I made an 8320 mile contact the other day
    With the X6100 20meters ssb
    Texas to Australia
Out of a 20m hamstick hammered into my yard with some ground radials
All on 10w at sea level
    Absolutely blew my mind
    Im now hooked on QRP

I haven't used an OCF dipole, since I primarily operate portable (POTA/SOTA). But this antenna has been on my DXE wishlist for months now. I absolutely love the Weaver cube for the throw line and weight. It makes it so much easier to pack up and deploy. Thanks for another great video review.

Thanks Steve. I've used a 2012 for a few years now, it's a great "set it and forget it" antenna if you can get it high enough. Glad you showcased its strength. Per MFJ, it was designed by Rick Littlefield K1BQT when he was an engineer for MFJ. I contacted him for more specifics on the antenna, and he told me that while in his original design published in QST he used a 2.8:1 binocular transformer, the MFJ model uses a 2.8:1 autotransformer. He said that he discovered that a 2.8:1 autotransformer had lower loss and better SWR than 4:1. His past QST articles are worth a look, as he is quite the designer! Cheers, K7KS

That is really neat. I think that transformer design is pretty slick! Thanks for the extra info.

I've been running a Palomar 6-80m, 1500W, OCFD for my base station, set at 33' in an Inverted V installation. First DX was Australia. These antennas are easy to setup and work Great! I'm going to get the MFJ OCFD also!

I use this as my main HF antenna. The feed point at the apex of the roof and each leg follows down the roof, with the longer leg folded 90degrees at the bottom corner to keep it fitting in the attic. The result is an inverted V with dogleg, compromised by the roof. Despite this, performance is excellent, with contacts on ft8 ar 25W from the US east coast near DC south all the way to Chili and past eastern Eastern Europe to Oman. I have one mainland Australia and one Japan in the other direction.

I had that antenna for a while and had excellent results. Had it at 30' flat top. Only reason I took it down was to put up another OCFD that tuned more bands.

I've had the 2010 lower power version of this antenna for four years now, and I've made solid 20m contacts to Eu and Au on only 20 watts from my G90 from southwestern Idaho.
The apex is at 23 feet. Both the 2010 and 2012 are excellent values.

Use velcro or twist ties to hold the wire together for storage. There are also releaseable zip ties but they can be hard to find.
I've always found the challenge to using dipoles in the field is getting the legs around branches.

When i got my general I (last year) I bought the MFJ 2010 and it has served me very well. Well, until I broke the best branch on a tree. I'm not sure if I had it too tight on the branch or the branch was already compromised. Either way I need to get it back up there or continue to use my packtenna mini which has been pretty good.
Also, I don't remember if you said it, but the legs should should be greater than 90 degrees apart. Kisses

That the antenna I have and use. I am in Boston NY . hour or so drive for me to Lockport. yes that wire turned black and green after 1 winter in NY. I did not6 get it up that high so I had to trim it. 1/3 to 2/3 cut. center fed is 1:1 cut. got it from MFJ and still sell it. I have THHN 12AWG on it now. and run power threw it. works great. used it portable. the short side into para cord to park bench ,long side with para cord on a DX commander pole lean into a tree. sloped set up. works and tuned great. I think 80 meters add wire. they have a 80 meter one not Shure if off center or not. 4:1 for off set center. 1/3-2/3 wire length . end fed is 49:1 and can be 64:1 changes cut length a bit. The spark plug antenna is a 64:1 . getting DX commander DX 50 green dipole wire he sells to put on it and outher antenna projects. DX commander made a end fed with a 64:1 and with 160 meters of wire. and got a tune on it. and close to ground. I thought about a loop on ground 160 meter with a 4:1 but no where to put it . some park ? 1 did a 160 meter center fed on the ground in a park in the snow . had to shorten a few feet to tune. got out great at night ! 160 a funny night band and for NY its opens in winter . summer is just to much noise to use. 73's

When I first got my General license, I asked around, and read a bunch, trying to figure out what my home base station antenna was going to be. A ham on a facebook group recommended an OCFD, and said he had managed to work the whole world / every continent with it. Gigaparts was selling the RadioWavz DX80 at the time, I ran that up in a tree outside my house and it's been there for almost 2+ years now, and I've managed SSB contacts on every continent and over 100 countries. I do not own an amp, it's just 100 watts and that antenna. I can't recommend an OCFD enough. 73 de KD2TJU
