- Take in the sights and amazing pilot experience of BlackFly, the distinctive tilt aircraft from Pivotal. In 2011, we were the first to fly a manned fixed-wing electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Today, Pivotal designs, develops, and manufactures easy-to-fly, light eVTOLs for a wide range of uses.
For more information on Pivotal, visit pivotal.aero.
BlackFly is Pivotal’s eVTOL aircraft, offered to a select group of early access customers. Pivotal’s fourth generation aircraft, Helix, is now available to all eligible customers.

I'm radically more impressed with getting through the bureaucracy than I am with the affordable tech.
If you sit back and think about that, you should be both.
Thank you, Oracle. ;)
what bureaucracy, part 103, meet the weight ?
What bureaucracy? Trump will approve this in a heart beat. He's a regulations slasher!
Ultralights cannot fly over populated areas. So it can only be flown in remote locations (as in the video). Unless they can convince the FAA to modify their regulations.
I love how it just sort of lands on its butt and is like, "Yeah it's cool I'll chill in the grass I don't need legs."
Sure it could happen, but there are a few things that will make that less likely. For instance, in many electric aircraft, each motor is powered individually. I don't know if that's the case with this aircraft or not. This aircraft has the option of having a parachute as well. Even if it loses power, with enough speed, it looks like this craft could probably glide to some extent. But of course safety issues are a concern, and safety is one area that will have to be addressed as these and similar craft are developed. But all aircraft have their dangers, and these aircraft are not unique in that regard. My guess is that they will be, on the whole, safer than automobiles, once they are fully developed and have all the reliability and safety issues worked out.
This is why helicopters never succeeded
I don't know what you mean when you say helicopters never succeeded. Helicopters have been very successful in a lot of circumstances. They haven't replaced planes for most long distance travel, but they're widely used for a lot of other purposes.
Lee was being sarcastic, Mike.
lol Yeah I should have seen that but I thought he was replying to my comment and not The Oracle's
The landing system is very smart, Iam glad to live with some smart people on this planet.
And this actually make me dream, thank you.
Engineer: makes belly
IAmVerySmart: my time has come
This is 2021 calling. We are here to crush your dreams. My how things were so much simpler way back in 2019.
It's amazing! It's really pure science fiction that becomes reality!
+Luca
But with a person in it (unlike many others).
I thought we have choppers for quite a while now, don't we?
Other Aspects of Game Changer Status: This could be applied as a very useful alternative vehicle for persons in remote regions, for yachts as alternative to helicopter, as a good option for large farms, ranches, or wild life refuges; and for emergency uses. So, the specifications seem very impressive such as only about 30 minutes to charge, 25 mile range, and so on.
And when it is too good to be true ....
the real break of science fiction is when we have a powerful new fuel source and propulsion system instead of these modified helicopters
Ahh the most beautiful large Metro Area on earth (arguably). And what an invention; an invention (in my mind) inspired by the time and place that is the primary reason this is the most innovative area on earth (Natural beauty, natural environment, diversity of climate, diversity of population, culture, and diverse unique weather phenomenon/patterns, that vary broadly across the Bay Area; From semi-arid almost desert like conditions, to temperate coniferous rain-forest, to Mediterranean breezes, green mountains and pastures, cool fog rolling in over the Coast Range, - to ocean landscapes, and some of the best sunrises and sunsets in the world. This cinematography captured much of that natural beauty. And the video production was excellent.
As someone who can no longer fly light aircraft, seeing this took my breath away... in fact I felt emotional and even had a tear in my eye, and it brought that longing to get back in the sky feeling... I am so impressed!
Not gonna lie, I too had a tear in my eye the first time I watched this. Very emotional for some reason.
Beautiful and so much safer than other designs I have seen.
I am a fan of quotes and want to share one of my favorites that I have applied in my life. I don't remember who said it or when (I do have it filed somewhere) but here it is... "Better to be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt. " Most of the negative comments come from non-engineers, i.e. Aerospace engineers. I guess that in the 9 years that Backfly has been under development, they would have not thought it through enough.
Blackfly...excellent work. Wishing you market success!
0:40 : That shot is incredible! It felt like watching a sci-fi movie.
The Arrival , Oblivion , PROMETHEUS
Also 2:08
Now I can find that Bigfoot fucker when I fly over the woods with this shit
Oblivion makes most sense with M83 also responsible for the soundtrack.
the song is from M83 - "outro" and using for "Interstellar" Nolan's film
With a few improvements, this thing could almost look like boba Fetts ship
It's called Fett's Vette
Pro pic checks out
Slave1? Yeah I can see that go over well with a lot of people.
It's amazing! Range: 25 miles with 200 lbs payload. Switch to hydrogen propulsion. Cleanest fuel, powerful, and you'll get range. Electricity is limited by our current technology and fusion energy isn't here yet.
We could probably figure out fusion energy if the government funded a 1.4 Trillion USD program. I say 1.4 Trillion because that is the cost of the F-35 Lightning II program. Fusion energy is entirely possible, we just need to develop the technology for it, and that costs money. So until someone spends enough money, whether it be the government or someone like Elon Musk, or Elon Musk himself, then fusion energy probably won't become a reality for many years.
We love such amazing inventors & innovators! Congrats & welcome to the future!
You've made us all proud with your achievement.
Hope OPENER will give nothing but GOOD to future generations 😉
my one and only dream before I die is officially now to own one of these. this is amazing.
The best thing I've seen since StarWars.
A Nobel Prize for design and an Oscar for the action and making it real.
star wars was shit this year... jus sayin,, even without the cultural drama around it it was just an awful movie.... so pls compare it something else, this thing deserve it ;)
Lucky me! I know only one StarWars movie. Star Wars 1.
Tremendous achievement guys. Hope to see the skyes of Portugal full of Black Flies really soon.
Its so beautiful. Im going to cry.
Congrats Blackfly!
"Opener Aero" [nautical] engineering.
"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."- Arthur C. Clark
Cool Magic ForUm ever used a waffle iron😉
What's your point? Are you so stupid that a manned drone seems like magic to you?
Although my comment in this channel i wrote after three years but i had written a lot of comments in other channels much earlier than this with regards to evtol.
To be honest, opener/blackfly is the simplest yet very smart, practical and affordable. The best is it can be flown without pilot license.
Brilliant!!!
Hope my dream to fly can come true.
This is a brilliant concept in flight technology. This could fix a lot of problems. As a former Navy Jet Mechanic, I just love this.
i was just crying with the joy of the music. Amazing!
This is amazing! Also, excellent song choice!
Please make this a common reality before I die. Thank you. Thaaaank you.
It doesn't look anything like a car, but is very cool looking. The area this filming takes place is absolutely gorgeous.
I'm thinking my arm won't reach the drive-through window.
lol...epic.
I’m buying one as soon as they are for sale...
This is super impressive. Congrats

It's also got military applications, although maybe in the form of a beefed-up BlackFly. Could see this being used by infantry or marines.
Fantastic technology and the first thing you think of is 'military applications'. Gross.
Grow up! It wasn't my first thought, but regardless of whether it was or not it doesn't change a damn thing about the aircraft, because it still has military applications by the very fact it is fantastic technology. And if you don't realise it, you need to get a chuffing education. The US military, for instance, spends billions each year on R&D, including on experimental aircraft. Stupid little boy!
Tbh as much as a discovery of fusing a helicopter, drone, and car together is huge, in order for the company to survive and be viable, it should step into the car market, and market itself as an alternative way to travel. That way consumers will then buy and invest. I may not be an engineer or businessman, but after following the 80’s, 90’s, 2000’s, and 2010’s, things need to be introduce slowly so we don’t instantly boycott. It took computers 30 years to get where they are now. And the plane is barely a century old.
Propellers are pushing wind pressure under the wing creating additional uplift power. If flying low over the surface they can be more efficient flyers and have longer range.
Wow... less moving parst, ultra light, powert by DC, that`s a hit! thumbs up!
I was stoked about this and started fantasizing about were I could fly, but then remembered 'ultralights' are very flight limited here in the US: can't fly in restricted airspace (within Class A, Class B, Class C, or Class D) or over cities, towns or other settlements. Can you really only operate this vehicle with up to 20 mph winds? Will you be using advancements in battery tech to enable flights further than 25 miles in the actual production models???
Can it glide controllably without power?
I doubt it......... an emergency parachute may be the best bet ...
I think they stating that yes. But not controllably. More like a falling leave.
Cool! So, how loud is it?
72 dBA @ 150 feet (comparable to a car on the highway they claim)
How loud do you scream?
How loud do you yell "Allahu Akbar" when you crash this into hundreds of innocent people?
It's a neat piece of engineering, but I'm not taking it. In fact, "bekomme der flak artillerie."
that is outside at a distance but how loud is it inside ? :)
Kenneth B how loud do you scream “Im an uneducated racist pig” 🐽
I'm going to guess..... $100,000. And I must add this is an INCREDIBLE piece of technology.
By the time they enter production they may be. The stated price is "the price of a new SUV", which I'm guessing is the 40-60k range?
Amazing Achievement - Well done !!
But does it have a cup holder though?
Made to Miata specs.
Mason Totten
More importantly, does it have an iPhone charger?
It has a cup holder with a small gyroscope that keeps the cup upright at all times.
YES YOUR .... IT.
It has a cigarette lighter (costs extra :)

i am a wild life refuge, livin in a very remote suburb .hope it can land in basements
I'm going to take this to Alaska and have a blast with bush flying!!
Perfect choice of song
the most awesome music choice for this awesomely cool video. thank you guys for making sci fi come to life! keep up the epic work!
정말 멋있다 개발자분들에게 경의를!
Respect for engineers
Nick, i'm stunned by your generosity. thank you for handling all expenses for the first two years, to include diagnostic and upkeep expenses, and parking. You da man!!
One word. AWESOME.
I am impress, it is looks like alien ship
Wow, Amazing ! Pure Technology ! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
That is amazing !!!!! You guys are beauty’s for this !!!!!!!
Pure genious Mr. Lang.
Not sure it would handle very well in windy conditions
Advanced aeronautics scientist Dave Smith with some fantastic input. I don't know if the build team considered wind conditions... Your UA-cam comment may save millions of lives.
Well Rob...you're close ....Actually have a degree in Aerospace Engineering and have been a pilot for over 37 years (both Military and now Commercial). Just the fact that all of the footage is shot in calm wind conditions caught my untrained eye. But what the hell do I know !!
@Dave Smith - They specify 25 mph max wind for takeoff
@@davesmith7399 Thanks for letting us UA-camrs know
Rob N You got told, son
Master piece
Wow! Realy amazing! Cool concept!
just brillint on all levels
This and Lilium are quite the impressive flying taxis i've seen so far.
Great job
Great concept! 30 miles on a full charge is that max??? Would it glide if all enginges fail for a safety gliding landing?
No glide ratio so it really needs a chute for the whole thing and / or to only fly a few feet above the ground (no more roads would be very good).
This is perfect! Now I can find Bigfoot when I fly over the pacific north west.
So happy to see this coming to market at a reasonable price. I would think there will be low cost kits out soon. With all the greens getting the roads closed on public lands this may be the only way for many to rightfully visit their public land. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
beautiful
That is very cool...how much does it cost and what is the projected range?
There are workarounds for the low flight time. The hard part is getting it legal for urban areas. There's got to be some convention or engineering that can be done to make that doable. Anyone with a large backyard could then have one, and with longer flight time it would be finally a useful vehicle.
Finally we have TIE fighter!
TO DAYS DATE 6/8/19 ANY UPDATE?? COST? WHEN WILL IT BE FOR SALE. NOT TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR?
So whether or not Opener Aero realise it, this craft has military potential. In fact one of the first things which came to my mind was the Avrocar Flying Saucer project. Of course, the difference here is that the Blackfly is a fixed-wing fan-driven craft, whereas the Avrocar was a coanda-effect disk using a jet engine.
It seemed a little strange that every time they showed the pilot, they were trying to stretch up to look over the front, like the front flies higher than the rear. Neat lookin little gadget.
Cool, of course...sort of like the flying harness.
But...just how long can this thing remain aloft? For how long can it fly?
As an LA native the prospect of not driving in traffic anymore brings tears to my eyes. If you need someone to beta test this please let me know.
Defiantly looks badass. Wonder how well it turns at medium to high speeds
Wow this looks a lot better and more affordable than the Ehang 184 crap hope it gains popularity
I hate to be nit picky, but there should be backup helicopter/plane adapted safety incase something goes wrong like engine failure or a short circuit. AND The build itself should be able to go on roads.
Yes !!!! Finally... well done
It's an exciting video, made for investors, obviously. Unfortunately, youtube is almost maggoty with similar CGI-enhanced videos of personal aircraft that are never going to sell a single model. I'll get even more excited when I see a real person buy and operate one of these.
Will I be able to fly this in my local town to the grocery store? Or will there be too many regulations?
LOVE the scenery where this was recorded, looks like the front range of Rapid City-Black Hills, anybody recognize where this was filmed?
Project lovely, Float like a ufo.
Is the hybrid or bev? If bev, then what’s the charge time and how far per charge? If hybrid, what’s the range?
a 2 passenger option would get my money all day
Will it fly with the wings in a horizontal position? If so, how fast will it fly? Would it fall out of the air? I do like the product.
How many of these have been delivered in the U.S? It's on sale now?
Hmmm... affordable.. thats a pretty subjective term.
Like the electric cars, solar, wind etc...why do I feel that somehow the taxpayer will or already IS paying for this idea? This is just another fancy money magnet and investor net to "use other people's money" to fund your idea. We already have ultralights. I owned one and the thought of everyone having access especially the "well heeled" scares the crap out of me.
Super! Well done, guys and gals!
Yeah I want one.
original shape and landing method. how efficient is it for the horizontal flight component compared with an electric glider (that does not vtol but that is optimized for horizontal flight) is it 5x less efficient if we just look at wing lengths ratio or 500x less efficient due to global design of the aircraft ??thanks for trying to innovate in flying business
Pickering to Toronto is 30km, this thing can fly 40km. This could cut 1.5 hrs of traffic into 20 min. This would save so much time!
An ultralight cannot be flown over populated areas and you're not flying anywhere near Billy Bishop airport without the ability to interact with ATC
I have an improvment idea: make the glas visual wider like a bubble. (That does non affect on the flying ofc.)
Copyright idea ©
Still gives me chills!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When can I BUY????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
this is the best i've seen until now
El futuro ha dado comienzo! wooo!!!
Congratulations @Opener team, Amazing machine. I would love to know if it is possible to be fitted with solar cells as the outer skin, so that the batteries get charged to give more milage?
Wow!
Great job but why not electric jet turbines I assume because of cost also that would make a difference in the overall design which by the is awesome but it would be cleaner. Coming from a designer / engineer. How much thrust is each motor producing?
simple and ingeniously
What about the estability? It's easy to see the inclination while flying...
Can you give Doug DeMuro a weekend with this?
Mamiya645 Fantastic idea.
"You know I really didn't like the cupholders, that were way too simple and not chromed out enough, neat!"
"Ladis and gentlemen, this is a 150K flying car you can take home after 5 mins. of learning how to fly" "But, tow trucks would not be able to come to rescue in Santa Cruz mt. if you run out of battery and land in middle of big basin"
Doug DeMuro the kind of guy to read outloud the instructions on a condom wrapper in a public restroom
I think that is really neat! *chuckle*
Tha design is pure genious.
When will it be available for purchase and how much?
Amazing
I am ready
That is pretty cool. Only thing that concerns me about it is that humans can't even seem to mass operate in a two-dimensional, laid-out road system without crashing into each other. How much more would they in a 3D airspace?
I like the simplicity. Excluding the propellers...there aren't any moving parts that could break.
