Cold steel is the only companies that is t afraid of making tactical defensive blades. I carry my Tanto Voyager XL a lot as a defensive blade along with a regular edc blade. It’s gonna be great to add this Luzon to the edc rotation.
You said it hoss. I carry CS Voyager XL Clip Point daily, unless I'm on school or county park property (ridiculous laws). I'm considering this Luzon merely due to an extra 0.5" of reach, and the lower price. Why carry 5.5", when you can carry 6"?
I have EDC'd my 6inch Luzon for over 4 months. In jeans, cargo pants, and shorts. I even carry it in my sweatpants when around the house. Completely unobtrusive. It is an absolute Savage, it's like a pocket katana. The only knife I like better is my Ti-Lite 6, because it's classier and just a fan of spear point blades. More stabby.
I've carried mine for a while and haven't had any problems with it opening in my pocket. I keep it in the front right, hard against the seam, so I don't know how it would open. I imagine you could crunch the liner lock if you put too much force into flipping it, but it opens smoothly and easily just off a finger pull or hooking on the back of the pocket so I don't know why you'd need to put in much force.
@Joshua Skolnick that problem is only for spring assisted switchblade Luzon is not spring assisted you need to open it manually until it locks but if you want faster you can just flick your wrist
I now have my Luzon Large for 4 month - and never had any problems with it, neither opening in my pocket nor a loose blade security lock. It is a great tool, fits in any Jeans pocket and fits like a glove in my big bassplayers hands. I need big knifes, beeing 6'4" a 3" blade would look like ridoculous on me. OK, I am used to Cold Steel's big folders. I am EDC'ing a Vaquero Grande for at least 30 years.
I got this about a week ago. I Love this knife, very solid, no side-to-side play, no rattling, everything on this knife is tight. I find it odd that yours rattles like that but should be no big deal. Got this knife very sharp out the box. MIght want to be careful with sheeple though if you pull this thing out in public, I'm never more than 5-10 min at a location anyway so I don't give a shit what sheeple think. I do use this knife for self-defense when I'm bike riding and half to roll through shady parts of town. Nut jobs here sometimes carry large kitchen knives so I have to carry something just as big, and easy to conceal and this knife is perfect. Canadian laws are STUPID!!! knife carried in a pocket like this is illegal, but its okay to carry a hunting knife on your belt!! BUT if you have a nice, expensive, knife, a crooked ass cop WILL take it and keep it without even charging you!!!
A friend of mine bought the Large Luzon. We were at his house and I brought my Cold Steel Counter Point XL with me. When we deployed our blades from our knives, the clack sound on his Large Luzon was louder than my Counter Point XL! I was impressed with his knife, which was less than half the cost of my knife.
I bought the 6" folding serrated Vaquero Grande from Cold Steel almost 30 years ago. I have EDCd it in my right pocket every day since. In March 2020 I bought the Rajah ll and EDC that in my left. I'm just over 50. For tape I use the multi tool on my belt. Never my knives. I can't tell you how many videos I've seen where a young child was viciously attacked by some dog and people could do nothing but run, wait for police to arrive, hide.... Or some meth head decided to hack people with some edged weapon for no reason and every one is defenseless and can only watch. I decided I won't be the guy who hides under a table. Hi Aaron I just received the Large Luzon today and it is awesome razor sharp and flips smoothly no issues with the point of the blade extending beyond the end of the scales or seating like the first production did which I returned once again thanks for the heads up :-)
@gideonstactical - I think they also use bearings in the pivot (or at least did when it first came out). A friend on Cold Steel FB forum tire his apart and showed pics of the bearings. For the price, both Luzons are an incredible value. You should check out the smaller one too. And then treat yourself to the XL Espada with 7.5” blade 🤣
To answer your question yes you do need a big knife in case some one attracts you the bigger the better .a small knife just will not get the job done .a big knife like what you have their will reach out their better .listen to Lynn Thompson videos on big knifes .
I've always had two or three in blades that is totally insane and I love it that is an awesome knife and I guarantee it's great for self-defense thank you for sharing this video I have to buy one
Even though Cold Steel has some knives that are kind of ridiculous if you search their lineup they've had and still have quite a few knives that are hard to beat when it comes to quality and price.
Last week i bought the Ti Lite6. I returned it, the closing its a real pain. Today i ordered this one. I can tell its easy to close. Edit after a few months: i improved the opening with a strip of self adhesive tape on the spine of the flipper and the locking with the same kind of tape. It stay on place very well.
I would suggest that the weak detent is done so the flipper can handle the weight of the long and heavy blade. If they used a stronger detent then deployment would require much more effort. Likely too much for practical use.
Also, LuvThemKnives here on youtube got the steel tested and shows the paperwork and the Rockwell Hardness on this heat treated 8cr13mov is 58.1 so that's good!!!
One area for EDC with a blade this size is... Running. I carry the Cold Steel Hold Out I in my shorts or sweat pants pocket when I go out running. I live part-time where I work, & I work in an area with A LOT of LOOSE or Stray dogs and they run in packs. Unfortunately, where I work, firearms are not an option, so for my runs an ASP baton is carried in one hand and a 6" folder is in the right front pocket. I figure if I ever had to use it, the extra length would give me a reach advantage over a shorter blade, and in the face of numerous dogs... That could make an injury saving, if not lifesaving, difference for me. Food for thought.
This knife is large indeed, but STILL not as large as the XL Espada! Of course, at $275 for the Espada XL G-10, and even MORE for the polished G-10, at almost 1\10 the price this is a SUPER option. At .5 inches longer than the Frenzy, but still cheaper, this knife fills a void.. and for the same price as a Case Texas Toothpick! Looks like the Cold Steel collection is going to grow a bit more...
Just ordered mine wanted one for aaaages but they're always out of stock. Such a cool blade shape flips as smooth as butter and the potential of a blade like this is insane

Hi, I'm from Russia, St. Petersburg to be exact. And I use Cold Steel Luzon for edc in town. Yeah, it's weird and people get scared and I really like it. :D
I really like this knife. My only complaint is that it's not left-handed friendly since the pocket clip can't be swapped. There are ways to work around that, but it's a minor flaw for me.
I can't leave home without my Voyager XL. I think this knife is far more beautiful, but suffers from the same major problem- the blade needs to be offset lower than the handle, and with no protrusions on the bottom so that it can be used for food prep. How about a "Bush Chef XL"?...8" folding butcher knife with a meat saw back and can opener for EDC?
Thx for the review this has become my go to channel for all things knife related. I have three knives coming on Monday. An Endura 4, Crooked River, and… THIS lol. I shalt forever cherish this elegant, understated homage to traditional Filipino weaponry 😂. Luzon is the northernmost and largest island of the Philippines. My dad is from Luzon, which is like me saying I’m from the eastern 38 states. For that reason alone, I had to have it. To be honest I wish they had made a more serious high quality blade and named it the “Luzon”, or better yet they could have named the Arc Angel balisong the Luzon. Instead I will have to settle for this ridiculous over the top badass monstrosity. Can’t wait
Who cares if people stare, really? I think its an amazing multiple purpose knife. Serves amazingly for a blade for defensive purposes i believe. I like Mr. Thompson’s thought process as to why they develop such large folders. I am a huge fan and will cont to enjoy lol Great video!
Been edc for 3 weeks, just been playing with it for now. I'm also shooting it out super fast like the ti lite to see if the liner will loosen after a while and allow up-and-down play
Yes I need one. My 5.5in Talwar is not even close to being too big. The 7.5 Espada might be getting into the too big category. I'll get one to find out
@GraySurvivorX A lot, weight is excellent nicely balanced. The addition of the blade lock on this long folder is an absolute. More than once the Voyager tip has tagged me lightly in the pocket. The feel of the Luzon handle is interestingly comfortable. When I first saw what was described as a Bamboo Style, didn't appeal to me at first. But when you get it in hand its a comfortable fit, compared to the Voyager. Also the slender shape and length of the Luzon make it a very effective thrusting blade at length, while maintaining excellent control / hold at the end of the handle. And Price, I originally paid $129.00 for my Voyager, compared to $65.00 for the Luzon Extra Long. Cheers.
Good review. I have one of each size and they are awesome. The 4” is cool and the 6” is a beast. The size difference is crazy. I actually just ordered a 2nd set because they were the last in stock that I could find and they don’t seem to be coming back. If you see one and you want it, buy it now! MAY be your last chance!
the clip was my only issue. I took in off , used my Dremel tool with barrel sanderr to remove the large bulge at the end of the clip that caused the problem . Now the knife comes out of my pocket without catching on the seem just as fast as the knife will open, much better !
In this day and age, with idiots burning down Buildings and car-jacking’s / murder all going up; you know the Crocodile Dundee Movie right? “That’s not a Knife - THIS…is a Knife” Well, this in a sense mimics the Movie. If someone pulls a knife on you, slide this out of your pocket. Most assailants are Bully’s…..and if they realize they may face serious Injury or death - trying to get your Wallet or Phone, odds are they will take off. I just purchased one for my everyday carry along with my pistol. If the proverbial hits the Fan - I intend to go down fighting all the way…
Another of your great review. I have been looking at this and the smaller one. The only thing I wondered about was the steel. I have not been real impressed with most of the 8cr knives. After watching your video, I think I will grab one (or more). This about the best review of this knife in actual use that I've seen. As far as need goes, as passed that point years ago (and a crap load of blades).
When I was working in healthcare (dialysis) we had a clinic on a very tough side of San Antonio, Tx. The night janitor carried something about that size but I think he may have actually needed the protection, or at least the intimidation factor. Unfortunately, These big Cold Steel folders like the XLarge Voyagers have suffered blade breaks. There are some shown on You Tube.
yep they do brake , hell every thing brakes if you apply enough force . I'll bet you would brake if enough force were applied , so what's tha prob bubba .
You're one of my favorite people on UA-cam on knives and flashlights yeah man I love that knife I love it I carry it everyday it's a great knife I got it for protection and it's razor sharp somebody will get hit in the throat with it and it's all over with thank you for sharing this video 👌👍🖐️😎🤠
I hate how everyone calls big knifes not practical. I carry a Talwar XL serrated or Rahah 2. I can wave deploy in sweat pants ffs. They are practical AND cool. Wimps. Not you, but the knife people in general.
I LOVE Cold Steel's XL Blades , I own most of them . You can buy the XL Voyages with either BD-1 or AUS10 steels for about $55 - $60, they're a great option if you want a better steel .
The four inch version is next and boy do I like this Bowie style blade ,it going in my vehicle glove box as a car EDC and when I get the 4" version it will be in my pocket as a EDC on my person ,it's just a cool cool smooth knife that is sharp as a razor.
i bought it and it is beautiful. i think cold steel is going to make a 6 inch version made from S35vn or even perhaps 3v. One small problem to be careful of folks when this sexy knife is in your pocket and its on the pocket clip (tip-up carry), the knife will rock in your pocket and those two flippers will open the blade slightly. When you are walking and your hands are swaying the point on this knife WILL CUT YOU. The cut will be on index finger nearest the thumb. Just make yourself a pocket holster out of something this knife deserves one take your time.
I love it and I'm glad you reviewed it. I was going to look at them when I go to Smoky Mountain Knife Works anyway. May not get the big one but I may get the smaller one
Got mine for $37 with free shipping. I can only compare this with the Ti lite 6 zytel version. The only thing I don't like about the luzon large is the hollow feel of the handle and I don't think the liner is steel at all. It just feels very light and lacks substance in terms of mass. The ti lite in comparison feels a lot more dense in the hand. I also doubt the lock on this will hold 200 lbs of pressure like the ti lite did in their tests. But, in terms of the practicality and functionality as a purely self defense knife, this is great.
That Secondary Lock is like the LAWKS on CRKT M16. Didn’t Cold Steel bash it on their Triad Lock vs Videos lol? Now they are using a similar one hahahaha
It is ironic. Still I'm glad they aren't too proud to come up with something similar. On a UA-cam interview with Lynn Thompson, he said they used the edge lock to hit the price point.
They are both secondary locks for a liner lock system....but mechanically they should be different. Cold Steel does not release a locking system unless it passes their testing so this one should be stronger than the Lawks
Lol! What does NEED have to do with WANT? Did I need those mongo 5.5” Espadas and Talwars I bought? Nope, but, I seriously wanted them, and that trumps all purchasing objections which may arise. As proof, I’ve ordered the 6” and the 4”. I feel much better, thank you.
I just wish I could baton with a folder. I have the Mykel Hawke (very large folder) with tanto tip and it will slice and dice, but no batoning. That's why I have so many knives! Thanks for showing it.
Cold steel sr1 baton away!!! Dutch bushcraft knives did a shootout with the sr1 and like 3 others and it one hands down and battonning was part of the test, and throwing also.
Yeah. @ 9:28 you can see whatever's sticking out is coming from the back of the knife, not the blade. Sure looked an awful lot like the blade tip. If you go to the time stamp you'll see what I'm referring to. @@gideonstactical
Well if you've ever had to carve up a BBQ chicken from Safeway etc. at a picnic site, this is the way to go if you don't want grease and meat pieces stuck in the pivot area. 6" is crazy for a pocket knife but just kitchen size if you think about it. I've used an Opinel 8 on chickens and it's just not not long enough to keep the joint away from the fat and skin and meat.
you said the tomb stud functions like a back stopper.. is it on yours? on mine it doesn't, there is good 0.03" gap in between studs and the frame on both sides. However the stopper exist, something inside holds the blade, the question how strong is it
Main Gideon, you ruined my day. I just unboxed my Voyager XL (with Tanto Blade), which has a 5.5 Inch blade, and now you make me face the question of whether or not I need a six inch blade, dag nabit.
Looks very cool, honestly not a fan on plastic pocket clips but I really like the design, I sure hope cold steel pays attention to this knife and upgrade some things on it
I love it! Its cool too that Lynn does eskrima/filipino martial arts. The only thing I've noticed is it scratches way too easy but its like 40$ so its not a big deal lol I actually have a kershaw that 8cr but they stonewashed it and it literally never has picked up a scratch with all the crazy crap i do with my knives do i wonder if that would've been good on the Luzon, i think it would've made it look even sicker haha
I hope that you will one day review the BOKER COLUSSUS folder. Its usually mispelled Colossus. It has a 4.75 inch blade and is on Blade HQ website for around $40. I have it and its a great knife!
I just picked up a CS tanto spike which I have no complaints about, just a tad too big for general edc. Used to have the mini tac kiridashi about 4 years ago and that was a sweet little blade.
Straight up pocket sword
You have to respect cold steel for just making whatever they feel like
Cold Steel knives are just crazy but somehow functional. I have quite a few of their blades and love each and every one of them.
Uh.... No I don’t.
Check out the Rajah ...I love it
Its reach will keep the attacker(s) at bay and inflict damage as well. Plus the psychological effect it has on them once you deploy.
Little tip: if the backup safety slide wobbles too much, you can tighten the two screws on it a little bit. Stabilizes the bar quite nicely.
I was like what screws?? Then looks at the lock 🤣🤣

That's not a pocket knife, " This is a pocket knife" Awesome review Aaron.
Been edc for 3 weeks, just been playing with it for now. I'm also shooting it out super fast like the ti lite to see if the liner will loosen after a while and allow up-and-down play
Perfect self defence knife and gives you piece of mind if you live in a shitty area
I ordered both the 4" and 6" yesterday. The 4" for an EDC. And the 6" for a fun holy shit EDC..🤣
I just got into knives and got a Ganzo... Then both of these, and I love them
Yes I need one. My 5.5in Talwar is not even close to being too big. The 7.5 Espada might be getting into the too big category. I'll get one to find out
Anyone dogging this knife out...... probably have never used one. Really is awesome.
for 40 bucks its a winner:-)
I secured one of these, and like it better than my Cold Steel Voyager. Highly recommend.
Cheers.
...For those times when hiking in the deep forest and having to fight off a 10ft tall aggressive BigFoot !
I've been waiting on this video. Thanks for showing the out the pocket way to open the knife. Great video.
“That’s not a Knife - THIS…is a Knife”
Well, this in a sense mimics the Movie. If someone pulls a knife on you, slide this out of your pocket. Most assailants are Bully’s…..and if they realize they may face serious
Injury or death - trying to get your Wallet or Phone, odds are they will take off.
They might break if some asshole goes batoning a cinder block with em. But they aren't going to break if you go burying it in someone's belly.
yep they do brake , hell every thing brakes if you apply enough force .
Yes if you are chopping wood with this knife put the secondary lock definitely. Know from experience
They are $30 on Amazon right now can’t wait to finally add this to the collection.
I LOVE Cold Steel's XL Blades , I own most of them . You can buy the XL Voyages with either BD-1 or AUS10 steels for about $55 - $60, they're a great option if you want a better steel .
Yeah boy got me an XL voyager and it's a boss. I'd love an Espada XL though.
Really like that blade with that clip point can't wait to get mine.
Man I’m only two seconds in and I’m pumped for this review!
looks like a great knife - got to have it for collection
Hey Aaron! Just 1 thing - it has steel bearings in brass cage instead of brass bushings
Best video of Luzon yet. 🤩👌👌
The 5.5 inch espada is not mongo considering the espada XL has a blade that is 7.5 inches
I love how cold steel sales are Amazon prices
I just wish I could baton with a folder. I have the Mykel Hawke (very large folder) with tanto tip and it will slice and dice, but no batoning. That's why I have so many knives! Thanks for showing it.
Cold steel sr1 baton away!!! Dutch bushcraft knives did a shootout with the sr1 and like 3 others and it one hands down and battonning was part of the test, and throwing also.
Three weeks ago “in the middle of October.” What time zone are you in?
This knife is awesome I'm buying one right now!
@9:36 it really looks as if the tip of the blade is sticking out of the bottom of the handle, when you turn it on it's side.
Well as you can see it is not, or I would have sliced my finger. The camera can be deceiving some times.
Yeah. @ 9:28 you can see whatever's sticking out is coming from the back of the knife, not the blade. Sure looked an awful lot like the blade tip. If you go to the time stamp you'll see what I'm referring to. @@gideonstactical
Bought 3 of these things. Such good value and fun for the money!
Carry this all the time, on duty and off.
I believe the pivot is on ball bearings not bushings.
I bought three. I love it!!!!
I edc a rajah 2, had to buy a good sturdy belt to keep my pants up but I love it.
Hello, my name is Doug and I am a Cold Steel addict.
I bought the (now discontinued) 6 in Holdout..THAT is a seriously LARGE folder...
It would be the element of surprise on an intruder coming up on you and you whip that thing out of your pocket 😂😂😂😂
We're back getting the itch for more knives love your videos yes this knife is the greatest❤
That's it, I'm getting one!
you said the tomb stud functions like a back stopper.. is it on yours? on mine it doesn't, there is good 0.03" gap in between studs and the frame on both sides.
Please review the new Mini Tac Bowie Cold Steel just released.
The Mini Tac Bowie is fantastic and a real steal ! Only chinese steel same like Luzon but I don't mind
I just picked up a CS tanto spike which I have no complaints about, just a tad too big for general edc. Used to have the mini tac kiridashi about 4 years ago and that was a sweet little blade.
