That little cement slab brings me back about 65 years ago. There was a similar sized slab at my grama's house off her back porch. Every morning, when I was at her house, I'd be be ready to head out to play in the yard ... but the lawn would still be wet with dew. If I went out too soon, my little canvas tennis shoes would get soaked. So Grama would tell me to stay on the cement until the grass was dry. It was a tough thing for a little kid to wait that long --but I did it.
I love stories about grandma's! I didnt know either of mine and i always hear such sweet stories about learning how to cook from grandma and just things that she would say that granddaughter's remember. So sweet!
@@marge1538 My Grama was one of the great ones. I always had the feeling that my Grama loved me way more than anyone else did. She spent a lot of time with me and really showered me with affection. Needless to say, she was my favorite person in the world.

Doug! You took off the whole front of the house in Michigan and that tiny slab intimidated you!? Come on, you have shown that you can do anything that you put your mind to. It's a pleasure watching you figure it all out and make it a reality. As always, super proud of you, Ashley and your accomplishments! Keep up the great work!
Your getting better with the excavator! Don't overcorrect when backing a trailer! Your wife is an awesome worker!!! Solomon said it best... A good wife is worth more than gold! Good on ya!
Doug, in the future, try using a reciprocating saw without a blade to vibrate the edges of the form. This will help your mix to settle and should provide you with results more like you intended. Also, lift the front edge of the edging tool (in the direction you are attempting to smooth). You were right your mix was just a tad dry when you were attempting to do the edge. Still, you did a great job. It should remain functional for as long as you need. Ashley is happy, you should be happy!
Some comments on the lack of brooming the wet concrete for non-slip surface. I live in a new house and the builder aggressively broomed all of the concrete...hate it. Cant sweep anything off, the dirt just stays put in the myriad crevices and the the heavy texture makes sweeping very difficult, grabs the broom fibers. I know most people these days are into noisy machines, power washers, blowers, but if you intend to peacefully sweep, the broomed surface really sucks.
Somehow this video really touched me .To see Maverick hanging about with you , making remarks , part of the team . Just to see you all working together in harmony , free to be yourselves and achieving great things . Is there nothing you can’t do !
Hi Doug and family, don't beat yourself up over the slab, you're doing a great job it's your first after all, I thinks it looks pretty good. Most people wouldn't be able to achieve half of what you have.
Doug, you and Ashley did a great job building your slab. The next time you do it, it will even be better. Don't worry about the sides because no one is going to see them. You two are amazing!!
The slab is good. You two work so hard sorting out the house. No one should expect every job you do to be 100% perfect. Good enough is good enough! Don't be too hard on yourselves. ☺
You guys have the ideal job! You get to stay home all day and do home improvement and maintenance jobs and get paid for it. I'm envious. Keep up the good work. Love the videos!
Oh and thank you for advising Sam at Green Acre Homestead that he needed to remove his plastic "Northern moisture barrier" off his insulation. That was sweet of you to help him.
Bravo!! As a couple every task is carried out with such grace and calmness. Very exciting watching your amazing progress and all the skills involved. I would always hide when my parents tackled any project. Such a joy to watch your videos. You all remind me of the saying "Keep calm and carry on!"
For a better looking side on your slab, you just need to tap on the form boards. This will allow the cement to settle against the backside of the form boards and give you that nice finished look when they are removed.
Almost professional is good enough. Practice makes perfect...looks great. So funny watching Doug on his excavator with The Nutcracker music playing in the back ground. Epic !!
“We don’t mind taking our time and doing a little hard work”. Really? We hadn’t noticed 😂 I mean, a LITTLE hard work? Y’all are the most willing, the hardest-working couple I’ve ever seen! You’ve tackled some dirty and daunting jobs…one of the dirtiest and overwhelming jobs that pops in my memory now wasn’t even a job on own property but to help out a fellow UA-camr. I’ve never seen so much get accomplished by one man and one petite woman. Wow.
Just an idea. I know a lot of people are saying you should plant grass. I think I'd try to just fill in the open spaces with native Floridian plants. Not that I know what they are, but a lot of people are moving away from monoculture grass lawns to permaculture and native plantings to encourage more wildlife and biodiversity. Plus natives are just easier to deal with. Plant and forget. I think the kids would love it and Ashley could live in a Floridian wonderland. And Doug would just be happy to have the family happy. LOL!
Florida grass is so stiff and not too comfy to walk on. At least the places I visited it was like that and I come from soft Western NY grass. So this idea is such a good one. One thing I love about FL that isn't all that prevalent here in NY is outdoor up lighting. It's so dramatic and beautiful. So native Florida plants with some uplighting would be beautiful in think.
My hubs is a mason. He said to tell y'all not bad for first attempt. And you are correct with the stuff that wasn't quite right but that's how you learn! Looks great! Take care!
Everytime you take on a new project you inspire me to try to take on a project myself. Thank you, my home is looking better because of your inspiration.
Great job as always.👍 I was told to tap the timber lightly with a hammer all the way around the timber form work when the cement has been poured, before smoothing off. It gives it a much smother finish on the sides and less bubbles and gaps.
What a great project to learn so much. When you're so close to the project, you see every flaw normally but I think in the end, everyone will see how well the finished project turned out. Thanks again for taking us along.
When you build the steps, use the rule of 17. The rise and the run of one step should equal about 17 inches added together and the tread should be about double the rise. If you use 2X6 for treads it works out great. Use 2 2X6 for the treads with spacing between them and 1 2X6 for the riser and you will be good to go. The reason is it gives your foot plenty of tread to step on and the rise is a comfortable lift for your leg when you step up or down giving you the proper stride. 5.5 rise +5.5 +5.5 treads +.5 space = 17. Easy Peasy. It was the Greeks who first devised this rule.
I love the care and time you both put into the projects you do. I think the slab turned out great, and especially for the first one you’ve done. If it were me, and it’s not,. I would get a load of gravel for the drive, especially for where the workshop will sit. It will make so much difference in usability. Next time tap the outside of the form with a hammer it will consolidate the concrete and bring more cream to the side to eliminate the air holes !! Start your edging earlier while the concrete is still alittle soft !! After you smooth the concrete with the trowel you could have pulled a broom across it !! I would always mix up 2 bags of concrete mix at a time and mix them a little wetter then what it says on the bag ! You have to make it workable ! But all in all you did a good job for your first time ! And buy your self a concrete hand float !!

small bit of advice, With all the water you get there I would start your French drain now while you are moving sand and dirt. I really like your videos, I hope my joking about your finish hammer never came across as malicious....
It only looks easy, it actually takes a bit of practice to get good at it. We have poured an incredible amount of slabs here at our farm, to the point that we own our own cement mixer. I think you did a wonderful job for a first time and I am sure you learned a lot in the process. The next one will be even better.
I watched some of your videos when you guys were renovating the kitchen in the red and white mobile home, I didn't realize that I had been following you guys for that long.
I was expecting you to start performing the Kalinka dance with that music as you were tamping the sand, lol. I’d say for your first concrete slab, that’s an awesome job. The end pours DID look like what comes out of the trucks, but if we DON’T learn as we go along, we’re just sitting stagnant. “Better to try and fail than to not try at all” … your next one is sure to be as perfect as the pro’s ❤️❤️❤️
Mortar is thumbprint hard when the image of your thumbprint can be left in the mortar. When the mortar is too wet, it will not form a thumbprint. It just sticks to the thumb.
You could always paint or resurface the concrete with a thin concrete itself, if you want to improve aesthetics and cover the stains. Also, I kind of like the vibe on the sand on the property. It makes it feel very tropical and like you live directly on the beach... lol!
Looks great Doug! Your little guy was funny when he told Ashley you didn’t say bye! Too cute. That music was great with Doug’s choreography on the digger! 👍👍
Needed the mix to be a bit wetter. But it looks good. Concrete work is an art that comes with practice. Not bad for a first project. Fun to watch Doug on the excavator dancing to the waltz lol.
Best way to learn is to do it. Pretty good job for the first time. Next time you can always rent a mixer for a day, get one that will allow you to mix about three bags at a time. If I were you I would pour a lot of sidewalks around that swampy yard. Thanks for sharing.

The slab kind of looks like marble on the left side from the porch. I does look professional. The whole out side is looking better and better. Great job.
I do concrete for a profession i mean i do it in a different climate but the compaction in lifts was excellent the concrete was a little to stiff on the first pour but you were getting it. Thats going to last a while you did a great job for your first pad. Be proud of what you did. If you do another one take your drill put it on impact go around the form when the concrete is in and vibrate the boards it will not have air pockets in it.
Great job on your first slab! Can't wait to see the steps. Would not have wanted to have to maneuver the shop and van through those poles! You did great doing it in a half hour!!! Now that you are comfortable with mixing cement, check out Helen Wyatt on youtube. She makes big planters, bird baths etc. Great projects for landscaping! I made one of her draped fabric planters and it's going on its third summer. Bye, Maverick! See you Ashley and Doug! lol.

Ashley that was funny........oh Doug hehehe...That slab looks great! You should be very proud of yourself, it looks very professional. As far as the bolts, work with what you have, my Opa's favorite work quote.
I think you did a pretty good job. Concrete is not a job for cowards, and it sets and cures at its own pace and waits for no one. Not a bad job at all, well done.
You know I was wondering why you weren’t using the excavator for digging that pad out and then you switched to it, that was funny. Ashley cracked me up good when you were pounding the stakes in and she said regarding how far down are you going, what are they going to do run away? Hahaha real good, and hay that slab is just fine it will last a very long time.👍👍
Doug better start building himself a doghouse to sleep in if he doesn’t leave Ashley alone about the snoring lol 😂 Excellent job as always! You two work so well together.

I enjoyed the Russian music a lot. I wasn't sure if it was Russian, Jewish, or Turkish until I looked in the show more, it felt like it has elements of all of it, but it was great. I played too much of that piece from Tchaikovsky in my youth and sat through too many ballet performances and recitals (or played for them) to ever truly enjoy it anymore, but it went really well with the scenes you put it over.
Oh my goodness, I know it’s not real time but I was praying for you as you were navigating the trailer move! Well done family! 💜 Cheering you on from NC 🙌🏼🥰

You could learn a lot from him. Hes funny and very informative.
Another enjoyable video; thanks Ashley and Doug. And thanks Maverick for that "bye" at the end. A perfect end to another entertaining video.
The slab kind of looks like marble on the left side from the porch. I does look professional. The whole out side is looking better and better. Great job.
From a concrete workers wife you did really good! Concrete is hard to work with to begin with 😁
Good morning, Ashley! Hope you are having a beautiful Florida day.❤️😊
The slab came out great. Ashley is correct it looks professional. The idea of the sand is working so well. Be blessed.
See you Ashley and Doug! lol.
BEAUTIFUL!!!!! Now you need a cement mixer!!!!!!!! Love you guys all so much!!!!!!
Preferably sooner as they still have cores to fill and they many decided on a sidewalk from the driveway in the future.
You're two of the hardest working people I've ever seen! The slab isn't perfect, but it works, and it was a great learning experience. So proud of you for not being afraid to try new things! Keep it up, y'all! Very impressive!🤩😇
i watch Doug and Ashley for t his very reason. i recently discovered this very young couple (Daveid and Despina) in Latvia...equally hard working and doing things in an "old world" way..you might like thme too: Do and Be Different Farmily
Not a bad job at all, well done.
for someone that never did this before your like a master? Nice job guys. Hope it hards good for you
You know I was wondering why you weren’t using the excavator for digging that pad out and then you switched to it, that was funny. Ashley cracked me up good when you were pounding the stakes in and she said regarding how far down are you going, what are they going to do run away? Hahaha real good, and hay that slab is just fine it will last a very long time.👍👍
Great job! I think it turned out very nice. The property is changing so much! 😊 Thanks for sharing. Hugs and love from Mississippi ❤️
You should make a roof or pump house , for the well , sun and rain protection, will last longer , keep it all shinny new
Doug better start building himself a doghouse to sleep in if he doesn’t leave Ashley alone about the snoring lol 😂
Excellent job as always! You two work so well together.
Hi Doug, Ashley,Belle and Maverick! You did a great job! Cement work is hard work. I loved Maverick he is so cute!! ❤😍 Look so forward to every video! Have a nice day! You guys are amazing!
Good day. Love watching u guys It would be nice to have a slab to set the workshop on. Just saying. Have a wonderful day. 👍
That slab has a marbleized look! People pay extra for that! GJ Doug!
You two are awesome. Not afraid to tackle any job. Love your videos, love from Idaho.
Cheering you on from NC 🙌🏼🥰
Good job I've watch those people in Japan mix the cement in a big pile on the ground n they do an awesome job you're doing a good job leveling the sand around my blessings go out to you guys stay safe ❤️❤️ 🥰❤️☺️🥰
You and Ashley did a great job with the slab. Together you guys are definitely a team. 🤗🤗The work shop looks totally awesome.
