    In their earlier days Rammstein had kind of a right wing image because of Tills rolling „R“, the appearance of the band in general and the music video of their Depeche Mode cover Stripped which contains a lot of clips of Leni Riefenstahl movies.
    Because of this they made this song to tell everybody that their hearts beat left

    Flake has a lot of nervous energy..back when they first started performing Flake would be walking all over the stage...which was fine at first but as they started using more and more pyro it was starting to get dangerous for Flake to be walking all over the stage so they came up with the treadmill so now Flake can still move and walk without getting hurt...his excessive energy is one of the reasons why he comes up with all the crazy shit they do onstage...I fimd it humorous when I hear some reactors say poor Flake when most of what happens to him on stage are his ideas😊 Also the water bottle that Till threw because he was apparently mad ...well that was all fake..Around this time Till would pretend there was something wrong with the microphone then pretend to get mad and would throw a wazer bottle if you were to check out other live performances you'd see him do the same thing. 🙂💕💕💕

    Again for Rammstein, the lyrics are simple but tricky.
    Background: Rammstein was often wrongly accused of being a right-wing band (Nazi band). This song is their answer.
    The chorus "Links 2 3 4" (left 2 3 4) comes from military marching. There is a command "Im Gleichschritt Marsch" (March in step) and every soldier starts with his left foot. To ensure all are in sync, the seargent (or who ever leads that formation) shouts "Links 2 3 4", one word for every step (at least a couple of times after started). So Rammstein choose a military phrase. Military in Germany is oftenly associated to right-wing kind of thinking.
    In the calm part of the lyrics, Till questions common German expressions related to hearts (e.g.: Can hearts break? Can a heart be out of stone?). And before the main chorus starts, Till sings "Sie wollen mein Herz am rechten Fleck, doch seh ich dann nach unten weg, dann schlägt es links." (They want my heart in the right place (normal meaning of "right place" is "correct place"), but when I look down it's beating left (second meaning of "heart beating left" is "left minded"/"open minded"). Then starts the military phrase. So they are playing with right-wing aestetics while making a left-wing statement.

    in Germany, it's a little different. Right-wing is rather radical in Germany and is associated with the Second World War, i.e. the Nazis. So if someone in Germany says you are right-wing, he means you are a Nazi. and Rammstein was often accused in the beginning that they were Nazis or right-wing. Therefore, the song. in the original music video is also the sign of the communists to see, although that was probably rather an exaggerated sign of Rammstein. They grew up in the communist GDR and have always been against the right and Nazis.

      @@Alecfisher01 Radical comes from the greek word "radix", meaning "root". Ovrall when you call something radical you simly say, that they see or do something from the "root" on.
      For example: a radical solution for something is, that you abolish the whole problem and build it up from the start.
      Or in regard of a radical stance in a political system: that you want a complete revamp of the system and not just some superficial fixes.
      This CAN be bad of course and also CAN be militant (= violent), but the word radical itself doesn't judge that - while it is of course often used that way.

    Why Flake always walks on the treadmill?
    Flake simply loves hiking. He once said in an interview that he is not happy unless he walks 10 km every day. In one of his books, he described how he was made to do it in his childhood. When he was on vacation with his family, his father always explored the surroundings by hiking. The excursions often went so long that in the evening in the hotel the kitchen had already closed.

    HI ITN !
    Flake said once that hes getting bored when he just has to stand around all the time so he prefers to walk on his treadmill during the concert to use his energy
    Rammstein once had been accused of standing politically extremely right - for ex. cause of Tills rolling "R"-enunciation... and this "Links 234" (left 234) playing on words was Tills and their answer to that accuse. And all of them grew up in the former GDR (extreme left dictatorship) so its clear that at least their cultural imprint is left ! All of Tills questions in that song are just his way as a real poet to build-up that song
    And I'm glad to have been at 2 Rammstein concerts! Its freakin hot at least in the front rows - but a massive experience - always again if I can get tickets !!!

    There are many proverbs in German concerning the heart. I'll try to explain the questions that Till asks in the song lyrics.
    -> Can hearts be broken?
    Someone has a broken heart when one' s love for someone else is not (no longer) reciprocated.
    -> Can hearts speak?
    When someone speaks from the heart, he expresses his feelings.
    -> Can hearts be tortured?
    I would speak of a tortured heart when someone cannot fulfill his desires. But here there are other meanings.
    -> Can hearts be stolen?
    If you stole someone's heart, then the other person fell in love with me.
    -> Can hearts sing?
    I don't know exactly. I guess it's about singing with emotion.
    -> Can a heart shatter?
    The same as "broken heart".
    -> Can hearts be pure?
    Someone with a pure heart has no bad intentions.
    -> Can a heart be made of stone?
    Someone with a stony heart does not show any feelings outwardly and appears cold and dismissive to others.
    -> Can you ask hearts?
    When you ask your heart, you are asking for a decision based on feeling, not facts.
    -> Can you carry a child under your heart?
    That's easy. Someone is pregnant.
    -> Can you give it/the heart away?
    When you give your heart to someone, you enter into a love relationship with that person.
    -> (Can you) think with your heart?
    Listen to your feelings instead of arguments or facts.

    "Links" litterary means "to the left", but it is also what officers use to yell when they excersise with their troops = start with the left leg! In other words, a doble meaning of the text, as so often with Rammsteins texts. Till Lindemann write all the texts, and he know to use the german language to the full, son as he is of two german authors.

    Such good play on words, much room for interpretation. Links, 2,3,4 is military march lingo, maybe as a criticism towards the left that it can become militaristic and uniformed too. "They want my heart at the right place" could mean the media wants to potrait us as right, or it could mean some fans want us to be right. But if i look down it beats left. Which could simply mean i consider my self left or even, since all hearts have more mass on the left side anatomy wise, that all humans are left by nature, if left means social.

But you got the idea right that Rammstein are politically oriented left. This song was made to let people know where they stand because the media tried to pin them in the political far right as in nazi/faschism side of things which they are defenitly not.

    Perfect how you got the political interpretation!
    Additionally I want to point out the German double meanings here again:
    "Sie wollen mein Herz am rechten Fleck " -> 1) They want me to be a good guy (If someone says to this to you, he cant think more positive of you) 2) They want me to be political right (Nazi)
    "Mein Herz schlägt links" -> 1) Biologically it is in the left side of your chest 2) I'm a leftee

    Best german band? - Regardless of genre and taste, the international success of "Kraftwerk", "Scorpions", "Alphaville", "Modern Talking", "Tokio Hotel" should of course also be mentioned, but in terms of overall complexity, Rammstein is already unique and unmatched. On the other hand, German-language music is mostly scorned abroad and there aren't really that many good bands here either.
    German film is even worse off. I don't even look at most of them as German. The exception is "Das Boot", the world's best war film of all time. Every now and then they land a hit like "Run Lola Run", "Knocking on Heaven's Door", "Rush" ...

When you vote a bit more right than CDU (what is conservative middle) you will have not many choices, and then you are "officially" called right what in Germany has the taste of Nazi. But in Europe and US are for sure more of them as in Germany. Didn´t want to write about politics, but i think it was careful enough to no annoy someone. Only wanted to explain the differences.
