Sometimes you come across a piece that is great for what it is, but, in this case, the music is simply great. His motivic construction, ingenuity of variation and fabulous orchestration simply blows me away. Kudos to Järvi for the very well performed recording and his recognition of the worthiness of this piece as it stands on its own merits.

Thanks for uploading truly one of the most monumental works in American classical music. I personally prefer Stokowski's recording with its slower, more forceful delivery, especially of the first movement. Järvi seems to take the same lighter approach he did with his recording of William Grant Still's symphonies; this sort of more brisk and panoramic collection of burgeoning American pathos. And while his are my favorite recordings of those symphonies, I don't think it works as well here, where Dawson's thunderous climactic eruptions get passed too quickly.
In any case, like any great work it really is demanding and deserving of the kind of interpretive protectiveness by those so captured by its ideas. Thanks again.

And I hear some Dvořákiana in the beginning. Dawson is unique and above colours...

For me, the most stunning African American Symphony of all time!! William Dawson did his thing with this and for it to be his only symphony is a CRIME!!! and you know why.

And this word is NORMAL. Those gresy guys who used to utter this word in a very disgusting way can not make this noble vord less noble... No to racism... No to rules against words and REAL meanings.
Great music indeed! I love it.

Beethoven’s personal quartet violinist was black. There was a “black Mozart”. There were several excellent “folksy” black writers in Twain’s era. BTWashington and GWCarver were geniuses outright. Black spirituals etc were a source of mainstream 30-70’s popular music culture. Black contributions to Am are more numerous than I’ll ever fathom, so are Native Am and MANY other groups. This does NOTTT mean that white contributions to Am are fake or non-existent. Back in the 60-80’s, Am were taught in school that their country is a rich tapestry of many interwoven influences that shouldn’t “despise/reject” each other and are all fundamentally unified by “being American”. Then, unscrupulous lawyers worked their “toxic balkanizing magic” to promote the idea that everyone MUST FIRSTLY “accentuate their faith/ethnic/color differences”.
PS) Unfortunately, much “garbage” was also taught in those schools: the “food pyramid” and “eco religionism” which promoted that having children was unethical/selfish and that ecological goals should always take 100% absolute precedence over everything else. 🙄

Pretty weird comment. What made you lash out under this video? What is your problem? This self pity of some white Americans has no limits. Let's talk about the merits of this wonderful work. Let's talk about Dawson's impressions and roots and why he wrote this work. The uploader is white. LOL

No, there was not a ''black Mozart''. There will never be another Mozart, neither black nor white.

@@Elena-jcwtm It has nothing to do with William Dawson's achievement. Plus that black Mozart thing is taken out of context. Mozart was inspired by St. Georges Sinfonia Concertantes and was one of few who equaled Mozart in musicianship, especially as a violinist. There is this unproven claim that Mozart was envious of St. Georges because "He is the most accomplished Man in Europe in Riding, Running, Shooting, Fencing, Dancing, Musick. He will hit the Button, any Button on the Coat or Waistcoat of the greatest Masters. He will hit a Crown Piece in the Air with a Pistoll Ball" (from the diary of John Adams)

@@bartjebartmans Bologne was a mediocre composer. There was no reason for Mozart to be envious of him. He never even mentions Bologne in his letters.
