The title is misleading : wolof has always been spoken by most citizens. But it is absolutely essential for the country to promote it and teach how to write it in its schools. But this idea of "taking over" french is just not factual. This is not the dynamic going on here: it is more about being proud of the national language than rejecting an other one.
I fully support this kind of effort. Use mother tongue as national language. However challenges are plentiful: it would be very costly to change the national language for use in government & internet

We often forget that languages never cease evolution Just like how Latin was succeeded by French and Spanish etc. and how Germanic the English language is. Wolof will evolve too but not without significant french influence

This is a pleasure to see. I like to follow the development of languages that have taken a bruising and have a good chance to recover. There's a big effort to spread Irish throughout their country. Paraguay recognizes and supports the need for their indigenous Guarani. In my own United States, efforts to rekindle Navajo, Cherokee and probably some other original is coming along -- hopefully before all of the old people are gone. European Jews learned from the Jews whose forebears have lived consistently in the Levant since before Roman times, and their efforts resulted in the complete revival and use of Hebrew as the bona-fide national language for seven million people. Nothing distinguishes us as human more than speech, and the garden of languages should be cultivated to preserve and develop not only the robust ones (which need no help), but the small ones that never sought to impose their ways on everyone else. Success in this effort always elicits a few tears in me, as does this video. Kudos.

The return to African languages is desirable and to be encouraged. We must however be careful to let the process be guided by scientists not rushed by politicians or left in inexperienced hands and risking promoting urban slang. I am from DRC and would be happy to read books written in Lingala with the same care as for those written in English or French, not the bastardized language spoken in the capital Kinshasa.
The best idea imo would be to keep French, teach Wolof, teach mother language and English. Seems like a lot but isn't really. French is already spoken by about 35-50% of the population. It would be a bad move to discard French. Wolof is spoken by 40% natively and 90% in total. So it only makes sense it be taught in schools. Those who don't speak Wolof natively should be to taught to read in their mother tongue as well, at least those that speak one of the 5 or 6 most spoken languages. A few years of English would help integrate Senegal more to the international trade community.

If your going to learn a foreign language, don't waste your time with a useless one. It should always be Indigenous + English. No developed country outside of Europe uses French as their primary language.
Majority of Senegalese can't read/write in Wolof orthography and use phonetic French-based spelling for texting. Books in Wolof are hard to find in Dakar, even dictionaries. Nonetheless, it is very hard to live in Dakar without knowing at least basic spoken Wolof. Standardisation of Wolof would greatly benefit adoption, and making it the language of education would greatly benefit skills and knowledge in the country. Most of Europe and Asia have entire education system in their native language, perhaps if African kids weren't suffocated with English or French as soon as they enter primary school they'd do better academically. They can still learn French or English as a foreign language.
I say all languages are valid. Promoting local languages will certainly help students succeed in schools, but that shouldn't discard more widely spoken languages, which are useful in the international scene. Nevertheless, Wolof is an interesting language that should be cherished.

All their media and history for the past 150 years has been written in French, modern Wolof is influenced by French, kids consume french media, all their neighboring countries speak French etc etc. English is nice but you can't just transplant it wherever, it would be incredibly expensive and futile to even try in a poor country
I never understand the obsession of being international from a pragmatic point of view. There are plenty of people who speak English and are still extremely poor. This kind of thing is feasible in countries with homogeneous ethnicities, less so in African countries with multiple ethnic groups (and therefore languages) in the same country.

If they truly try to incorporate all 20 codified languages, this will fail. Consider that language consolidation is the historical norm, and smaller languages naturally die out. It's natural. So the government needs to promote Wolof, which even 50 years ago (when I was learning French in high school) was the dominant indigenous language of Senegal. The smaller languages do not need to be suppressed; let people speak what they like. But the government's place should be to promote unity, and that means teaching Wolof as the first language, at least in those communities that want it. In non-Wolof communities, let them take care of themselves, or let them have the old books in French.
Hopefully the don't try to introduce too many localised languages too soon. It might prevent the students/pupils from having opportunities outside their local community.

South Africans already speak their local languages. Only 8% of the country speaks English and 10% speak Afrikaans. IsiZulu by itself has 24% of the population and more than 60% as a second language.
In the future most people will speak English. Like this french channel. Maybe second option Chinese or Spanish. But all other languages in the long future will slowly fade away.

Senegal is very poor and the education system is lacking. Teach young people English so that they have opportunity to do business, travel and gain wealth in their lives instead of spending time and money on the thousands tribal dialects that are around Africa or french which is also limited in use.

Majority of Senegalese can't read/write in Wolof orthography and use phonetic French-based spelling for texting. Books in Wolof are hard to find in Dakar, even dictionaries. Nonetheless, it is very hard to live in Dakar without knowing at least basic spoken Wolof. Standardisation of Wolof would greatly benefit adoption, and making it the language of education would greatly benefit skills and knowledge in the country. Most of Europe and Asia have entire education system in their native language, perhaps if African kids weren't suffocated with English or French as soon as they enter primary school they'd do better academically. They can still learn French or English as a foreign language.

I say all languages are valid. Promoting local languages will certainly help students succeed in schools, but that shouldn't discard more widely spoken languages, which are useful in the international scene. Nevertheless, Wolof is an interesting language that should be cherished.

@@alexskatit4188that's unrealistic when millions of Senegalese already speak, read and write French. All their media and history for the past 150 years has been written in French, modern Wolof is influenced by French, kids consume french media, all their neighboring countries speak French etc etc.
English is nice but you can't just transplant it wherever, it would be incredibly expensive and futile to even try in a poor country
I never understand the obsession of being international from a pragmatic point of view. There are plenty of people who speak English and are still extremely poor. Is it for immigration that promotes a brain drain? Is it isolationism when you don’t go oversees to add to another countries gdp? Don’t get it.

Good to hear. I support my fellow Africans in prioritizing native languages. I agree that education should be done only in local languages, with English being taught in a class like any other foreign language.
This kind of thing is feasible in countries with homogeneous ethnicities, less so in African countries with multiple ethnic groups (and therefore languages) in the same country.

If they truly try to incorporate all 20 codified languages, this will fail. Consider that language consolidation is the historical norm, and smaller languages naturally die out. It's natural. So the government needs to promote Wolof, which even 50 years ago (when I was learning French in high school) was the dominant indigenous language of Senegal. The smaller languages do not need to be suppressed; let people speak what they like. But the government's place should be to promote unity, and that means teaching Wolof as the first language, at least in those communities that want it. In non-Wolof communities, let them take care of themselves, or let them have the old books in French.

@@Hemalkukurkure no aryan weren't invaders but migratory. Harappan people were most probably dravidians who still exists in South India and Sri Lanka. There are around 300 million dravidians today. And indo aryan means aryan+indegenous people mixed together. Our language is mix of both but still more aryan but doesn't matter.

South Africans already speak their local languages. Only 8% of the country speaks English and 10% speak Afrikaans. IsiZulu by itself has 24% of the population and more than 60% as a second language.

Senegal is very poor and the education system is lacking.
Teach young people English so that they have opportunity to do business, travel and gain wealth in their lives instead of spending time and money on the thousands tribal dialects that are around Africa or french which is also limited in use.
