    We Aussie Finns can’t live without a sauna, I’m in Hervey Bay and use mine nearly every week. Never miss a week in winter and yes I jump in the pool. It’s so relaxing everyone should try it out.

    Weirdly, I really enjoyed the conversation between the two douchebags - almost more than the architecture itself! 😅 They always keep me coming back for more. Please keep them on your channel. Seriously, what a gem of a place and so glad we got to “ experience” it through you.

    Great video from our Art Sauna! You threw löyly (water onto kiuas) in sauna almost like the Finns! That means you have enough sisu. It was a pleasure to meet you. Thank you for your visit and welcome again. 💙

      That throwing water video footage is from your own UA-cam video as we didn’t have any. And it was genuinely going from cold to hot so the camera just fogs up immediately. Thanks again for the lovely experience. Hoping to repeat that experience with another group again another time. Kiitos paljon.

    I love the use of both concrete and timber being and despite being a sauna , it could be a residence or retail, very versatile usage, but what I also like the shape of the building almost gives it a momument feel to it but not no heavy like say Museum . Lol Andrew were waiting for you in jelly pit haha.

    Just this summer I read a book about Serlachius family. It was really interesting. When they set out to build the factory in the 19th century, there was no road or railway. What they had was the rapids that powered the machinery. So for a long time to get the products out, they had to use rowing boats and horse carriages. They produced wood pulp for paper production, so It meant a lot of rowing.

    Gorgeous place! I was born and raised in the Finnish lake region, a sauna by the lake is the most Finnish thing I can imagine. One thing, you're supposed to be completely naked in the sauna! 😉Traditionally the Finnish sauna culture is family-oriented, a bit like going to church, so everything is very innocent.

    • @Archimarathon
      @Archimarathon  Рік тому +1

      Yes. But the Art Sauna is a unisex “public” sauna so uimahousut it is.

    Another great video, guys! Might have to put Mänttä / Serlachius museum on our next Finland itinerary. Of course we do the sauna + lake combo every day anyway, when in Finland. ❤

    An amazing building! Seems to perfectly sit with the surrounding landscape and environment. And yes to all sauna related questions. My two favourite are my friend's cabin in Lapland, where we had to cut holes in the ice on the river to swim in after, and the one at his dad's house, which doubles as a storage shed, so we were sweating it out with a collection of garden tools.

    What a lovely place! And the wood looked extra beautiful in the rain. I love saunas in nature! I typically don't manage the full 15 minutes in the hottest ones because I heat up *fast* and don't want to faint, and then I chicken out of jumping in the lake except in summer, but I still love going. It is super relaxing and as it usually involves people of all ages lounging around naked, it's a body positive experience as well!

    • @Archimarathon

      I sometimes forget that it’s actually concrete. It’s so well made and finished, it feels like stone.

    Amazing! The building is definitely brilliant, and its relationship with nature is superb, but what I enjoyed most about the video is that you were really experiencing it.
    It was all about you getting in touch with uses or rituals, living the building, giving us (spectators) a sense of how is to savour it, a celebration of architecture

    • @Archimarathon
      @Archimarathon  Рік тому +1

      Yes it’s a bit hard to film with the camera going from cold to hot. Anyone showing videos of saunas are usually faked or cracked down in heat.

    Are you kidding me, this sauna was just featured in Betoni magazine (commonly known as the Finnish concrete lobbying mag) this week! Much rather enjoyed your immersive take on this public space and also the environment (and the lake... Thank god summer is on it's way... No ice/snow baths for me either.)
    I always like how you present the buildings rather as places, not things, always regarding the entire environment and it's effects on yourselves. Not forgetting the essential brief of cultural context of the space!
    Looking forward to your next feature! 🤩

    Sauna used to be the place in Finland where your life began and ended.
    In there people gave birth and when you died your body would have been washed there before the burial.

    I guess the Aussie version is sitting in a car with air con blasting, then getting out and running across burning hot sand and jumping in the ocean. If only we spent as much care and consideration designing our beach pavilions and amenities. People rave about the North Bondi amenities block, and it’s good, but there’s opportunities to be great.

  • @TheMikkis100

    Great video! This is a pretty weird building in my opinion, but good architecture nonetheless. Concrete is a pretty interesting choice for a sauna. We usually like to clad sauna buildings with wood even if they're made out of other materials like they've done with Löyly.

    • @Archimarathon
      @Archimarathon  Рік тому

      Löyly now they have put a portable glass sauna between the bar area and the sauna area. It’s also in an industrial area and walking into the sea which isn’t as amazing as the context of Mänttä area.
