I applied isopropanol on very old shellac that was damage a lot by me scrubbing with water and dish soap. It's just getting worse... The shellac is rippeled of on some spots, it crystalized in whitish transparent crystals on other spots. I applied two new layers of shellac (also mixed with isopropanol ) in hope of fixing it. What am i doing wrong? Do i have to let it dry it for hours in between reapplying? Does the brush have to be soft? Can very hard wood give problems? Now i tried alkohol, but here in Italy it's colored pink... 😭😅
Don't use isopropyl. It usually has contains a mixture of other chemicals that can mar the finish. Look for pure grain alcohol at a liquor store. You want it as close to 100% as possible.
I love how forgiving shellac is and how easy it is to work with.

@@burnettefinefinishes8156what about denatured alcohol? i have that on hand, but can make a trip to the liquor store.
Denatured alcohol also has additives, but it can work in a pinch. Try it out on an inconspicuous area. Pure alcohol is always best.
What do you do for ingrained grime, polish etc. Would you sand it 1st then try to repair shellac surface?
It's a good idea to clean the piece really well before starting.
How did you clean this piece applying the alcohol.
You just brush on the alcohol with a paintbrush. It softens the shellac and returns the original shine.
Wot about using steel wool with alcohol?
The downside of steel wool is sometimes the fibers get stuck in the finish.
@@burnettefinefinishes8156 thx for the tip
