I agree with Sonics answer of wanting everyone to be free. That’s a right that everyone has in the comic universe. I can understand why people would be upset and agree with Surge that ending his enemies would be the better solution to stopping their evil. However, that’s just not in line with Sonic’s character, throughout the comic we see that Sonic consistently wants to redeem his villains to the good side. I think that makes Sonic more noble because he’s willing to forgive them if they truly want it and even advocate for them like he did with Mr. Tinker even if it makes people angry with him like Espio was. Killing them would be stripping them of their freedom to choose the right path and seeing the error of their ways and I think that’s what Sonic really meant by his answer.

Honestly I'm not opposed to Sonics way of doing things in IDW. My issue is that it feels like they make it that only his perspective and morals matter and no one else. Only Espio brought it up and I felt that it was made to lean more towards Sonic's side but we didn't get to see much of the other. But no one else has brought it up and basically just has this "Sonic is always right" mentality. I'm not saying he should kill his enemies, as his approach to freedom fits his character well, but to just learn or lock up the villians or something. I get that he is meant to be a flat character, but some development in this aspect I think would do some good.

His theme song, "It Doesn't Matter" (he has multiple theme songs), literally says "It doesn't matter now what happens, cause I will never give up the fight. Long as the voice inside tells me to run and fight, it doesn't matter who is wrong and who is right." While Sonic commonly fights on the side of good, he isn't 100% a hero, nor does he intend to be. He's "just a guy who loves adventure", which commonly means that he fights bad guys to keep people free. If a bad guy came in and did nothing but destroy the government without taking out innocent civilians and without trying to rule the world, Sonic would likely aid them. Freedom is a chaotic and not-always-good force. Just as "Dark" doesn't always mean "evil", "Sonic" doesn't always equate to "good".

Is it fair for the countless innocents to suffer so that one day a single individual can get their happy ending? Doesn't the victims also deserves to be happy? And is there any limit of acceptable victims until the villain turns good? How much? 100? 1000? Is it at the millionth until the hero says stop, enough, you had your chance?
I mean, look at the metal virus, are we to believe there wasn't at least a few deaths from people who tried to flee from the infected and had accidents such as crashing their cars by going off the road, leaping out of a window in panic, or by being crushed by collapsing buildings or any rubble because of the chaos?

It's the philosophy of Christian God which is actually really funny that people are demonizing him for a thing that certain people praise and see the other as a great good guy.
Btw, having the freedom of being good or bad doesn't mean you won't get punished if you are bad he just wants them to figure it out themselves. Sonic actually does this several times, especially on the final episode of the second season in Sonic X if you know what I mean. Again, he doesn't impose his ideals, he teaches them more passively. Shadow is more opinionated and aggressive about that tho since they are opposites. It's why he wanted to kill all humanity as he saw them as irredeemable while he saw Maria as this angelic full of kindness figure. He also tried to kill Cosmo without letting her explain herself because, again, he sees the world in absolutes without mercy at all.
Sonic never killed Eggman which Shadow actually did at some point. Why should he do it now? These people just want to hate on IDW

Sonic himself, with many of his former enemies, proves that stance true as well. Surge herself eventually, Shadow, Omega, Emeral, etc. Heck, it's funny, cause another Speedster's rogues gallery also proves the point.
The Flash. He's redeemed numerous villains, and the only ones he hasn't are the ones who actively want to challenge Flash anyway. Who will help Flash when needed.

Essentially, yeah. That latter part is shared by SFDebris in regards to why Batman shouldn't kill, or why Superman shouldn't be the one saving everyone. It's not their job to be judge, jury, and executioner, but to protect those who can't protect themselves. Also, it brings up the question of, if not Sonic/Superman/Batman, than whose job IS it it fulfill people's dreams of the villain's absolution? Why does Shadow, or even E-126 Omega let Eggman slide and show him mercy, if they don't have the same moral qualms with killing that Sonic does? Why doesn't G.U.N assassinate Eggman in his sleep, if he's such a big threat? Why are we relying and even BEGGING on Sonic to do the job, when any one of us, with enough conviction and resources, do the job for him?
Finally, it's not Sonic who's responsible for Eggman's atrocities, as his origin has Eggman already doing evil before he met Sonic; if anything, Sonic is the one caught up in all of this, and is just trying to ensure no one gets hurt by his archenemy's antics. And, the fact that Eggman has shown - through his Mr. Tinker persona and other Enemy Mine scenarios where he had to team up with Sonic to deal with a bigger threat (even if he's usually the one who unknowingly releases it) - to be able to do the right and moral thing when push came to shove means that Sonic's philosophy that everyone has a chance to live their lives as they want without hurting others IS valid.

Killing deals a very serious blow and a bloody scar to one’s soul. It’s not something to take lightly at all. I don’t blame a single hero who decides to avoid that. They still do far more than an average person by constantly thwarting the villains plans.
Besides, Surge and her buddy were delusional AF. I wouldn’t tout what they said for even a grain of salt. They just want to kill Sonic the same way a drug addict wants their next dose, claiming it will bring them all the relief in the world. They would say anything if it threw Sonic off his game long enough for them to hurt him again.

It's really complicated because both sonic and surge are right in a way..
And as for sonic's character potryal in IDW I agree his character is Abit changes and he became abit too preachy but however...he still have those old traits of his character so his character in IDW isn't fully or entirely inconsistent or out of character in IDW and also he's not exactly too merciful like he wasn't merciful to Eggman, starline or zavok that matter when he was super sonic he just one-shot gigantic zavok without a second thought without any hesitation..and beat him to the ground so..no I don't think he's too merciful IDW sonic isn't stupid if he sees that he needs to put a stop to a villain he will without any hesitation like he did with zavok so I don't think his characterization in IDW is bad infact it's good and kinda fit with his personality too it's not exactly out of character maybe. And let's look at Kit. Tails basically had him converted to their side until Kit saw Surge and Sonic fighting and just reflexively snapped back to his programming. These two *can* be reasoned with, it's just going to take a lot more than a Sonic Pep Talk to get through to them both.

Well my power was out for a couple hours so I just reread both their initial fight and the rematch with the dynamo by lovely candlelight.
In the first fight he tells her repeatedly he doesn't want to fight, that he doesn't know what her deal is but he's willing to talk it out.
"I'm willing to chalk this up as a 'rocky start' and give you a do-over"
      "Just like that?"
      "Just like that."
      "The doctors, too?"
      "Even them."
"Reinvent myself? Choose who I want to be?"
      "That's the idea."
      "See the world...."
      "Yeah!"
      "That abandoned me?"
At that point she moves the goalposts. She says that if she volunteered for Starline's experiment she obviously wasn't in a good place to start, and if she were kidnapped nobody ever came for her. She essentially says that since she's had her past robbed from her she's going to take everyone's future. Which is just misplaced revenge.
In the second fight where she has the dynamo Sonic is still saying how he doesn't want to fight, how he's made peace with others that had started out as his foes, and that after finding out about what Starline did to them he understands why they are the way they are and that only makes him want to help them more. Right before the final blow he says "Starline's gone, freedom is right there waiting for you, just take it!" And while her expression the entire fight has been nothing but rage, she just responds "....I can't" with the most broken, solemn expression she'd shown since her reveal. At this point she's well aware she's going insane (literally being haunted by an imaginary Starline), but the only thing she thinks will fix that is eliminating Sonic. Going by context it *feels* like she wants Sonic to be right, that she can start over with a clean slate and not be fueled by all this negativity any more, but between the lost memories, brainwashing, and modifications she feels she's too far gone for anyone else to help her.

Sonic's choice for freedom gives his enemies a chance for change, if he ends his enemies one and for all is stripping them of their freedom, yes he can choose to do that, but he sees that everyone has freedom and doesn't want to steal their right to that freedom. I don't understand why people would hate his answer. Ending our enemies helps us, but it doesn't help our enemies. Sonic's enemies are people just like him, they are just on a different path, they may never change, but he knows he can't take their chance to change. that's literally what 'freedom' is though, letting others choose for themselves, instead of others forcing or choosing for them, maybe it was better for someone else to choose, but in the end, they were still given 'freedom'
That's Sonic, it's also why his character can be 'irresponsible', he hates being shackled

I have to call out IDW Sonic here, and SPECIFICALLY IDW Sonic, because it’s not that his mercy causes problems, it’s that IDW Sonic advocates for what I’m going to call ‘Reckless Freedom’, which is basically anarchy.
Look at any other Sonic and they’ll have VERY different approaches to Surge, but most of them will approach her with compassion and understanding. They’d fight her but understand that she needs help and someone needs to reach out to her no matter what to help her. Heck, I would argue even Boom Sonic would try.
But IDW Sonic does not. He advocates for a Freedom which absolves him of responsibility. A reckless freedom that leads to him ignoring the emotions and problems of others. For those who have read the IDW comics, did Sonic ever ONCE reflect on his role in Surge’s situation?
I know most will respond with he’s not responsible for her, and I would retort with not directly, but he IS the object of her worth, and it falls to him to amend that, and break that conditioning if he truly wants to give her freedom. Otherwise, he’s not offering mercy. He’s neglecting her, and when that happens, now anything she does is on him for not making the effort.
Most Sonics would not be wrong, but IDW Sonic is absolutely in the wrong, and he’s a bigger menace than Scourge.

TL;DR - Sonic's philosophy is a good one to follow, you just gotta think like Surge and make some exceptions sometimes.
I find this situation interesting so heres my take on things(also its 11:30pm for me so forgive me if somethings arent making the most sense).
Sonic's whole thing is that everyone deserves the right to be free, they should be able to do whatever they want. If they do good, cool. If they make a mistake, its their mistake to make and if they go on the dark path, he'd rough them up but not kill, as he wants his enemies to have the choice to either keep being a bad guy or do some good.
Of course, if theres an entity thats PURE EVIL and completely irredeemable (Think Dark Gaia, Chaos or THE END), he'll do his best to put them down.
Surge's point of view is equally valid though. Her whole is that if Sonic has a guy who's threatening his friends and is trying to kill him on multiple occasions, why let them live? Even if you want to give someone the freedom of their own decisions, its obvious some people just cant change and in her eyes have to be put down, which is fair.
For reference, the arc RIGHT BEFORE THIS, Eggman lost his memory of being evil and became "The Tinkerer", a jolly inventor persona who help the townsfolk with his inventions. Shadow wants to end him on the spot but Sonic is against it and through the power of Talk no Justu, Shadow doesnt murk The Tinkerer. A couple days later, Tinkerer geta his evil back from Metal Sonic and proceeds to dump Liquid Roboticizer on the entire town that took him in, Zombifying every living thing.
If Sonic let Shadow kill Eggman, on the spot, no one would have to go through the amount of surfering in that arc but Goody Toes Shoes disnt want to take the war criminal's rights that one time and end him.
But theres alot of cases where it wouldn't work: Shadow, Knuckles, Omega, all characters where if Sonic jumped to conclusions and ended their lives frame one without giving any of them a chance, they most likely would've been killed before switching sides. So his philosophy isnt that bad, it just shouldn't apply to war criminals like EGGMAN.
But idk, thats just me talking about the moral compass a blue hedhehog who runs fast throwing hands with an industrialist. I dont think manybwill read this anyway.

If Sonic just started killing his enemies… if he were to use his immense powers to be judge, jury, and executioner… what would stop him from being just as bad as those he would have killed. This is the same thoughts I have for why guys like Spider-Man or Daredevil shouldn’t kill… the power over life and death is a huge responsibility, but what right does any man have… even heroes… to life and death outside of the context of a war? What would stop Sonic from falling down a rabbit hole and becoming the very tyrant he fights against? I agree with Sonic, freedom is a risk and people will use it wrong… so they need to be stopped but if one were to place security over freedom, what would stop them from evolving into Injustice Superman? The last thing Sonic’s world would need is Injustice Sonic:

  • @benherrstudios

I believe that Sonic's logic is of pure intent, and I respect him for it, but at some point, that logic becomes irrelevant in some cases. Robotnik in Archie and IDW (especially during Metal Virus Arc) are absolutely irredeemable, and both have caused much death and destruction (Archie Robotnik wors by a much larger margin).
Robotnik in both these cases, will likely continue to one up each horrific act as part of his battle against Sonic, which will lead to even more catastrophic results.
In a story where the full reality of Robotnik's actions are taken into account, Sonic will at some point, be forced to get his hands dirty. Most likely through grief, anger, and guilt.

Especially if Eggman hurts Amy, the one Sonic cares about most. Despite any denial, it’s quite clear that Sonic secretly cares about Amy even more than Tails, and that’s saying a great deal.
Totally agree. Applies not just to Sonic’s world but ours as well. John MacArthur has a sobering message regarding those who are too late for God’s grace and mercy. I spread the freedom of God’s message to give people a second chance, and may the blessings of God befall all true converts; but at the same time I also acknowledge that some people are just undeniably irredeemable (i.e. Joe Biden & Gavin Newsom) and too late for second chances. It’s not that we don’t offer them forgiveness, it’s that they can never receive it because they’ve never truly repented. In fact, just like Eggman (aka Robotnik) they just keep getting worse and even more self-justified in their evil deeds. They think they’ll get away with it, but they’re just storing up more righteous wrath for themselves, and God will reward them according to the evil of their deeds.
And Sonic will soon do the same thing to Eggman if he takes it too far.

That's the Sonic I know and love, not the "holier than though because I don't kill" type of guy who won't even put Eggman in jail when he almost INTENTIONALLY destroyed the world just to prove he's a genius. During that time, he lived as if he was a kindly old man. And he only lost his memory because of what happened to him in Sonic Forces. Even as his ignorant, happy-go-lucky and short-lived alter ego, he wasn’t apologetic for his past life because he didn’t even remember the great evils he had done, up until Metal Sonic reunited with him. And even after he did remember, he still wasn’t sorry. And even worse yet, after being back to his old self, he still remembered quite well that he was previously Mr. Tinker and was friends with the people of Windmill Village, yet did nothing whatsoever to make amends for all his previous evils (which is the very least that he could have done) and was even willing to sacrifice those friends for the sake of controlling the entire world. @justynhill4814 Not true. No one is expecting him to be everywhere, but in the places where he is, he rarely takes the necessary precautions to prevent preventable things from happening. You can't be a hero and not fight for justice because justice is doing what is right in the face of injustice(doing what is wrong). Sonic has fought as a bringer of justice *multiple* times. Whether it's protecting Tails from his bullies, liberating an entire kingdom from a corrupt King, or liberating the entire world from Eggman, Sonic has constantly fought as a bringer of justice.
No one is expecting him to force people to change, Just take precautions so that those people won't hurt others. If someone you know is bad is trying to take someone else's life, Sonic has every right to take that person's life. You even admit that Sonic has already done it.
Sonic killed King Arthur and Imprisoned Erazor Djinn forever. Sonic had no problem killing King Arthur despite being warned, and not knowing he was a knight of the underworld. Sonic Imprisoned Erazor Djinn forever, even though he wasn't even inherently evil.
Eggman has proven himself to be more than an extinction level threat on multiple occasions. Eggman has tried to kill Sonic and his friends countless times (held Amy at gun point), almost blew up the planet, *actually* shattered the planet into pieces, enslaved an entire race of creatures across multiple planets, and almost permanently destroyed all of existence with a time god (twice), and the list goes on.
Mr.Tinker doesn't matter because Eggman has been a Multiversal, life-ending threat long before then. Sonic gave Mr.Tinker (Eggman) another chance. Did it work out? No.

Sonic did all those things to for justice but because he wanted to do nice and just help people. To me he reminds me more of anime characters like Goku and Luffy. These character have similar personalities and ideas of freedom or doing a action just for their own reasoning and feel like it’s nothing special or any deeper meaning to it.
Granted he’s not against prison or anything like that and he hasn’t just let Eggman walk away because of you remember they once left him in a blank dimension in Generation but he somehow managed to escape. It just usually that he gets blown up somewhere and sent across the world somewhere and he just disappears for months and just waits until he makes a new plan.
Yes he’s done evil but can actually think of other villains turn heroes that actually wiped out planets or done worse but still managed to change. Even Joker can change when he loses his drive and becomes apart of the system and live a normal life. Sonic isn’t even asking for Eggman to be a hero just live a life that doesn’t require to hurt people and Mr.Tinker was that and even Eggman couldn’t deny it that he liked that life but he’s bent on making the world the way he thinks will make it perfect.
It’s called endless possibilities and with what the new frontier dlc shown with Sage their possible is a chance for a change to happen with him.

@justynhill4814 Regardless of why Sonic chooses to do nice things and help people, the point is that Sonic constantly fights as a bringer of justice, so to say he doesn't wouldn't be accurate to his character.
To be fair yeah, Eggman *might* be able to escape prison like how he escaped White Space, but not only did he have help from himself, but we don't even know what he had on him to do so. Eggman doesn't always get launched away though. sometimes Sonic and friends just watch him fly away in his Egg Mobile or whatever and let him go.
Those other villains don't really matter though, because Sonic has already killed and imprisoned people who are *Way* lesser threats than Eggman, meanwhile Eggman gets off scott free most of the time, free to endanger the world and kill more people again.
Eggman having a soft boiled, sunny side won't change much though. Eggman has shown to care more about the creations he's proud of like Metal Sonic, Sage, and Belle but those are his creations. He had his chances at Redemption and chose not to take it more than once.

@@mr.kingkayyy7401- sometimes it takes more than once or even a million chances. Times are changing and the world isn’t defenseless to Eggman as it was years ago.
And i rather take the chance with Sage to help ease up to show him the possibilities of changing. Although we have to worry about if a situation that happened with his grandfather would happen if anything happened to Sage.
People die weather it’s from Eggman or some thug on the street or natural causes or natural disasters. Sonic isn’t going to shackle himself to the needs of the world when they demand it and he knows things wouldn’t change if he keeps solving people problems because they have to grow themselves he only their to give it a push.
I do want to point out and blame Dr.Starline for prematurely bringing Eggman back. Yes I’ve heard it before it was Metal Sonic but Starline was the main factor in how they reunited again and he was someone nobody predicted in existing. It was said that Eggman would have eventually returned on his own but during that time would he have appreciated his life more as Mr.Tinker.

This is something I commonly think about (I’m a big Batman fan). When do the casualties become too much? When does someone become irredeemable? How do you become judge, jury, and executioner without you yourself becoming blindsided to your own personal biases? The concept of death to your enemies has a spectrum of answers. For Bruce, he refuses to kill lest he fall off the deep end and become the one thing he swore to fight. For Dick Grayson, killing is survival and the reassurance that they can’t hurt anyone ever again. For Jason, killing is a tool to better the world, because you can’t help someone who doesn’t want to be helped. Tim is… nearly apathetic about it. Death is a necessity for life, but he’s willing to save as many as he can, even if it means the casualities of an enemy.
How do you quantify a life for the safety of others? How do you quantify the *possibility* of change for the better to the *possibility of change for the worst?

Batman primarily doesn't kill for fear of losing his sanity. His secondary concern is for the sake of any loved ones the criminals he fights have or may have, lest they seek vengeance upon him. A killer did it to him; he doesn't want to be the cause of that feeling to someone else. Reformation is all but tertiary. Batman knows there are those who are beyond hope: Joker, Bane, Scarecrow, Hush, Victor Zsasz, Professor Pyg, etc.

I wonder what the creators of sonic wouldve thought knowing that some day there'd be comics discussing his personal philosophy about whether it's right to become the judge, jury and executioner of his enemies.

A lot of people seem to side with Sonic on this one. As much as I like Sonic and can understand his point of view I have to disagree. Once someone crosses a line of mass murder, destruction of communities, cities, continents or just mass destruction in general, still giving that person an option to be good and turn around when they clearly don’t want to seems foolish. Just like Sonic said, we have the freedom to make our own choices. Unfortunately, those choices can have consequences.
You rob a bank and go to jail. But you decided afterwards that you were wrong to do that and want to be good. But you’re still in jail. Why is that though? Because your actions have consequences. Allowing villains to continuously cause harm and pain to others when you can stop them permanently but don’t because you want them to choose good is what will only end up backfiring in the long run. At least for most cases. But that’s just my opinion.

That's very black and white thinking. Tell me, how many villains has prison created? Sending people to prison statistically makes them more likely to commit crimes once they get back out, precisely because prison destroys opportunity.
If criminals are made to reap their consequences, then surely, we as a society must reap ours for choosing to perpetuate cruel systems, that serve mostly to glean a perverse glee in punishment, creating worse people and locking them in a cycle of crime in the process.

Both sonic and Eggman proved themselves to be wrong by pursuing Surge and Kitt in order to attempt an alliance with them before the other.
Kitt said it best by stating that neither side truly cared about the duo and both sides only care about what Surge and Kitt can do.

Sonic doesn’t have to end(kill) his enemies. He could put them in a special jail made for them so they never get out! I think sonic is irresponsible. He is not thinking of the well-being of the people of his world or his friends. Sonic is just an adrenaline junkie risking everything just for thrills! If he truly cared he wouldn’t be so selfish!

Literally Sonic has left Eggman in a blank void space in Generations so no nothing hold Eggman back for long. He even left him stranded in space and he found his way back.
Also every time sonic beats Eggman he usually blows up and get sent halfway across the globe somewhere.
Sonic is responsible and irresponsible at the same time like this fight with Surge. Instead of thinking she’s some new evil he’s learn from experience that the first fight is usually from a misunderstanding and try to get to know Surge. While it didn’t help calm Surge rage he still kept having fun which made her more and more mad.
