- There has always been a morbid fascination around serial killers, with hundreds of true crime books, countless documentaries, TV and feature films inspired by real life murder stories.
VICE interviews Paul Harrison about his career as a serial killer profiler. He interviewed more than 70 different serial killers and mass murderers to find out more about their psyches. He tells us about the times he spoke to Charles Manson, the Yorkshire Ripper and John Wayne Gacy.

It's strange how childhood trauma can create two people on opposite sides of the bars.
There's 3 outcomes with childhood trauma. Taking it out on yourself, taking it out on others or being able to cope and come out the other side.
Id say the third one is less learning how to cope and more learning how to confront and critically examine your own personal trauma. Personal opinion, coping is more like putting a band-aid on a bullet wound. Going to a good therapist (which is extremely hard to find and can be prohibitively expensive , totally understand that) and working towards becoming more metacognitive of how your personal trauma affects you will go so much further than just learning how to cope. Everybody’s perspective is different so finding a solid support system that works for you, even if it isn’t therapy or counseling, is critical to resolving childhood and adult trauma. We could also just have two different head definitions of what coping is and you already know all this.

These few comments are the most valid and interesting I've seen on the UA-cam comments so far.

Same!
Me too.
It's called mindhunter on Netflix, loosely based off him
Arrow Field No it wasn't. Mindhunter was based on John Douglas, An american FBI profiler.
Empathy towards his abusive father led him to study others. Commendable.
Enrique Suazo coping mechanism got him a job
Not empathy so much as getting tired of crossing the wrong wires and having a bomb blow up in your face. More likely he simply wanted to find out how to hack his dad so as to stay ahead of his temper.
He could've grow up to either be a psychopath or to catch those psychopaths. Glad he chose the latter.
@@triky5384 Serial killer, not psychopath. Most psychopaths aren't serial killers, nor do they necessarily commit felonies. Psychopathy is a psychological disorder, not a term for murderer as Hollywood like to make it seem. On the other hand, A serial killer May not necessarily be a psychopath at all.

"nice person" is not the same as "good person." I learned that via dating.
Nice=sociopath/psychopath. Good=lost in translation aka not valuable in this society
This actually perfectly sums up the whole "nice guy" phenomenon. Niceness can be used as a facade to weasle your way past someones personal boundaries and cause mass havoc whereas being a good person is just genuinely decent on face-value for no reason other than it's the right thing to do without ulterior motives.

@Osman Oglu it is saying sorry that that happened to you. It is meant to be a verbal sign of compassion for someone's experience. It is not apologizing for the person who hurt them but rather the situation. "I was blinded in a car accident." 'I am sorry that happened to you that is terrible."

I wanted them to ask him if he thought that anyone has the potential of becoming a serial killer. I'm curious about the nature-nurture aspect
Of course everyone does
I'm sure everyone has the potential, which is indeed a scary thing to acknowledge.
I read somewhere that everyone potentially has a motive no matter who they are
@Lord Humungus were you dropped on your head as an infant?
A good person to look into is Edmund kemper, the co-ed killer. Brilliant man, his IQ was that of a genius, committed horrible crimes, but listening to him speak in his interview is incredible and fascinating.
That prolonged look of horror after he says "I realized that only me could make me better". That mute gasp, like a part of him wants to talk about it but it's too horrible to be expressed. I've never seen anybody besides me do that.

Charles Bronson still has empathy, I think that is the difference. Even someone as violent as him would get the gut feeling that they are in the presence of a person with the conscience of a reptile. His intuition would have told him he was in the presence of someone dangerous in a different way than he is.
Given his traumatic childhood and how he turned it into good in helping us understand pathological behavior, I consider him a hero.
Oh, and his holistic approach to a policy solution is brilliant.

Aw poor baby was so little still trying to figure out why his dad was so cruel to him ☹️ that actually made me sad. At least he made something out of it. Seems he’s had a great mind from a very young age 💚
There's also an Ultimate to serial killer fandom. Partially through media, both fiction, and the news, or true crime documentaries like this one. You have Agatha Christie, and then you have The Silence of the Lambs. Christie's stories were mostly about the Upper Class, near royalty if not actual nobility in England. So, people read them partially for the scandal. Who was sleeping with whom, as well as whodunnit, but the cliche' about "The butler did it" points to the class of the people she wrote about. If a porter killed a waiter on The Orient Express, then nobody would care about it. There is the Escalation, and later in life, Christie escalated to at least 1 Serial killer tale. After she resorted to "Everyone did it" (Except for the servants, who weren't significant to the tale) she wrote the Pale Horse, and i won't spoil the ending, but it was basically a Serial killer. One man killing several people, serially instead of Witches. Then, we have Hannibal Lechter, who's refined, a gourmand, and a psychiatrist. He also had 6 fingers on each hand, and violet spokes in his eyes that seemed to rotate hypnotically when Starling looked into them... It's larger than life, the same reason why we're fascinated by supervillians (And elect them to public office.) Because serial killers are our supervillains, so those that catch them must be that good, to have caught them. Because we don't fight dragons to rescue princesses any more, we have Serial Killers, some of whom may pretend to be possessed by a Dragon.
Bro you just saved my philosophy exam thank u 💀
And yet he lied about all of his career, interviews, etc. Turns out when he was admiring Manson's level of manipulative skills he was trying to imitate them
People need to realize that having been abused doesn't create abusers or serial killers. Most survivors don't repeat the cycle but suffer instead. Unfortunately some people do become twisted and decide to inflict suffering on others. It's tragic but it's good that we learn about the violent outliers, and how to prevent these murders, brave guy.
I read the title as Serial Killer Prolifer and was SO confused at first 😂😂😂

I feel like childhood trauma and repeated trauma into adulthood either creates a force of great good, or a force of great evil. It either creates sadness, or an unquenchable rage.
I’m so fascinated by serial killers and their backgrounds. Psychologically, if it’s nurture or nature “as they say”. I can only judge by my own experience as a mother of a child that has no empathy, has an uncanny knack of compartmentalizing everything, and has no concern for anyone but herself. She was a problem from the day she had a personality. I felt that something was “off” about her early on. Her father has been diagnosed with many mental issues and was fired from the Sheriffs office in NorCal for liability reasons. I had no clue. He was so engaging, so alluring, and very charismatic. I know I was a very good mother. I had three other children that have all done well. I made it a priority because I didn’t have the best childhood. It was my goal to make sure my kids would be ready for the world in a good way. This one daughter of mine has been to many psychiatric specialists throughout her life and they have all diagnosed her with reactive attachment disorder, adhd, psychosis, DID, and other issues. I’m so afraid that she will become a monster someday to others as she has to our family. 😞
I'm very very very proud of him and I'm really sorry for the abuse he face when he was a child. He was indeed a very strong person to report his own father, came out of the abuse and strive for the betterment. I wish that I can give him a hug :(
