Sure fit Design system is so much easier than Luderloh. ‘Truing’ is SureFit Design means every corner seam is 90 degrees so seams match perfectly. I enjoyed seeing the Luderloh system and again see how very clever you are! Thanks!
I’ve been sewing Lutterloh for years. It’s worth learning especially when you sew for several people or change sizes yourself. BTW, the pattern pieces can be enlarged when copying, it won’t affect the plotting. Leave the pattern pieces on the plotted out paper for changes and double checking. Add more seam allowance where needed. It’s made me a more fearless sewer and more capable of design changes, Franken-patterning, and getting a good fit.
This is all very interesting and exciting! I can’t wait to see your final dress! I absolutely love this project and all the steps that are involved. I find the idea of using our precious fabric a bit terrifying but this sewing challenge might be just what I need!
FYI - The pattern Whitney is using is located in Supplement 308 Pattern 132. Also, always make a copy of the pattern sheet so you don’t damage the original and you can cut each pattern piece with numbers out and leave it attached to the drafted pattern piece when you can.
Yes, I scan the pattern I am using. I just tape it to my paper and leave it there. I write the model # and supplement number and make all the marking. I like how you trued up the shoulders, side seams, and cuffs. I will follow that. I have brown paperboy can bet I will get medical exam paper next time. I always reinforce the X with tape.
This system of pattern drafting is clever. It utilises a much scaled down version of the garment as a basis to make the full size one, a technique that adapts to many types of physical construction. I’m glad you point out how important accuracy is in drafting to full size. A millimetre (0.1 cm) or two out, especially on longer lines , can throw the process out completely. A fascinating video to watch. Thanks.
As you've been talking about the Lutterloh system, it's been nagging at the back of my mind because it seemed so familiar. And then I figured it out. At some point, I acquired an unused Lutterloh system from I'm not quite sure when, but I think sometime in the 70's or 80's. So now I'm excited to break it open and take a look!
I like the Luterloh system. I did measure my bust waist and hip. I found out I needed to increase these areas somewhat what. I just did the pivot method and it took no time. Little tip with tape is to fold in the ends so ends sticks to itself. The tape will be easier to pull up from each side. I got myself a new cutting mat from wawack yesterday. So fun to get some nice sewing things. I have another little gadget for storing threaded sewing needles hopefully coming into day. It was free!
Great to see a demo as i find your posts so useful. I would agree with previous advice to photocopy the pattern. I also put a cork coffee mat under the pattern paper so the pin can be used without damaging the cutting table.
You should make a copy of the page of ur pattern then u don't have to worry about the actual pattern. I'm glad you mentioned about the straight grain lines and the markings for the sleeves. I was wondering about those things
this lutterloh system is interesting. i never heard of it before but it opens up a lot of possibilities, especially hacking. hmmmm. i might have to invest . .. .
This is a very interesting system. But is it possible that you missed a dot at the front shoulder? It was above the shoulder near the neckline, or am I wrong? Very excited how the dress will turn out 👍
WOW 🤯 my mind is blown! I’ve heard about this system but this was soooo informative. I do have one question…if the pattern is custom fitted to your body why would you need to do an FBA or any other adjustments? Btw I have a 34” bust measurement and size B bra size so I might be missing something here.l 😂. I recently got a Ditto pattern projector and it takes about 10 body measurements. If you input your measurements and use one of their patterns it makes the measurements custom sized to fit your body. I’ve only made one blouse with it and it fit really good so I’m really just curious. 🤔. I think I might ask Santa for this Lutterloh system for Christmas…it seems really awesome! Thanks for sharing your journey with us! Also love your dress! You look great as always!
Because this system only uses the 2 measurements, there is a bit more room for needed adjustments. However, I'll be showing my wearable muslin this coming Friday and I only had to make two small adjustments to the pattern for my final!
Whitney - Am I missing something or is this system really best for someone who is close to a standard size? The failure to require a comparison between the upper bust and full bust troubles me. I am small busted. If I use just the full bust measurement, the shoulders are almost inevitably far too narrow. On woven patterns I do a small bust adjustment to compensate for this. I would think you have the opposite problem because you have mentioned in the past that you sometimes need a narrow shoulder adjustment. Maybe next week you can address your shoulder fit and how to make the neck/shoulder fit when using only a full bust measurement.
You're correct that I often have to do narrow shoulder adjustments when I don't do an FBA. I was also curious how this system would work for that. I'm showing my wearable muslin in this coming Friday's video with the changes I'm making (only 2 changes) and one of them is a narrow shoulder adjustment. I would think, in your case, I would use my upper bust measurement as the full bust number to make sure the shoulders and neckline fit properly.
This was very interesting. I've always considered Lutterloh very mysterious. I'm wondering what is the benefit? Is it better fitting? Easier to fit? Time saving? Ability to hack patterns?
Is the grainline shown on the small pattern piece when drafting? If so, could you please share where/how? I've made 3 items from Lutterloh that turned out great, but was never exactly sure regarding the grainline. Thanks.
I make the grainline in line with the crosshatch on the pattern piece, so parallel with the vertical crosshatch line. Does that make sense? If the item is cut on the fold, then the grainline would be parallel to the fold line.
Use the 3rd dot down from the shoulders in the armscye using your upper bust measurement for your shoulder and then increase to full bust to side seam. This works extremely well for c or d cup. If you are bigger, put the rest in a full bust adjustment. The fit is flawless and well worth the effort. Don't be tempted to increase anymore out to the side seam. You need the extra fabric at the centre of bust not at side seam. Remember to adjust the sleeve if necessary. Sleeves are easy to fit because they don't have the volume of ease as the big 4 in the cap of the sleeve. Trousers are very good fit through the crotch. Fit one pair and use that curve for all trousers in the book. Easy. The key to lutterloh is to take your measurement accurately because there is not much ease in a lot of their patterns. So don't guess your measurement because it won't fit.
I’m posting mid video so I don’t know yet if you catch it but you missed your top dot at the edge of the paper on your shoulder! Shoulder should be slanted up at neck edge
My mom bought this system and took classes when I was in high school in the 1960s. We tried to make a simple blouse. The armholes were so small, I couldn’t get my arms in. It was totally unwearable.

Thanks for watching!
Wow! I haven’t seen the Lutterloh system in 20 years! Didn’t know they still existed.
It is really fun to look through the potential patterns!
The notches are already built in to the pattern. They are each of the dots. They will join up to their corresponding pieces 😊
Love that!
It’s the blue tape dispenser that is the removable tape. I’ve only ever found it on Amazon or through Sure Fit Designs.
Thank you! I knew that existed!

Those are some great endorsements!

That's so smart!
I’m considering making a copy and laminating the copy for repeated use keeping the original as masters 😊
Whitney, your dress is sooo flattering! Fits you beautifully and expresses your personality perfectly!
Thank you!

Give it a try! It will give you a little bit of a challenge!

Yay for free gifts!!

Agreed!
Thank you Whitney for this video. I have the lutterloh system, but hesitate to try it. Glad you are showing this tutorial. 👏🏼❤️
You can do it!

Great point!
I’ve been really interested in seeing this demonstrated. Some very nice patterns in recent releases.
Glad you enjoyed!
I'm definitely going to dust off my Lutterloh patterns and give it a try.
You should!
Thank you for showing this! I’ve seen Wendy use the system with her makes but I didn’t realize how easy it actually is to do
It's pretty easy!
What an interesting self drafting me method! I'd never heard of it but it looks really good
❤️❤️❤️
❤❤ That’s an interesting pattern option.
I think so too!
This is very much like Sure-fit Designs.
I'll have to check that out.
this lutterloh system is interesting. i never heard of it before but it opens up a lot of possibilities, especially hacking. hmmmm. i might have to invest . .. .
Be sure to check it out and there's a discount code in the description box.

Wow this system is pretty cool!

This is really cool!

That is so cool 😊
❤️❤️❤️
Me again! Always best to photocopy your pattern then cut out each piece you’re going draft your measurements from x
Great tip!
It would be helpful to you to make a photocopy of the booklet pattern you use therefore your book pattern stays unmarked. Love your videos.😊
Great tip!
I learned with Lutterloh that you should draw with your underbust measurement and then, if necesary, do an fba
I have used the upper bust measurement then at the side seam point then switch to full bust. Yes, I use 3 measurements.
This is interesting. He had me just use the two. I'm showing the wearable muslin on Friday and I only had to make 2 adjustments!
Still trying to figure out how to get a good fit from only a couple of measurements. Looking forward to seeing how the wearable muslin fits.
Stay tuned! I'll be sharing my steps along the way!
That is so interesting, I may have to try it out 😊
You should!

You could also use removable tape instead of the weights. It might be less cumbersome.
That's a good idea!

I am interested in your opinion. I am an experienced sewer and found lots of challenges with this system.
It keeps my brain excited. Like a puzzle!

Can you photocopy your little pattern at same size
I sure could!
I am curious to see how using your full bust measurement works, vs. using your high bust and doing a FBA.
Use the 3rd dot down from the shoulders in the armscye using your upper bust measurement for your shoulder and then increase to full bust to side seam. This works extremely well for c or d cup. @@audreywring1920 Thanks for that explanation. Good to know there is that option.
I'm showing the wearable muslin this coming Friday. I only had to make two adjustments!
