Revisiting the 6497 watch movement - with modern Onshape techniques (LONG!)

  • [OK fair warning, this is a long form exploration rather than a quick flashy demo!]
Join me behind the scenes for an in-depth exploration of the process I'm taking to completely redo the venerable 6497 watch movement. You've seen this assembly many times in CAD, mainly due to the popularity of a particular user's Grabcad upload. We are all indebted to this model (and to the longevity and robustness of the original 6497 design!)
Anyway, I've gone back to square one and using a variety of tools & techniques at my disposal in Onshape, some up with a robust, parametric, flexible approach. No imports, this is all native Onshape. It also factors in some of the real-life design considerations (endshake allowance, etc) as well as using accurate cycloidal gear teeth profile rather than approximations.

Gives you an appreciation of the crazy fine tolerances involved in making mechanical watches!

I can easily watch a 2h+ version of this. Seriously, I learned a lot in a few days just by watching your videos. Let me know if there is a way to support the channel

Thanks so much for this comment! Feel free to share any videos you think others will benefit from - I know this is unlikely to be the kind of content that goes viral (although this one seems oddly appropriate for TikTok :rimshot: )
To be honest the best way to support this channel is to use Onshape, be active on our forums, and spread the word about Onshape - we've come a LONG way in a short time and I think you can see there's a lot of depth and breadth to it now.

Can you simulate mainspring movement and how?

the biggest takeaway from this video, by far, was the distinction between "drawing" vs "designing"

Yes there is a world of difference between drawing and designing. For many people this is what CAD still means, and that's fine: Computer Aided Drawing, or Computer Aided Documentation. However there is clearly more to Computer Aided Design... On a side note, it is 2024 (last time I checked), and isn't everything Computer Aided?? Perhaps we should upgrade our acronyms?
