He might be marginally better here than he was with Carolina, but he has flaws that transcend the talent (or lack thereof) around him. Only the most delusional Vikings homers think that he’ll light it up this season.

I'm cautiously optimistic considering Darnold has only started on awful teams so far in his career. He was an elite talent coming out of college and he's the age you'd expect a QB to come into his own. As long as he's not turning the football over multiple times a game, the Vikes will have a chance with a seemingly improved Flores defense.
Sam is a veteran. He was well liked in SF. Let JJ learn a bit from a veteran. That will help him.

There is no rush to start McCarthy. I won't mind if he starts QB3 to start the season. Not due to performance, but to keep him from being 1 play away from being inserted.

It’s amazing that the six-year veteran still has the higher ceiling than the rookie… If Sam stays healthy, he is far and away the better quarterback over JJ McCarthy. If you watch film of Sam Donald from college, to pro, and JJ McCarthy‘s last two years in Michigan, you can see that Sam Dan has always been more proficient in some of the little intricacies of the position, regarding touch, timing, anticipation, feel for the pocket,making off platform throws. JJ McCarthy has a lot of physical gifts, and is hyper athletic with a whip for an arm, but some of the things he struggles with, like anticipating windows opening, throwing the ball before the receiver, makes their breaks downfield, not trying to play hero ball… I think he needs some major development, even then as a Viking fan, his ceiling compared to Jordan love and Caleb Williams is being the third best quarterback in division… And no team has ever been consistent contenders with the third best quarterback in their division… Will be happy to watch him for a year, hopefully so, since Sam Donald can be reckless with the football and has injury concerns. But more likely than not, he will be playing.

@@Bigruss323 LOL. He’s already 2x better than jones. When you have a good season and you are a high-level talent, rather than a mid talent like jones, it tends to last. Someone already to argue with me that Love wouldn’t last, the only time a player has had season like that over the last 15 years and couldn’t duplicate it was Nick Foles. Chip Kelly aside, he’s a mid talent.
Hoping Darnold gets 17+ starts this year. Plays to his best caliber and gets PAID in the off-season. Let JJ fix any technique issues and learn from the bench.
I realize that this is the time of year where the media needs stories and topics so they nit pick everything but this is absolutely a non-story. Nothing to read from a rookie with less than 2 months into his tenure with the team not being the starter not even into training camp yet. This is exactly why coaches 'coach speak' all the time because news outlets make a story out of everything.

That is the smart move..he is 21 so there is no rush. Plus Michigan was mainly a running team and in the NFL to run the ball NFL defenses have to respect the quarterback’s ability to throw the ball in tight windows.

It’s very obvious that Simms has been converted, judging from the snappy shirt. He’s hesitant to make the statement publicly, but his shirt is a not so subliminal statement. We’re soon to have two-headed two-horned representation on this show. Within a couple of years the Football Nation will shift its eyes from the Chiefs to the Vikings. That’s just the way it’s going to be.

They brought Darnold in and are paying him $10M. Of course he's going to be the starter. It's a great situation to have McCarthy sitting for a year or two and learning.
