As a Chrysler tec. when this carb came out on the 1971 340 I went to school to learn about it. Tony is right the choke pull off serves two duties on this carb. Acts as a choke pull off, adjusted by binding the tang with the slot in it and for controlling the secondary air valve, by bending the link. Contrary to what people think the quadrajet also has a vacuum break to keep the secondary air valve from flopping open. With both carbs you can wind up the spring to further limit how fast the valve opens after the vacuum drops to the point the vacuum break is no longer effective. In the 45 years in the business I probably rebuilt more of both of these types of carbs than most people have even seen. When I retired I was the only one in the shop that even knew how to rebuild a carb. let alone make it work properly.

I agree uncle Tony doing engine building or playing around with cars you can have 2 live times and still woundnt know everything.the know all's or people say can't do that only inspire me more.your a legend uncle Tony don't think otherwise.
Thanks for the videos!! These have been a huge help in understanding my 850 thermoquad that i recently did a rebuild on which I'll have to take apart again cause the throttle blades( I think ) are getting hung up somewhere when wide open. It took me hours of fiddling around trying to piece the secondary linkage back together my linkage on the carb and the linkage diagram from the rebuild kit were slightly different. I was planning on running the thermoquad on my 318 poly after watching you and lunar rebuilt his LA318.
I think there’s some confusion between the Thermo-quad and the old Carter AFB’s that had the weighted secondary air flaps? A long time ago you could either buy lighter or heavier air flaps or modify the flap you had. I’m guessing here because I’m not familiar with the Thermo-Quad. JD
i like your advice.i live in virginia about 2 hr bristol.i always lived the slant six. build a slant six from junk yard with supper six intake 318 carb. put 323 behind auto transmission. i raced a 318 only lost by half car length.the car bark tires pulling out without power breaking.i always wanted see what a slant six can really do. i have one now in 74 dart.you gave me a lot to start with.
100% agree with Uncle Tony. Its all in the air door drop and the pull off. I set mine tight against the air door stop with 1 1/2 on the air door spring. The hardest part of a TQ is finding a good on to work with. I will say SEAL ALL is the best I have used to seal the wells in the bottom of the bowl.
I have a good running TQ with no bog, and decided to try a restrictor in the vacuum line to the pull off. It picked up 2 mph in the quarter, and seems to be more responsive just cruising it. Took the push button from a ink pen, and took a hot needle and made a small hole in push button and stuck it in the vacuum hose.
Thanks for sharing. Don't think I fully understood that, good explaining imo, makes sense to me. I'm 42 & my 1st car was a '74 Challenger w/ 2 barrel low compression 360. I didn't know crap about cars or carbs, but I eventually swapped the wimpy 2 barrel for a good ole Thermoquad, & the difference in power/acceleration was night & day, so much better. Speaking of that car I need to work on it & get it running again. Thanks again for sharing, - take care from TN
Dont stop reading the comment most are here to support your channel and what you are helping do with the car culture by passin along information to people who might not know or the younger generation whos wanting to get in to cars.....plus i love how when people get under your akin about something you explain things the way my dad does when he gets irritated.....is there any of that you dont understand....none of it can you go over that one more time....cant wait to see you guys get bottle rocket dialed in...
The Thermoquad seems to be what the Quadrajet is to the GM guys, and the Autolite is to the Ford guys; a factory carb that works great from the factory, but can become a huge pain in the a** when used and abused but very beloved by their respective fans. I’m sure there’s a hundred and one ways to build a Thermoquad for drag racing, but I think a lot of us come here are more interested in fast daily drivers that may occasionally see some racing. Thank you Tony, for sharing your decades of experience and knowledge, and teaching us how to adjust and tune these things. Don’t let people get under your skin.
Thermoquads are the bag pipes of music, you love’em or hate’em. I’m a lover and had one on a few vehicles including my 68 Charger R/T almost 40yrs ago. I rebuilt and tuned them and they required minimal vacuum to operate the secondaries properly but of course they’re not always the best for every application. With the right breather set up though, such as a non silenced, the sound of those massive vacuum secondaries kicking in was like hearing a mother in-law screaming she was moving out.
I think there are two issues Uncle T; First, most may never have touched a carb in their life and second, I DID work on carbs in the day but almost exclusively GM's and generally when you see that item, instinctively you want to call it a "choke pull-off". Without seeing your video, if I were at a car show I may have thought that too. With this video, it is now crystal clear. Keep up the good work. BTW, I tell more people about your daily driver series than anything else all because it goes completely against conventional thinking. I've made my share of mistakes because of conventional thinking and I completely get what you are after. Thumbs way up.
I learned long ago to do my research, ask the mechanics who work with this stuff and others who had similar problems. Also thank the man for his time and experience. Then make your choice on your equipment and go on down the road. There are always those who accomplish nothing due to their inability to accept change.
Do a carb 'deep cut' or side b video on those damn Holley economizer carbs. Seen a few, never worked on one. Usually big CFM, I think those were an aftermarket replacement for a thermoquad or q jet.
Thermoquad is synonym of Thermopyles in the mechanical world of Uncle Tony. Few against many, facing each other brutally through a difficult and narrow way to maintain positions.
Cleaning out the exhaust heater plenum, under the carburetor betwixt the 2 cylinder heads helps to,but it means you have to take the intake off, thanks uncle Tony, like your videos.
Thank you so much for the video I've recently rebuild my 850 theromquad thinking i might try it on my 318 poly engine after watching you and lunar rebuild his 318, and was struggling to understand how the secondaries are setup. it took me a full day of trying and fitting and refittling and readjusting to get it to go back together i didn't quite understand how it operated just wanted to say thanks cuz now i understand after watching this and the previous videos it function how it works and its short comings it seems the thermoquad to me is not necessarily a performance carb but a work horse carb good for towing where theres no instant throttle response needed but a long heavy pull were torque is needed more than hp
LOL !!!! UTG, It is very likely, They are missing some parts on their carb, or.... The carb they have is from something else and may work, but is misundertood from what you are talking about, from what is in front of them, or.... They do not own the service/repair manual, or... They own a manual, and simply just haven't read it and studied it, word for word.. The manual is clear as day, for proper setup and tuning of a stock/OEM setup, in my opinion, when you can understand the basic stock setup, the after market, is a breeze to learn about... This was fun.. giving my 4 or 5 cents
I fulling understand how frustrating "know it all's" are, who leave comments over and over again.... Best off ignoring them... You can actually block them from your channel..
I dont like idiots wasting tonys time. Tony, stop frickin responding to the idiots in the comment section! Like if you feel you missed somethin then heck ya relearn us, but dont go over the same crap because a few jackasses dont get it.
Blocking somebody for having a differing opinion is for the shitty channels. If someone is being abusive, every other word is four letters, making completely useless comment, etc., that's one thing. But blocking to avoid differing opinions is the mark of a shitty channel. I hope Tony doesn't take your advice.
Someone should put a carb in a box marked as a holley EFI system and send it to him. I would enjoy the look on his face, right before he drove to your house and bopped you in the back of the head HAHA
you have my sympathies. another channel invokes Dunning Kruger effect. when I worked on cabs, I disliked the plastic based carbs because I thought them cheap. Your adjustments are what I was taught. The owner of the rental cabs had us wire the secondaries shut. saves gas...
I love the way you call out the neigh sayers!!! I'm glad there is someone on youtube that's been there, done that, got the T-shirt to prove it calling out the unintelligent whom think that because they went to a Automotive & Diesel School (Adult Daycare Centers) and barely graduated with their Master Sevice Technician ASE status, know more than you do when in reality you've been doing what you've done with the company's that you kept way before they where a twinkle in their grand daddy's then daddy's eye! I still can't believe we've been at the same tracks at the same time but never met, well I didn't run with the big dogs like you but I was there trying to get into that lifestyle then real life calls and pulled me back to reality to where I was supposed to be, back at Nellis AFB.
I love my TQ. Bought from carb rebuilder called Demonsizzler for normal street use on my '70 Chrysler. Took a couple days to adjust it and I haven't touched it in over 10 years. Best fuel mileage, fuel stays cooler, no heating up needed (start and go), never stalls,...but yes, once it a while, it does give me the "Thermobog" syndrome, but I know most new cars, even Kia's are now faster than old musclecars, so I don't drag race it.
Tony, You're the Rockstar of old school muscle cars and motorheads. You can polish rocks but you can't teach them to do tricks. I want to put a dual thermo quad setup on a hot small block Mopar just because it would be a good teaching tool. Any suggestions on what manifold ? Check you out tomorrow.

I had to watch this a second time. And Right now I have to explain to my wife why I just woke her up with a full blown belly laugh.🤣😂😆 I’m sorry I know it not supposed to be this funny. However it is to me.
The vacuum limiting your talking about sounds like what Nick on nicksgarage was explaining on tuning the Mopar 6 pack. He had a viewer send him an adjustable valve to put inline so it can be dialed in easily no matter what car it’s in. Pretty cool idea. There is no one size fits all answer for vacuum secondaries. Heavy car vs light car, stick vs auto, there’s too many variations to have just one setting.
Tony, where were you 40 years ago, when I actually had a TQ on a 340 with the world awash in Holley double pumpers? Those days are over for me but I still got a kick out of the video. Better late than never :)
Being knowledgeable is knowing when to identify and really listen to someone passionate that has experience. And knows what he is talking about. UT didn’t get any of this info in school. He learned it and earned it by a naturally inquisitive intelligence. And, I guarantee, by doing it the wrong way many times. Fine tuning his understanding of the subject over time. This knowledge is worth its weight in gold. When UT dies, it will be a Library of Alexandria’s worth of information lost. As happens with the death of many people. RIP. Dad.
A old drag racing tip from 1971. We would remove the vacuum diaphragm and use the spring on the air valve exclusively. I still run the same set-up today on my 340 Demon 1971 4speed. We also ran it on automatic cars in the 70s. Basically all mechanical but it disabled the choke operation. We don't use no stinking chokes on race cars! 😂
There might be a few that don’t listen to you but the majority of us do. The ones who don’t listen if they ever have a tq can learn the hard way. You have been doing this for years and learnt from all those mistakes. So most of us learn from you so we don’t have to. If I ever own a TQ I know this will help. Keep it up UT.
Thanks. I tried a Thermoquad on my 400 challenger years ago but little success. We called them Thermobogs. Now I know why, it was me! My buddies 74 360 Duster had one and it worked great. I'm a Holley 780 guy. That one I understood.

As Vice Grip Garage would say...… "somebody help me understand"
Lol that’s a awesome channel dude is hilarious
To tune a TQ...Bend this thingy, Tweak the tang a wee bitty and in the suck pipe put in a fitty to slow down the shitty. Makes perfect sense. Thanks again Tony..Love your work.
Love ya Uncle Tony! I was telling my stepdad about your channel... And how you remind me of him. Shoulda seen the smile on his face. 😆
he's just like an older buddy of mine decades ago, but he did Chevy's.
I enjoy each video you do. They are very helpful. I'm learning a lot. Thankyou!
You'll know you got your TQ set right when the full throttle moan makes the little hairs on the back of your neck stand up!
Much Appreciated Tony🙏
Give it to them Tony!
Thanks again for sharing, - take care from TN
some of the best uncle tony videos are made out of anger, and i love them lol
Dont stop reading the comment most are here to support your channel and what you are helping do with the car culture by passin along information to people who might not know or the younger generation whos wanting to get in to cars.....plus i love how when people get under your akin about something you explain things the way my dad does when he gets irritated.....is there any of that you dont understand....none of it can you go over that one more time....cant wait to see you guys get bottle rocket dialed in...
Uncle Tony don’t let the comments get to you, you make great videos and have the best channel on UA-cam. Keep up the good work.
I felt like I was getting yelled at by my high school shop teacher, and I don't even have a thermoquad 🤣
Awesome! Now show us how to correctly adjust the kickdown linkage on the 904
I think there are two issues Uncle T; First, most may never have touched a carb in their life and second, I DID work on carbs in the day but almost exclusively GM's and generally when you see that item, instinctively you want to call it a "choke pull-off".
Keep doing as you are. Some rocks always stay rocks.
I learned long ago to do my research, ask the mechanics who work with this stuff and others who had similar problems. Also thank the man for his time and experience. Then make your choice on your equipment and go on down the road. There are always those who accomplish nothing due to their inability to accept change.
This cannot be any simpler! Great stuff
Do a carb 'deep cut' or side b video on those damn Holley economizer carbs. Seen a few, never worked on one. Usually big CFM, I think those were an aftermarket replacement for a thermoquad or q jet.
love your channel uncle tony!!Don't ever change it!
A new video seven hours later? What a treat!
I love the hesitation and backfire in an old Quadrajet.
Can we get a burnout video of the blue roadrunner
Been my experience that you can’t convince armchair know it all’s...
No reason to even try.
I enjoyed this public service rant!
Lol instead of a psa he offers psr
Don't feed them Tony. If you feed them they'll never go away. Love the channel.....Keep it up brother.
LOL !!!! UTG, It is very likely,
They are missing some parts on their carb, or....
That would be censorship. Better off calling them out or ignoring them imo.
@@howiefeltersnatch2973 I wish UA-cam would think that way too.
You start blocking people UT loses money, and that's what a monetized UA-cam channel is all about.
I feel like I've been slapped in the back of the head.
same
e34Boat glad I'm not the only bavarian here.
I hate carburetors... ***smack*** ow
@@zarkeh3013 LMAO at that one.
Someone should put a carb in a box marked as a holley EFI system and send it to him. I would enjoy the look on his face, right before he drove to your house and bopped you in the back of the head HAHA
I had several Themoquad carburetors on various Mopars and every single one worked great.
yo uncle tony keep up the great work love your channel
you have my sympathies.
another channel invokes Dunning Kruger effect.
when I worked on cabs, I disliked the plastic based carbs
because I thought them cheap.
Great quick video👍!
I can’t wait to see how the Thermoquad does on my 318🤘
Neither can all of us hope to see that on the dyno soon
How is the car coming?? Just dyno it locally,it's totally understandable because of this virus thingy!
01trsmar The only engine Dyno in the areas still a month out he builds a lot of the engines for Lebanon Valley dirt track. And he’s over $600 a day just to put an engine on the Dyno
Just got back from the Bodega and found that while I was gone the cheering squad showed up and schooled you U.T. We got real fixes and everything as long as you don't mind hacking the crap out of something that needs no hack is so basic in design that my mother could tune it. Bravo... back to the bodega In need another 12 pack. :)
I understand it, and I've never messed with those carbs. Pretty simple explanation.
looks pretty straight forward to me don't pay attention to people like that as always great video keep them coming
What you need to do Tony is add more adjustment to blinker fluid rod that runs the thermo-adjuster, 3 turns in what I like to run.
I enjoy all of your vids, this one in particular! Goodstuff.
Always got to have a know it all. Whenever I went to dealership training classes there was always 1 in the class. Driving everyone crazy.
I had to watch this a second time. And Right now I have to explain to my wife why I just woke her up with a full blown belly laugh.🤣😂😆
I’m sorry I know it not supposed to be this funny.
I like the thermobog delete option.
RIP. Dad.
Tony, you are doing your JOB... Keep doing it.
I recently learned by watching you that the thermoquad makes killer cfm 800 850 ? Thats big
Great video Tony! Fact not fiction.
👍🏻good for you Tony! Keep em coming, love the videos!
The ppl talking about this carb in the comments probably don't even have a car
Sometimes you just can’t fix stupid. Appreciate you tony. I personally have learned a lot.
Thanks. I tried a Thermoquad on my 400 challenger years ago but little success. We called them Thermobogs. Now I know why, it was me! My buddies 74 360 Duster had one and it worked great. I'm a Holley 780 guy. That one I understood.
