About the tipping, outside of America tips are considered a sign of gratitude towards servers or cooks if you enjoyed the service they provided. In your case the lady came 5 minutes before closing and probably acknowledged the inconvenience she might have brought with coming so late, so she decided to compensate you for this.
This. I find it rather rude when people actually get upset for not receiving a tip. Not everyone has money to spare for food plus tip and when they do tip someone it’s probably when they really appreciate the service or to show gratitude.
If I don’t have enough money to tip, then I don’t have enough money to eat out, simple as that. It’s cheaper for me to go buy my own food anyways. If you’re going out to eat, your mindset is not saving money, it’s laziness and wanting someone else to make food because you don’t feel like it despite it being cheaper to do so yourself. If you go out to eat with the mindset of saving money, you’re stupid. Either have enough to tip or don’t go out, simple. People need to be more independent. Make your own food or be nice enough to tip someone that makes it for you.

Buying takeout is cheaper in the sense that you could be doing other things during the time you'd be cooking your own food.

If your goal is saving money specifically, and that’s your reason for not tipping is to save money, you look stupid if you then turn around and spend more money on takeout than you do buying your own stuff. Saving time is not the same as saving money. If you have 10 minutes to go to a restaurant and order takeout, you have enough time to make your own food. Most people with the selfish mentality of not tipping aren’t usually hard at work at home. Again, they’re lazy and just don’t want to cook. Just because you don’t want to cook doesn’t mean you have some all important thing that’s preventing you from doing so.
I used to love when my old boss at the grocery would stand by the door the day before a holiday when we were closing early of course and turn people away. Customer "Oh can I come in just for a few minutes?", Boss "No, not for a second we closed 20 minutes ago." Get your stuff together people and manage your time and have a clue! He was my old boss but he got promoted and not fired, it's a big company that can afford hurt feelings.

Here’s a last minute customer story: worked in the fabric department at a craft store. Two ladies came in 10 minutes before closing and picked out 18 colors of tulle. If you know what tulle is, it puffs out as you unroll it. They wanted 10 yards of each color. That’s 180 yards! Almost 2 football fields in length! I had to call over my boss and get additional help. We had to keep our cool and service the customer. Needless to say we left late. 😂

When I worked at Walgreens, there was a lady who would come in maybe once or twice a month and do all of her grocery shopping in one go. We were open till midnight, and she'd always come in within the last 10 minutes that we were open. Since we couldn't ask her to hurry up or leave, we had to wait till she was done, and then she'd always have a TON of coupons. It was awful, not gonna lie. I wouldn't make it home till closer to 1 am on those nights.

I used to work at a Firehouse Subs and towards the end I was just the opener and sliced all the meat each morning for the day, veggies etc so that wasn't so bad. Closing was another story. So many times we'd have someone knock trying to get in 10-20-30 minutes after we had closed and if the owner was there, they would have us let them in and take their order. One night we had someone come in about 15 minutes after close and the owner was there and let them in and they ended up ordering 12 foot long sandwiches. They were all steamed (I had already cleaned the steamers for the night) and I had to reclean the toaster, reopen the half the line and then wash a few extra utensils. For more context, the steamers were cleaned and off so they had cooled down. We had to wait for them to reheat to use them, then wait for them to cool down to reclean them. That one order caused me to go home almost an hour late and I had to open the next morning. I told her if she ever did that again she would be finding someone else to do the work. It was also during a time when most places like that paid 7.25 an hour.
It’s illegal for a business owner to require you to work 12 or less hours after the end of your previous shift. I’d straight up say, “well legally, I hope you find another opener for tomorrow. Schedule says I’m off at a certain time, I’m off at that time, sucks to suck”
Boss sounded like a true b-word. Too many managers have zero respect for their employees time and effort- work hour boundaries should be hard and fast, but low-wage employees in that industry get treated like slave dogs.
I guess people tip for others as way to show how you feel thankfully for your effort. Like that person almost for sure understand that you was tired and wanted go home. Especially after ordering so much sandwichs. So its pretty nice of him doing that.
I worked in several Burger Kings when I was younger. If a customer knocked after closing, they were told,'Sorry, were closed. All it takes is if you let them in, other people walking past will think you're open and come in. A firm Sorry we're shut and listen to no pleas or sob stories.
My server at my PT was forced to stay several hours late after closing after denying a couple guys service 30mins past closing. It also didn't help their case they came in high. They were hanging out just outside the door and kicking the windows. He called the cops but they refused to show up. Thankfully, the restauraunts second server knows the chief of the nearby police station and had some stern words for his precinct not responding.
The tipping is basicly given for the service you need, with tbe amazing service you did to this guy, honestly, you REALLY deserved extra money for your dedication and the service you provided. Believe me, if you ended up bieng in a Subway i went to, i'd give you an amazing tip, since i've heard about the amazing stuff you did.
One time I ordered 4 Big Mac meals from McDonald's (for my friends and I to eat for an NFL game) but once I realized that the Big Mac meals were like $16 each at the window when the lady told me the total I just drove off! I hadn't been to McDonald's in around 5 years and I vividly remember Big Mac meals costing around $8 each. It was almost $70 for 4 "value" meals. The fact that they basically DOUBLED the price of their food in only 5 years almost made me lose it mentally. When I was a kid in the 90's the meals were like $3.50 but that was in the early 90's so the doubling of prices between then 2018 or whatever makes sense but to go from $8 to $16 in just a handful of years is batshit crazy.
When I used to work at Steak N Shake, at least once a week some drunk would come in at around 3/4am and would ask with his buddies what the most expensive thing on the menu is or what the biggest burger we had was. We had the 7x7 - 7 patties and 7 slices of cheese. And more than a few times, that didn't seem to excite the guys too much. So along comes one guy who alters the trajectory of my response for that question forever - he orders the 7x7, but adds 2 extra patties, 2 extra pieces of cheese, 9 layers of bacon, 3 eggs, puts it all on sourdough and adds two extra pieces of sourdough to keep it all together. A 7x7 already is typically a mess of a sandwich, with all of the grease and cheese causing it to kind of just slop over onto the plate more often than not, even with a knife or toothpick pushed through it. The bacon and the extra bread helped a little bit with the stability, since it ends up being more like 2 sandwiches stacked together in the end - but the eggs man... the eggs are even worse for the stability of the thing than everything else that normally comes on it. In the 4 years I worked there, I was able to sell around 50 of them. Most people aren't so far gone that they think they could handle it. Some people get it and share it with someone else. But every now and then there's someone so shitfaced that they think they really could down a few pounds of meat no questions asked. I got to the point where I could do a 7x7 myself, but I couldn't handle the fries that came with it or any of the extra shit I'd upsell other people on.
Bro a 7x7 sounds so good. I used to regularly get a 5 patty burger with cheese and bacon, large fries, and large shake from whataburger in my college days. I could absolutely take that meal. Well, I could have. These days I’m dieting. Probably for the best lol
10 mins before closing means kitchens already cleaned the flattop/fryers/grill/oven. always assume places close 30 mins before closing. or last orders is 30 mins before closing. had a lady asked for a medium-well / well done ribeye steak at 30 mins before closing and she wanted to dine in. she requested to sit in the rear section. she also ordered a sundae. there's a salad bar and she requested the bar be topped up. manager intervened and said she has to choose what she wants and the manager will personally bring out single person portions for her. she stayed till 45 mins after closing. manager and me got on the last train. i cleared her table and left it in the sink to soak for tomorrow's dishwasher. because of her, the manager and chef agreed to 86 any steaks 30 mins before closing. and we mop the rear section 40 min before closing so that the wet floor deters late comers requesting the rear section and yeah she didnt get a grilled steak. it was a pan seared then microwaved. asia doesnt have a tipping culture.
I'm quite sure that is not the intention of the store owner. You're supposed to start cleaning after the doors are locked. It's just that it can get so slow at night that staff, being eager to get home, make a wager to themselves that no one else will come.
Kind of disagree with you. If a store is open until 10pm, it's open until 10pm. Would I order dinner 5 minutes to closing time? Of course not. But grab a quick burger? Absolutely. If you starting cleaning before closing time, then 10pm is not your closing time.

i've been on the way back from some where you are with people or on a long road trip and theres like nothing open when you are hungry and need to eat something, so big W on your part for doing it , you didn't have to , but i'm sure you made some people really happy.

In practice, though, that almost never happens. Decent servers make pretty good money. If they work in fancier restaurants, they make REALLY good money. Lots of restaurants have tried to switch away from tipping... the staff either quits or demands a return to the tipping system. It's basically one of the most merit-based pay systems in existence.
Former chef here. Managers please don't let people in outside of the posted hours. We are not ready to serve them and it really makes our lives hell. Customers, don't show up to a restaurant 2 minutes to closing. Most of the clean up is done at this point and you make us do it all over again. Plus most equipment is likely turned off save for the dish machine. Good rule is if you can't be seated and order 20 minutes before close go somewhere else
As a fast food driver, the last customer of the night is the one you absolutely dread. At least 60-70% of the time its either: 1. Giant order 1 minute before closing 2. Other side of the city 3. Not even home when I get there, usually in a taxi coming from town 4. Drunk/asleep/not enough money 5. Prank order 6. Irate/problem customer for no apparent reason, seemingly unrelated to anything 7. Doesn't hear the door/bell/phone call and absolutely ....ABSOLUTELY NO TIP EVER. No matter how far, no matter how long, no matter how inconvenient, no matter how many times I have to call, knock, ring, wait....no tips, not even an indication one was ever going to be on the cards. We close at 11....so I absolutely despise 10:51-10:59pm with every fibre of my being
I used to work at a beach bar, we close at 11pm. I was covering up everything in plastic wrap and when I finally was ready, a group of like 20 teenagers came in and they all ordered a cocktail. My boss off course thought to make good money so we agreed to stay open until 12am.

But they were salads where you had to thin slice potatos and fry them, saute onions in a skillet and toss the fried potatos in, thinly sliced beef, and toss it all in ranch, then put it on the salad with cheese, and I made 2 of those, and 1 with a bunch of crap, just for them to not have enough money for it all lol

I worked in the food industry for about a year (dishwasher at a college cafeteria), and the pain of having to work overtime is real. Especially after Taco Tuesday (our busiest day without fail) and only two people washing dishes (including myself). I would never wish working several hours overtime on my worst enemy.
2:30 Yeah, pizza shops do have a good reason for no new orders at the last minute before closing. The ovens take a good while to heat up and, importantly for closing, to cool down. If they know how many orders they have left, they can shut down the ovens at just the right time to still finish up the last few orders and not have to waste too much time waiting for the ovens to cool. But if you come in late with a new order, then warming the ovens back up and then having to wait for them to cool back down can add a solid hour to how long it'll take them to properly close down even if your order only takes 10-15 minutes. I know a few people in different pizza shops, and they all implement a "last order" cutoff policy thirty minutes before closing.
Dude this happens to all of us, we close the gas station at 22:00, and despite turning the lights off, closing the gate and everything still people show up at 22:15-22:20 and ask for gas, snacks and tobacco when everything is already closed up and not available.

I was an ASM for SBUX many years ago. I was closing Christmas Eve and my manager scheduled a skeleton crew. I argued against this since holidays are unpredictable. Anyway, 15 minutes before close a BUS from a nearby church shows up with about 75 customers. Needless to say, we served them all and it took quite a while. I finally locked the doors 45-50 minutes after our normal closing.

probably won't see this, but never open after you close. it's a safety issue. You can get robbed. Also at that point you should of had your tills counted, so you were closed out for the day. We aren't allowed to take tips. Most places don't allow their employees to accept tips.
When I was working for a bakery/cafe chain there was this one time... I was opening the shop, the procedure for that is come at 6AM sharp, high-five the truck driver who just stopped unloading baskets filled with bread and cakes, turn on the oven to start baking the frozen minipizzas, start unpacking the baskets onto the shelves, the store opens at 7 At 6:15 an old lady walks inside (I usually didn't lock the door after coming in, because the shutters were clearly all down, no lights were turned on, and the opening hours were written on the door) looks around, meets my gaze, I was standing and staring at her, a basket filled to the brim with fresh loaves in my hands.... - Are you guys open? > N.. No, we open at 7 - But I seriously need eight fondants right now Ended up telling her that I can sell them only if she has the EXACT sum in cash, because I can't use the terminal or give change.... And she actually did So.... that's the story xD When it comes to tips, I got one twice in my career and both times I basically jumped with joy, thinking "I'm eating lunch today" XD
I work in healthcare and patients that require the most time are scheduled last so they do not delay other people's appointments. So I literally get patient's at the end who need extra time every single day.
I pulled a double after finding out my second couldn't make it in. Typically, I only do breakfast and lunch service. Theres only 2 of us in all day, I cook and he serves. I was told that its not usually busy, that was a total lie. The day was steady for a fish and chip place on a Saturday, so i had enough time to prep for the rest of service, and next day. Then 1hr before closing, I had a sudden rush. And not only did my board fill up, it was full of the items that take the longest to cook...salmon. Its not a big seller, so the restaurant keeps prepoetioned fillets frozen solid. 5 orders of those plus another 4 takeouts of all the other items, then another 2 more salmon 15mins later. I ran out of plates as the late rush killed (no plates ready for next morning), i still had the griddle to clean, fill the salad mise, take out the garbage, do a sweep and wipe down. Thankfully, no one came in after that rush. Only having 5mins before closing by the time the last customer was done didn't leave me much time to cook anything on the menu. And I still pulled an additional 1hr, post double shift, just to clean up. Then just yesterday, same restaurant. A crowd of 12 came in for breakfast. Then another 4 tables, and 2 takeouts, ordering everhthinf under the sun. What sucks about the breakfast and lunch seevice is that its all available to order, so I had both fish and eggs cooking off the same flatop. And an Uber rounded up the last on my board. I'm nearing the end of the 12 cover ticket when the Uber druver came for the pickup...this was barely a 5min window. And he was obnoxiously hastling me for his order. Like, dude i known it's 1 item, but my board is full. And all I get is this broken Hindu english response of "when, when, when, now, when." I wanted to yell at him, but i had a near capacity dining room. My server told him to take a seat and don't rush us. So fak it, i did his order last, despite it would take the fastest to do. Because 1. It was the last ticket i got. And 2. He was pestering me.

The crazy part wasn't that they ran out of bread at 6pm, it was that Brock Lesnar was there waiting in line. He overheard the Subway worker tell another customer that all they had left was round bread, so he left. A few kids followed him out the door to get his autograph. Btw this happened in rural Minnesota.
In italy tips aint mandatory like the us where i heard you need tips but you use tips as a sign of gratitude towards a good waiter. For example one evening we went to dinner in this restaurant and there was this young guy who served us. He took his time to look at the things we ordered come back and ask if some ingredients were ok anyways cuz some were spicy and it’s not really common in those dishes, then he just served us fast and clean. We had to give some tips cuz he was so good at his job
Whenever someone order a ton of items from the menu, I always just assume that it’s probably a group or family meal… But if it was for one person, that’s when I’ll be scared
I currently work in fast food, and there was one time a couple weeks ago where this lady managed to come inside just barely before we locked the doors as it was literally one minute before we closed, and she asked if we could let the rest of them come in and that there was only a few of them, and the owner who works with us on the night shift (very nice guy) said sure why not, and let them in, the lady lied to him and like 25 people came in and none of us besides the owner were happy, then again the owner is old and has a business perspective on things so to him, it was good business, but the rest of us were peeved, now thankfully they were in and out quickly and didn't leave a mess so it wasn't THAT bad, but still very annoying

The pizza place that was closing soon can still be your favorite, no problem. Because they were right to deny service since there's no way they could have made you a pizza in 10 minutes. I don't know how people keep making a mistake over what seems like such a simple concept. Closing Time: 9:30 means "Operations shut down, the door locks, and everyone out by 9:30" it doesn't mean "Get in by 9:29 and then conduct business as normal for however long it takes".
The exact same thing happened to me at my Subway I used to work at. Pretty sure I've even had some last minute customers during summer order 14 sandwiches.
Cool story I used to work at a pizzeria that was inside a mall. We didn't have a front or back door, just a gate that we would raise and lower just to sneak in and out to like take out the trash or something. We had several people crouch or pretty much crawl under it before / after opening hours just to tell they want to order a bunch of items. Or knock on the gate like "HELLO ANYONE THERE? SERVICE PLEASE?" Dude, we're not open can you not tell?
I was working in a restaurant and we were cleaning everything, we had already turned off the oven and fryer and as soon as someone from the service came by I said that we were not going to make anything anymore, but when someone from the service finally came, she said told me that in 15 minutes 8 people would come to eat and we were really angry because we had already cleaned up and were about to leave.
I had an experience recently with a customer wanting to come in after closing. I work at a grocery store and I had to stay late to help deal with an issue about refrigeration in the store failing and getting someone in to repair it. I was waiting on the repair guy to arrive and was pulling product from parts of the store that were not keeping temp. Repair guy shows up the same time a customer arrives wanting to be let in to buy a bottle of alcohol an hour after the store had closed(and also clearly intoxicated so I wouldn't have sold it even if we were open).
I work part time as a taxi driver. When its a busy night and half an hour when youre supposed to finish work and you think, ok. One last customer from the party you can pick up... And this guy wants to go 40 km... Thats when you know itll take you one hour more to finish. ^^
I mean it all depends on the situation. In your case, it was your parents subway restaurant so every sanwich sold is good for the family which is an encouragement on it's own. Depending on the kind of meal you are making, like imagine someone comes in last minute and orders like 20 packs of fries heck yes I am gonna turn up the fryer again that was already cooling down, for one pack of fries? not so much. Like if I am gonna do overtime it has to pay off which is more likely the case with a big order.
Didn't really have that with closing necessarily when I worked for Jimmy Johns. I did always seem to magically get orders I had to deliver right at or around closing. Like..seriously. It's night so often times I can't see anything and even if I get tipped its usually like little to nothing. Honestly the biggest tip I got was 50 bucks. One guy I worked with got 100 on like a 20 order. Unfornately for the store I worked at if you tip in shop the tip gets split among the in shop workers working that certain amount of time/hour and we weren't supposed to have a tip jar, but my boss wanted it. Drivers kept all the tips made on deliveries, but we got a lower min wage as result. Basically I learned you need to always tip delivery drivers since most of the time that's there pay per hour sadly and no driver's reimbursements does not count as a tip nor does it go back to the driver...least my store it didn't/
A patient walks in at 1600 (4:00 PM) on a Friday needing paperwork filled out because he is moving out of the state the next morning. It take 90 minutes to complete this paperwork. And he knew this for the past 6 months, but chose to put it off. I sent my staff home, called my wife to say I would be late, and completed the paperwork. No thank you, no tip, no apology. Plus I get no overtime despite being hourly pay. Don't work for Dept of Defense healthcare. They're not kind to their civilian employees.

Was a kitchen manager for a short period at a breakfast restaurant called Jimmy's Egg. They serve breakfast and lunch and close at 2. One day we had, had an extremely slow day. By 1:50 I had everything shut down and ready to clock out at 2, which was earlier than the usual 2:30-3. 1:55 we get a call, main manager answers, it was someone ordering food, she decided to take it. IT WAS $150 WORTH OF FOOD! Long story short I clocked out at 3:15 that day
Oddest tipping experience I had was when I worked part time at Best Buy, some old grandpa dude wanted to tip me because I was really helpful to him and taught him a few basic things about computers. It was a slow day, I didn't care, it was fun.
Worked in a tool store. In the winter time it is dark until nearly 9 AM. We have only the front door open for employees to enter, but the showroom is dark,,, and I mean, you could justify a flashlight dark. We employees get there at 8, and we open at 8:30. The lights do not go on, until about 5 minutes to 8:30. Well one day I get to work,, I punch in about 7:55,,, I talk to a coworker for a few minutes,, literally about 2 minutes... then go to the showroom (still dark)... I'm setting up my area when I hear a noise... seeing as others do not show up until 8:30 I'm confused. I then see it... A customer shopping in the dark. I couldn't believe it. When I got their attention and explained that we do not open for another 30 minutes their response... well the door was open. I then said,,, but there are not lights on... They shrugged their shoulders and just kept shopping... I had no idea what to say or think anymore.
An 8 hour shift making sandwiches, can be a grueling day. Standing in one spot all day isn’t good for anyone. Not to mention looking down half the time, and dealing with certain people isn’t easy. When I worked at a food counter, I was lucky to be able to run to the restroom for 3 minutes, in an 8 hour shift. No breaks were given. In Wisconsin, it is not required to give adults any break during the day. Labor laws are really backward in this state, but I told myself, it’s still better than living in North Korea. Found a different job within 4 months.
Ending your noon shift at HomeDepot, and a customer comes up and asks to buy 10 wooden fences. And each fence they inspect and do not like, you have to put it to the side and go get another new one. Knowing that even once the customer has their 10 good fences, you’re gonna have to put back all of the ones they didn’t want to buy. And I’m taking about those giant prebuilt segments of wooden fences.
I once forgot a cornbread in the oven during closing. went in The next day and the manager (owners son) asked "what happened to the cornbread? I say "it's in the cooler" he then showed me the black cornbread says you could've burned the store down. I didn't get fired though 😅😅😅
In my younger years I worked at a reputable steak house. To anyone reading this I warn you…..unless it’s obvious they are still serving people do not enter a restaurant near closing hours, especially after closing hours. The kitchen staff is packing up and cleaning so they can go home. I saw people get fed food thrown in the garbage after breaking down the line. The restaurant had a charcoal grill so steak cooks breathe that smoke in all night. I saw one steak cook reach back as far as he could and get out a loogie that had to be from the belly of the beast. That loogie was spit on top of a steak and cooked in. Do yourself a favour and get to a restaurant before they are winding down for the night. It’s not just showing courtesy to the employees, it’s ensuring you get food that isn’t gross.
i mean you cant compare Subway and Pizza Place. you can make a sandwich in less than 10 minutes, but it takes longer to cook a pizza. thats why you guys should go to restaurants or fast food places an 1 hour or 1 1/2 hour before closing.
When I was a university student back in 2011, I depended on tips. My Mother covered only my housing expenses, and all other costs were met through the income I earned from working in retail/fast food. That taught me a valuable lesson in earning income. Rightfully so. You may not understand tipping culture as your parents probably coddled you. The harsh reality is that many fast-food workers struggle with financial challenges. Your statement is insensitive, as not everyone has the same level of privilege. You mentioned that your parents even own a Subway store or two, highlighting a level of financial stability that not all individuals enjoy. Think twice next time.

yeah and they get mad that we give them the cold fries and warm burgers. We are closing in a few moments. For people who don't understand. We stop cooking at a certain point. The last 30 minutes or so nothing is made unless we still have a line. So the food is still usually good, just not fresh. And a lot of places do start shutting down equipment to clean before they close. So yeah you aren't getting a burger cooked fresh. Some places are just ridiculous, they can drop fries, the fryer is still on, or chicken if it is put in a fryer. Popeye's though the chicken takes 15 to 20 minutes, cook and prep time. The fryers are filtered/cleaned and usually shut down around that time or earlier. So if you go some place and they are less than thirty minutes to closing, they may not mind a small order, but yeah that feeding the whole hood, is ridiculous.
That isn't really "Tipping Culture". Tipping Culture is where companies put obligatory tips onto their products/services and drop employee wages to accomodate for those. What these customers were doing is just sharing some love to you for you going out of your way to help them.
just about a week ago we was closing up at Taco Johns at 11 pm and a customer comes in drive thru and orders $90.00 worth of food at 5 till close. Trust me that will always happen. Ive been in the restaurant industry for over 25 years and yes it does get old. We do need food
Yeah, I'm one of those late to order customers (not by choice), usually the places I order from are upen until 22:00 and I finish shift at 21:45 and I order then, I would order earlier but you literally can't preorder for 22:00, only 21:30 which you know... 15 minutes earlier than I finish work. I always get the stuff done which I really appreciate, but I would surely not go into the restaurant to tell them I'm the one ordering at that time XD There was literally an order I made last week, I ordered gyros like written above and I was like: It's fast to make, 15 mins before closing time, hopefully they won't be cursing me. Then the delivery man arrived and was like: "Yeah, yours was your last order and they were pretty much closing in." I was just laughing emberrased while taking the prepayed food. Then noticed they even put a free cheese cake with strawberry on top of it with the order. I was just thinking like: Did the delivery man accidentally put it into my order and is going to call me? (didn't call me 30 mins later when I finished the food so I ate the cake), but I was also thinking the restaurant might had it leftover and just threw it into my order for some reason. It was a really good cake, so I'm just confused wtf happened lol
Some restaurants will give away free food during closing because otherwise the food is to be discarded, since they can’t sell day old food the next day. Sometimes this also happens at donut or cookie shops. If you go right before closing time, they will let you take extra baked sweets for free just to get rid of as much of the product as possible so it’s not going to waste.

About the tipping, outside of America tips are considered a sign of gratitude towards servers or cooks if you enjoyed the service they provided. In your case the lady came 5 minutes before closing and probably acknowledged the inconvenience she might have brought with coming so late, so she decided to compensate you for this.

Not everyone has money to spare for food plus tip and when they do tip someone it’s probably when they really appreciate the service or to show gratitude.
If I don’t have enough money to tip, then I don’t have enough money to eat out, simple as that. It’s cheaper for me to go buy my own food anyways. If you’re going out to eat, your mindset is not saving money, it’s laziness and wanting someone else to make food because you don’t feel like it despite it being cheaper to do so yourself. If you go out to eat with the mindset of saving money, you’re stupid. Either have enough to tip or don’t go out, simple. People need to be more independent. Make your own food or be nice enough to tip someone that makes it for you.

Buying takeout is cheaper in the sense that you could be doing other things during the time you'd be cooking your own food.

I used to love when my old boss at the grocery would stand by the door the day before a holiday when we were closing early of course and turn people away. Customer "Oh can I come in just for a few minutes?", Boss "No, not for a second we closed 20 minutes ago." Get your stuff together people and manage your time and have a clue! He was my old boss but he got promoted and not fired, it's a big company that can afford hurt feelings.

Here’s a last minute customer story: worked in the fabric department at a craft store. Two ladies came in 10 minutes before closing and picked out 18 colors of tulle. If you know what tulle is, it puffs out as you unroll it. They wanted 10 yards of each color. That’s 180 yards! Almost 2 football fields in length! I had to call over my boss and get additional help. We had to keep our cool and service the customer. Needless to say we left late. 😂

When I worked at Walgreens, there was a lady who would come in maybe once or twice a month and do all of her grocery shopping in one go. We were open till midnight, and she'd always come in within the last 10 minutes that we were open. Since we couldn't ask her to hurry up or leave, we had to wait till she was done, and then she'd always have a TON of coupons. It was awful, not gonna lie. I wouldn't make it home till closer to 1 am on those nights.

I used to work at a Firehouse Subs and towards the end I was just the opener and sliced all the meat each morning for the day, veggies etc so that wasn't so bad. Closing was another story. So many times we'd have someone knock trying to get in 10-20-30 minutes after we had closed and if the owner was there, they would have us let them in and take their order. One night we had someone come in about 15 minutes after close and the owner was there and let them in and they ended up ordering 12 foot long sandwiches. They were all steamed (I had already cleaned the steamers for the night) and I had to reclean the toaster, reopen the half the line and then wash a few extra utensils. For more context, the steamers were cleaned and off so they had cooled down. We had to wait for them to reheat to use them, then wait for them to cool down to reclean them. That one order caused me to go home almost an hour late and I had to open the next morning.
I told her if she ever did that again she would be finding someone else to do the work. It was also during a time when most places like that paid 7.25 an hour.
It’s illegal for a business owner to require you to work 12 or less hours after the end of your previous shift. I’d straight up say, “well legally, I hope you find another opener for tomorrow. Schedule says I’m off at a certain time, I’m off at that time, sucks to suck”

I worked in several Burger Kings when I was younger. If a customer knocked after closing, they were told,'Sorry, were closed. All it takes is if you let them in, other people walking past will think you're open and come in. A firm Sorry we're shut and listen to no pleas or sob stories.

My server at my PT was forced to stay several hours late after closing after denying a couple guys service 30mins past closing. It also didn't help their case they came in high. They were hanging out just outside the door and kicking the windows. He called the cops but they refused to show up. Thankfully, the restauraunts second server knows the chief of the nearby police station and had some stern words for his precinct not responding.

One time I ordered 4 Big Mac meals from McDonald's (for my friends and I to eat for an NFL game) but once I realized that the Big Mac meals were like $16 each at the window when the lady told me the total I just drove off! I hadn't been to McDonald's in around 5 years and I vividly remember Big Mac meals costing around $8 each. It was almost $70 for 4 "value" meals. The fact that they basically DOUBLED the price of their food in only 5 years almost made me lose it mentally.
When I was a kid in the 90's the meals were like $3.50 but that was in the early 90's so the doubling of prices between then 2018 or whatever makes sense but to go from $8 to $16 in just a handful of years is batshit crazy.
When I used to work at Steak N Shake, at least once a week some drunk would come in at around 3/4am and would ask with his buddies what the most expensive thing on the menu is or what the biggest burger we had was. We had the 7x7 - 7 patties and 7 slices of cheese. And more than a few times, that didn't seem to excite the guys too much. So along comes one guy who alters the trajectory of my response for that question forever - he orders the 7x7, but adds 2 extra patties, 2 extra pieces of cheese, 9 layers of bacon, 3 eggs, puts it all on sourdough and adds two extra pieces of sourdough to keep it all together. A 7x7 already is typically a mess of a sandwich, with all of the grease and cheese causing it to kind of just slop over onto the plate more often than not, even with a knife or toothpick pushed through it. The bacon and the extra bread helped a little bit with the stability, since it ends up being more like 2 sandwiches stacked together in the end - but the eggs man... the eggs are even worse for the stability of the thing than everything else that normally comes on it.
In the 4 years I worked there, I was able to sell around 50 of them. Most people aren't so far gone that they think they could handle it. Some people get it and share it with someone else. But every now and then there's someone so shitfaced that they think they really could down a few pounds of meat no questions asked. I got to the point where I could do a 7x7 myself, but I couldn't handle the fries that came with it or any of the extra shit I'd upsell other people on.
Bro a 7x7 sounds so good. I used to regularly get a 5 patty burger with cheese and bacon, large fries, and large shake from whataburger in my college days. I could absolutely take that meal. Well, I could have. These days I’m dieting. Probably for the best lol

she stayed till 45 mins after closing. manager and me got on the last train.
i cleared her table and left it in the sink to soak for tomorrow's dishwasher.
because of her, the manager and chef agreed to 86 any steaks 30 mins before closing.
and we mop the rear section 40 min before closing so that the wet floor deters late comers requesting the rear section

I'm quite sure that is not the intention of the store owner. You're supposed to start cleaning after the doors are locked. It's just that it can get so slow at night that staff, being eager to get home, make a wager to themselves that no one else will come.
Kind of disagree with you. If a store is open until 10pm, it's open until 10pm. Would I order dinner 5 minutes to closing time? Of course not. But grab a quick burger? Absolutely. If you starting cleaning before closing time, then 10pm is not your closing time.

In practice, though, that almost never happens. Decent servers make pretty good money. If they work in fancier restaurants, they make REALLY good money. Lots of restaurants have tried to switch away from tipping... the staff either quits or demands a return to the tipping system.
It's basically one of the most merit-based pay systems in existence.

Former chef here. Managers please don't let people in outside of the posted hours. We are not ready to serve them and it really makes our lives hell. Customers, don't show up to a restaurant 2 minutes to closing. Most of the clean up is done at this point and you make us do it all over again. Plus most equipment is likely turned off save for the dish machine. Good rule is if you can't be seated and order 20 minutes before close go somewhere else
As a fast food driver, the last customer of the night is the one you absolutely dread.
At least 60-70% of the time its either:
1. Giant order 1 minute before closing
2. Other side of the city
3. Not even home when I get there, usually in a taxi coming from town
4. Drunk/asleep/not enough money
5. Prank order
6. Irate/problem customer for no apparent reason, seemingly unrelated to anything
7. Doesn't hear the door/bell/phone call
and absolutely ....ABSOLUTELY NO TIP EVER.

I am actually crying watching whoever is making the food in this video that is entirely too much purple stuff (onions?) that he's putting on that food, its like half the entire sandwich or whatever he's putting them on.
I worked in the food industry for about a year (dishwasher at a college cafeteria), and the pain of having to work overtime is real. Especially after Taco Tuesday (our busiest day without fail) and only two people washing dishes (including myself). I would never wish working several hours overtime on my worst enemy.
2:30 Yeah, pizza shops do have a good reason for no new orders at the last minute before closing. The ovens take a good while to heat up and, importantly for closing, to cool down. If they know how many orders they have left, they can shut down the ovens at just the right time to still finish up the last few orders and not have to waste too much time waiting for the ovens to cool. But if you come in late with a new order, then warming the ovens back up and then having to wait for them to cool back down can add a solid hour to how long it'll take them to properly close down even if your order only takes 10-15 minutes. I know a few people in different pizza shops, and they all implement a "last order" cutoff policy thirty minutes before closing.

I was an ASM for SBUX many years ago. I was closing Christmas Eve and my manager scheduled a skeleton crew. I argued against this since holidays are unpredictable. Anyway, 15 minutes before close a BUS from a nearby church shows up with about 75 customers. Needless to say, we served them all and it took quite a while. I finally locked the doors 45-50 minutes after our normal closing.

probably won't see this, but never open after you close. it's a safety issue. You can get robbed. Also at that point you should of had your tills counted, so you were closed out for the day. We aren't allowed to take tips. Most places don't allow their employees to accept tips.

I was opening the shop, the procedure for that is come at 6AM sharp, high-five the truck driver who just stopped unloading baskets filled with bread and cakes, turn on the oven to start baking the frozen minipizzas, start unpacking the baskets onto the shelves, the store opens at 7

When it comes to tips, I got one twice in my career and both times I basically jumped with joy, thinking "I'm eating lunch today" XD
I work in healthcare and patients that require the most time are scheduled last so they do not delay other people's appointments. So I literally get patient's at the end who need extra time every single day.
I pulled a double after finding out my second couldn't make it in. Typically, I only do breakfast and lunch service. Theres only 2 of us in all day, I cook and he serves. I was told that its not usually busy, that was a total lie. The day was steady for a fish and chip place on a Saturday, so i had enough time to prep for the rest of service, and next day. Then 1hr before closing, I had a sudden rush. And not only did my board fill up, it was full of the items that take the longest to cook...salmon. Its not a big seller, so the restaurant keeps prepoetioned fillets frozen solid. 5 orders of those plus another 4 takeouts of all the other items, then another 2 more salmon 15mins later. I ran out of plates as the late rush killed (no plates ready for next morning), i still had the griddle to clean, fill the salad mise, take out the garbage, do a sweep and wipe down. Thankfully, no one came in after that rush. Only having 5mins before closing by the time the last customer was done didn't leave me much time to cook anything on the menu. And I still pulled an additional 1hr, post double shift, just to clean up.
Then just yesterday, same restaurant. A crowd of 12 came in for breakfast. Then another 4 tables, and 2 takeouts, ordering everhthinf under the sun. What sucks about the breakfast and lunch seevice is that its all available to order, so I had both fish and eggs cooking off the same flatop. And an Uber rounded up the last on my board. I'm nearing the end of the 12 cover ticket when the Uber druver came for the pickup...this was barely a 5min window. And he was obnoxiously hastling me for his order. Like, dude i known it's 1 item, but my board is full. And all I get is this broken Hindu english response of "when, when, when, now, when." I wanted to yell at him, but i had a near capacity dining room. My server told him to take a seat and don't rush us. So fak it, i did his order last, despite it would take the fastest to do. Because 1. It was the last ticket i got. And 2. He was pestering me.
I work in a cafe, I get this all the time as well, but I’m not as nice. Once we’re closed, we’re closed and there’s nothing you’re gonna say to me to change my mind. I don’t care if your kids are sat in the car and they’re hungry…that’s your problem not mine

One time I went to Subway and they were out of bread. This was at 6pm lol. They still had the round bread though, so that's what I got (anyone remember round bread?!). The crazy part wasn't that they ran out of bread at 6pm, it was that Brock Lesnar was there waiting in line. He overheard the Subway worker tell another customer that all they had left was round bread, so he left. A few kids followed him out the door to get his autograph. Btw this happened in rural Minnesota.

In italy tips aint mandatory like the us where i heard you need tips but you use tips as a sign of gratitude towards a good waiter. For example one evening we went to dinner in this restaurant and there was this young guy who served us. He took his time to look at the things we ordered come back and ask if some ingredients were ok anyways cuz some were spicy and it’s not really common in those dishes, then he just served us fast and clean. We had to give some tips cuz he was so good at his job
Whenever someone order a ton of items from the menu, I always just assume that it’s probably a group or family meal…
But if it was for one person, that’s when I’ll be scared
I currently work in fast food, and there was one time a couple weeks ago where this lady managed to come inside just barely before we locked the doors as it was literally one minute before we closed, and she asked if we could let the rest of them come in and that there was only a few of them, and the owner who works with us on the night shift (very nice guy) said sure why not, and let them in, the lady lied to him and like 25 people came in and none of us besides the owner were happy, then again the owner is old and has a business perspective on things so to him, it was good business, but the rest of us were peeved, now thankfully they were in and out quickly and didn't leave a mess so it wasn't THAT bad, but still very annoying
Now this is EXACTLY why we don’t cater to customers every need because then they backfire back at us with this mess. Hospitality work changes you after awhile
The pizza place that was closing soon can still be your favorite, no problem. Because they were right to deny service since there's no way they could have made you a pizza in 10 minutes. I don't know how people keep making a mistake over what seems like such a simple concept. Closing Time: 9:30 means "Operations shut down, the door locks, and everyone out by 9:30" it doesn't mean "Get in by 9:29 and then conduct business as normal for however long it takes".
The exact same thing happened to me at my Subway I used to work at. Pretty sure I've even had some last minute customers during summer order 14 sandwiches.
Tipping culture inside a resturaunt is weird. Tipping a Delivery driver makes sense because the fuel/car costs.

I used to work at a pizzeria that was inside a mall. We didn't have a front or back door, just a gate that we would raise and lower just to sneak in and out to like take out the trash or something. We had several people crouch or pretty much crawl under it before / after opening hours just to tell they want to order a bunch of items. Or knock on the gate like "HELLO ANYONE THERE? SERVICE PLEASE?" Dude, we're not open can you not tell?
I was working in a restaurant and we were cleaning everything, we had already turned off the oven and fryer and as soon as someone from the service came by I said that we were not going to make anything anymore, but when someone from the service finally came, she said told me that in 15 minutes 8 people would come to eat and we were really angry because we had already cleaned up and were about to leave.
I had an experience recently with a customer wanting to come in after closing. I work at a grocery store and I had to stay late to help deal with an issue about refrigeration in the store failing and getting someone in to repair it. I was waiting on the repair guy to arrive and was pulling product from parts of the store that were not keeping temp. Repair guy shows up the same time a customer arrives wanting to be let in to buy a bottle of alcohol an hour after the store had closed(and also clearly intoxicated so I wouldn't have sold it even if we were open).
I work part time as a taxi driver. When its a busy night and half an hour when youre supposed to finish work and you think, ok. One last customer from the party you can pick up... And this guy wants to go 40 km... Thats when you know itll take you one hour more to finish. ^^
I mean it all depends on the situation.
In your case, it was your parents subway restaurant so every sanwich sold is good for the family which is an encouragement on it's own.
Depending on the kind of meal you are making, like imagine someone comes in last minute and orders like 20 packs of fries heck yes I am gonna turn up the fryer again that was already cooling down, for one pack of fries? not so much.
Like if I am gonna do overtime it has to pay off which is more likely the case with a big order.

Didn't really have that with closing necessarily when I worked for Jimmy Johns. I did always seem to magically get orders I had to deliver right at or around closing. Like..seriously. It's night so often times I can't see anything and even if I get tipped its usually like little to nothing. Honestly the biggest tip I got was 50 bucks. One guy I worked with got 100 on like a 20 order.
Unfornately for the store I worked at if you tip in shop the tip gets split among the in shop workers working that certain amount of time/hour and we weren't supposed to have a tip jar, but my boss wanted it. Drivers kept all the tips made on deliveries, but we got a lower min wage as result. Basically I learned you need to always tip delivery drivers since most of the time that's there pay per hour sadly and no driver's reimbursements does not count as a tip nor does it go back to the driver...least my store it didn't/

A patient walks in at 1600 (4:00 PM) on a Friday needing paperwork filled out because he is moving out of the state the next morning.
It take 90 minutes to complete this paperwork. And he knew this for the past 6 months, but chose to put it off.
I sent my staff home, called my wife to say I would be late, and completed the paperwork.
No thank you, no tip, no apology. Plus I get no overtime despite being hourly pay. Don't work for Dept of Defense healthcare. They're not kind to their civilian employees.
1:25 She paid you a tip as it's closing time and you did not send her out, like a lot of other places would. She appreciated your hard work, that's what tip is for, appreciation for a job in customer service well done. :) (obviously though, this is like a spit into every other jobs face, like you don't appreciate the labor workers or something, but you don't really meet them face to face soo... Yeah...)
Was a kitchen manager for a short period at a breakfast restaurant called Jimmy's Egg. They serve breakfast and lunch and close at 2. One day we had, had an extremely slow day. By 1:50 I had everything shut down and ready to clock out at 2, which was earlier than the usual 2:30-3. 1:55 we get a call, main manager answers, it was someone ordering food, she decided to take it. IT WAS $150 WORTH OF FOOD! Long story short I clocked out at 3:15 that day
Yes those was some good sandwiches and my kid loved the steak sub! And no they wasn’t rushed you did great!

Oddest tipping experience I had was when I worked part time at Best Buy, some old grandpa dude wanted to tip me because I was really helpful to him and taught him a few basic things about computers. It was a slow day, I didn't care, it was fun.

Worked in a tool store. In the winter time it is dark until nearly 9 AM. We have only the front door open for employees to enter, but the showroom is dark,,, and I mean, you could justify a flashlight dark.
We employees get there at 8, and we open at 8:30. The lights do not go on, until about 5 minutes to 8:30.
Well one day I get to work,, I punch in about 7:55,,, I talk to a coworker for a few minutes,, literally about 2 minutes... then go to the showroom (still dark)... I'm setting up my area when I hear a noise... seeing as others do not show up until 8:30 I'm confused.
I then see it... A customer shopping in the dark. I couldn't believe it. When I got their attention and explained that we do not open for another 30 minutes their response... well the door was open. I then said,,, but there are not lights on... They shrugged their shoulders and just kept shopping...
I had no idea what to say or think anymore.
An 8 hour shift making sandwiches, can be a grueling day. Standing in one spot all day isn’t good for anyone. Not to mention looking down half the time, and dealing with certain people isn’t easy. When I worked at a food counter, I was lucky to be able to run to the restroom for 3 minutes, in an 8 hour shift. No breaks were given. In Wisconsin, it is not required to give adults any break during the day. Labor laws are really backward in this state, but I told myself, it’s still better than living in North Korea. Found a different job within 4 months.

Ending your noon shift at HomeDepot, and a customer comes up and asks to buy 10 wooden fences. And each fence they inspect and do not like, you have to put it to the side and go get another new one. Knowing that even once the customer has their 10 good fences, you’re gonna have to put back all of the ones they didn’t want to buy. And I’m taking about those giant prebuilt segments of wooden fences.
I once forgot a cornbread in the oven during closing. went in The next day and the manager (owners son) asked "what happened to the cornbread? I say "it's in the cooler" he then showed me the black cornbread says you could've burned the store down. I didn't get fired though 😅😅😅

In my younger years I worked at a reputable steak house. To anyone reading this I warn you…..unless it’s obvious they are still serving people do not enter a restaurant near closing hours, especially after closing hours.
The kitchen staff is packing up and cleaning so they can go home. I saw people get fed food thrown in the garbage after breaking down the line. The restaurant had a charcoal grill so steak cooks breathe that smoke in all night. I saw one steak cook reach back as far as he could and get out a loogie that had to be from the belly of the beast. That loogie was spit on top of a steak and cooked in.
Do yourself a favour and get to a restaurant before they are winding down for the night. It’s not just showing courtesy to the employees, it’s ensuring you get food that isn’t gross.

i mean you cant compare Subway and Pizza Place. you can make a sandwich in less than 10 minutes, but it takes longer to cook a pizza. thats why you guys should go to restaurants or fast food places an 1 hour or 1 1/2 hour before closing.

When I was a university student back in 2011, I depended on tips. My Mother covered only my housing expenses, and all other costs were met through the income I earned from working in retail/fast food. That taught me a valuable lesson in earning income. Rightfully so. You may not understand tipping culture as your parents probably coddled you. The harsh reality is that many fast-food workers struggle with financial challenges. Your statement is insensitive, as not everyone has the same level of privilege. You mentioned that your parents even own a Subway store or two, highlighting a level of financial stability that not all individuals enjoy. Think twice next time.

yeah and they get mad that we give them the cold fries and warm burgers. We are closing in a few moments. For people who don't understand. We stop cooking at a certain point. The last 30 minutes or so nothing is made unless we still have a line. So the food is still usually good, just not fresh. And a lot of places do start shutting down equipment to clean before they close. So yeah you aren't getting a burger cooked fresh. Some places are just ridiculous, they can drop fries, the fryer is still on, or chicken if it is put in a fryer. Popeye's though the chicken takes 15 to 20 minutes, cook and prep time. The fryers are filtered/cleaned and usually shut down around that time or earlier. So if you go some place and they are less than thirty minutes to closing, they may not mind a small order, but yeah that feeding the whole hood, is ridiculous.
That isn't really "Tipping Culture". Tipping Culture is where companies put obligatory tips onto their products/services and drop employee wages to accomodate for those.
What these customers were doing is just sharing some love to you for you going out of your way to help them.
just about a week ago we was closing up at Taco Johns at 11 pm and a customer comes in drive thru and orders $90.00 worth of food at 5 till close. Trust me that will always happen. Ive been in the restaurant industry for over 25 years and yes it does get old. We do need food

Yeah, I'm one of those late to order customers (not by choice), usually the places I order from are upen until 22:00 and I finish shift at 21:45 and I order then, I would order earlier but you literally can't preorder for 22:00, only 21:30 which you know... 15 minutes earlier than I finish work. I always get the stuff done which I really appreciate, but I would surely not go into the restaurant to tell them I'm the one ordering at that time XD
There was literally an order I made last week, I ordered gyros like written above and I was like: It's fast to make, 15 mins before closing time, hopefully they won't be cursing me. Then the delivery man arrived and was like: "Yeah, yours was your last order and they were pretty much closing in." I was just laughing emberrased while taking the prepayed food. Then noticed they even put a free cheese cake with strawberry on top of it with the order. I was just thinking like: Did the delivery man accidentally put it into my order and is going to call me? (didn't call me 30 mins later when I finished the food so I ate the cake), but I was also thinking the restaurant might had it leftover and just threw it into my order for some reason. It was a really good cake, so I'm just confused wtf happened lol
Some restaurants will give away free food during closing because otherwise the food is to be discarded, since they can’t sell day old food the next day. Sometimes this also happens at donut or cookie shops. If you go right before closing time, they will let you take extra baked sweets for free just to get rid of as much of the product as possible so it’s not going to waste.
