that concert that she couldn't sing in school because she was told she didn't have a good enough voice. Really resonated with me because I have a similar deeper, raspy voice and same thing happened to me in the school chorus and I never felt I should sing. The energy it takes to keep that strumming up is incredible. I've tried, it's intense..Believe me you'll be sweating and in need of water.
I have been privileged enough to see Melissa 2x in concert. One of the most amazing performers that I have ever seen. She is one with her guitar. Her energy is infectious. God given talent.
Cathy O'Shea I saw her band on the “Yes I am” tour!!!! Totally blown away!!! I’ve owned and played Ovations. But never with the passion that she does!!!
I'm gonna need some water after watching this awesome woman! There's not another like her! Never will be. What a POWER~HOUSE! STILL LOVE THIS INCREDIBLE WOMAN
One of my favorites, this song is pure imagery and energy, just like all of the best Melissa Etheridge songs.are. I've followed Melissa off and on since 1990 and I've never been disappointed.
sometimes talent burns so bright blindness is the last call for survivals sake. this is genius. chords as solo. a voice that cuts the heavens wide. they used to make them saints. but the churches got too small. now we find them, like roadkill, aside the shoulders, and our head snaps back and back. this is what a miracle looks like, blisters hidden, scars aside, endless sleepless nights of ravage in self sacrifice, cast out in a moment of contact, of touch, of soul on soul. raw upon raw. fame is pointless, money cumbersome, this is what you live for; blood on the floor. you can't buy it, you can't have it, but it is given, and we should cherish it for it is rarefied and gone like a true love's kiss. this is genius.
First time this hit the air ways I stopped my truck turned around and headed for the nearest record store had to get it and who was this woman never for get that day......A+
The Sweet Devil has my soul. My Favorite Song!!! She has so much soul! She is a Rocking soul singer/musician /writer/ performer.... Thank you ,thank you, thank you Melissa Ethridge
This is such a brilliant performance, Melissa goes down into the audience at stage right, so cool. This is from the Live and Alone DVD, filmed 2001 at the Kodak Theatre, released 2002. Originally released on her first album, Melissa Etheridge, 1988. Still a rocking powerful song 21 years later.
She's not only a fantastic musician, she is also a fantastic person!
Nobody rocks an acoustic guitar like Mellisa

apparently the title YEs I AM was picked before she was outed; just coincidental timing you see.

When you want to get up in front of your phone and scream with the audience, because she is really this good as a live performer.
