Thanks for sharing your goals for the year Steve. I am a native English speaker living in Japan for my 8th year with a C1/C2 level in Japanese and I have been studying Korean and Mandarin on and off for the last 2 years but am really focused on Korean now and hoping to achieve a conversational level in it before the end of the year! Just bought a Korean light novel and also bought the Japanese version as well so I can check the Japanese version to understand nuances better but super excited! Happy new year!
I want to boost my italian further, I reached a level where I can actually talk and not only stammer and this motivates me a lot. I also want to learn spanish, I started half a year ago and I really like the language allthough I sometimes get confused with italian and spanish vocabulary 😂
Same! I was considering picking back up on Spanish this year, but I am not sure if I should give myself 2025 to continue improving my italian and then adding Spanish in 2026.... I'm already forgetting words in English; how bad will it be once I start relearning spanish.. .haha!!
I agree with you in focusing on commitment instead of goals, as we can't control what we can't control! So in 2025 I am committing to 1 hour per day in each of the 3 languages I'm currently studying: French (currently B2/C1), German (currently B1/B2), and Norwegian (currently A2). Once I get to the point where I can read/listen with more ease in Norwegian, I'll likely add back Greek (which I had been studying 2 years ago, but dropped due to lack of time), maybe mid-year, maybe the end of the year. I'm looking forward to seeing how the year progresses!
2025 is going to be my 3rd year in the quest of learning Russian and French. I 'fooled' myself into believing that by my 2nd year of learning these languages, I’d be fluent, but it hasn’t happened. However, I’m still committed to my goal, and if I look back in time, I see a lot of progress (I started from 0). I’m not burned out by the process at all (mainly because I don’t try to study grammar, memorize vocabulary, or anything like that). So, I’ve decided to extend my goal by one more year and see what happens in this 3rd year in a row. I hope that by the end of 2025, I’ll be fluent. Have a great year, everyone!
Great idea and progress. Don't even worry about how long it takes to learn the languages because it's impossible to predict and also if it takes you longer, you get to enjoy the learning for longer!
@@edkinge1531 I don't think so. It should be learned in a certain period of time. A language like French can be learned in 2 years. I think it is possible to reach B2 level. It is more than enough time. If you can't reach this level in 2 years with regular study, you are doing something wrong. There are people who learn in less than 2 years. You should change your way of studying. After a certain period of time, it causes boredom and low motivation. Personally, I couldn't study.
@@edkinge1531 I have a slightly different mindset than what Steve explains in this video. I need some challenge in order to commit myself and push through when things don’t go my way, or else I’ll quit. So, I fooled myself into believing that, even though I knew it was too ambitious since I can’t learn full time, that feeling would drive me back onto the right path whenever quitting or burning out eventually appeared. But I understand what you and Steve meant. Like I said, I enjoy doing this, and it hasn’t been a tiring process so far. And whenever I look back to where I started, I can actually see tremendous progress.
@@placebo_7505The language itself doesn’t mean anything in terms of how long it would take you to learn it. It has to do with your native tongue and how ‘close’ those two languages are - the target language and your own mother tongue. So, saying two years is completely unfounded. I also have to add that learning two languages at the same time is more time-consuming, and on top of that, I do this in my spare time for fun, not for a job. But, as you pointed out and I’ve already answered, I always set myself a deadline. I feel challenges are the best way for me not to quit and push through when things get harder. That’s why I said I fooled myself into believing I was going to be able to become fluent in two languages in less than two years. But, in the long run, it has worked in my favor because now I’m around an intermediate level, but I’m not burned out, and I’m still enjoying learning a little bit every day. I don’t even notice it.
I am a fluent Turkish speaker. And I have B2 English, intermediate Korean and German around A2-B1 level. I can speak in all of them comfortably. I want to make less mistakes while talking, improve the levels in those languages and I hope to improve my Chinese hsk1 level. But I will mostly focus on my German and make it at least B2 till end of the year.. I will be watching your videos over and over this year as well. Thank you so much for everything🙏🏻
It’s so wonderful to see someone like you among those who use age as an excuse not to improve themselves. If you ever come back to Turkey, I would be delighted to meet you.
I'm already the happiest guy I could ever be this year "language wise", because I am not afraid of speaking anymore and for the first time I spoke english for one hour long yesterday 🎉 I know I have the capacity to do the same thing" maybe not that well" in russian and spanish, so my goal is to practice as much as possible and maybe start learning german if everything goes well.
Happy New year to you and your family. I agree with the difference between goal and commitment, but in my case, I can only talk about goals because I never respect my New Year's resolutions, commitment is more a promise we make . So my resolution is minimum, I'll try to do more deliberate learning.
My goal/commitment is to read my German books more consistently and to get to a level where I can pick French back up and not feel like it interferes with my German!
It's not really a new year's goal, but I'm a B2 in Spanish and would like to get to a C1 or C2 where I can read books, watch UA-cam, etc in Spanish more or less as comfortably as I can in English. At that point I think my Spanish will just about improve on its own due to my UA-cam habit. In order to achieve that, I'm reading through the RV60 version of the Bible. I've also been reading and listening on LingQ, and I've been looking for Spanish speaking UA-cam channels based on my interests. Afterwards I think I'll start slowly chipping away at learning Hebrew.
Happy New year, Steve! Thanks for the video. Always thought provoking. I believe in consolidating what I already have, rather than getting another notch on my gun belt, so I want to take my Finnish from B1 to B2, my Italian from B2 to C1, and my French from -Z to B1 (I have a grounding and speak fluent Spanish). Good luck with your plans
Great to see your commitments for the year! I have two main language focussed ones: I’m probably about a B2 in Swedish for reading and listening - there’s not much I don’t understand, but I’ve never really spoken. So right now I struggle with that. You’ve always said that someone who is proficient at reading and listening will catch up with their speaking ability pretty quickly if they just speak a lot, so my Swedish commitment for the year is to speak a lot! My hope is that with a couple of lessons a week for the year I’ll be able to take my speaking ability up to a B2 as well. I’ll then plan a trip to Sweden (I’m in Scotland, so it’s not far) and try it out. My other language is Turkish - I’m going to commit to reading and listening for an hour a day (although I’m allowing myself some leeway when it comes to holidays and event days). Let’s see where the year takes me! I’m excited - bring on 2025!
I live in Japan going on 20 years. I'm actively also studying Spanish, Chinese, and this year German. No real "goal(s)," to speak of... I like learning. But of course, I would like to get better over this year. Certainly, like last year, I want to make effort every day. Everything else after that I don't really control much...
I am committing each day to continue my Japanese studies, IT/certification studies, and healthy eating and physical activity along with saving money for my goal of moving to Japan to work in the IT sector in the next 3-5 years.
I commit to Ancient Greek this year. I took a look at it about 8 years ago in an University Course but decided then to follow another pathway. But now I have time to endulge it once more.
Happy new year! Nice plan to go back to Persian! My language plan for 2025 is to keep jumping around between languages and make no noticeable progress anywhere! 😅
Thanks for sharing Steve. I have been studying Russian for 5 years (started Dec ‘19) and while I can read books at an A2 level and listen with subtitles at A2, I can only speak and listen (without subs) at A1. So my goal is to reach A2 level speaking and B1 reading this year. I plan to take A1 exam in June and A2 in Dec. and much like you, I am traveling to Finland 🇫🇮 in a few years so I have strongly considered starting to learn it now, bc I agree, it takes so much time invested! Icelandic 🇮🇸 was another consideration but I don’t plan to travel there any time soon! 😅
B2 in Japanese. Maybe N3 in December. Not so certain about that one though. I keep changing my mind. Everyday I will stay with the language. Read, Listen and Speak. That’s what I will do
I am making a goal to reach c1 in French and learn enough German to read sein and zeit as well as other German philosophy books not in the public domain.
I speak Fulani, Hausa( Nigerian languages), English and Arabic. I have learned Hindi too, but not to a fluency level as the rest. This year I wanna focus on French as I wanna travel to Cameroon( a neighbouring country having French as their official language).
Since I’m a very busy Bible teacher, I have committed to Duolingo 😮 each day as a bare minimum because I will not be able to speak Latin with anyone, ever, I just love the language. Same with German, not going there, they speak English, but I love it. I’ve been sloppily learning Spanish for years because I can get by with what I know now. I left off Chinese, Russian, Hebrew, Persian and Italian because I just wasn’t motivated anymore because I left an area that had over 100 languages in the city, then moved to a “non ethnic” area to learn Pennsylvania German. A tiny bit of Spanish and Haitian Creole there but maybe 1%. I lost my motivation. After reading my own response here, I can see that having an actual point to what I’m doing, (like I did in French) is probably the motivation that’s lacking for me. None of these are necessary for me anymore so how much am I willing to commit to something that I really won’t use, except for my own joy? I love language and how it connects me to others and gives me a more global understanding…however I also want to play piano (also for years and just passable) and I’d love to learn the accordion, plus do my artwork and writing…discipline for just one thing feels hard for me. I guess I’d rather dabble for my own pleasure rather than being proficient? But that’s a bit hollow because I’m terribly frustrated and a little embarrassed that I have “studied” to so much and can converse so little. I do well when I commit but I’m having trouble… Steve, what would you say to a person like me who is truly in love with so many pursuits?
My plan for 2025 is to stick with the same three target languages as in 2024 and 2023: Greek, Polish and Russian. I don't have the time to start a new language right now, but at least I want to learn the Arabic script this year.
I have heard you speak Persian, and you speak very well. I am learning French, and I heard about Linqg yesterday. Let's see, at the end of the year, can I speak French as well as you speak Persian? I am on the A2 level of French now, and If you need help with practicing your Persian, pls let me know :)
Well, my main goal is continuing improving my english and achieve the advanced level c1 and at same time have a commitment to study more italian and leave the A1 level. Of course english is so more important for me,fortunately english today is part of my life, almost everything that i consume is in english, and i pratice my speaking oftenly, and i have a lot fun Making immersion in this language, be in the movies, videos, etc nevertheless in italian, i cannot do this yet, this consistence in the imersion, even cause i am begginer, even though italian is kind of easy for me cause i am brazilian native and portuguese has so much similarities, but i need more commitment to see significant improvements in my italian.
I ALWAYS feel like New Years should be in the spring so that’s really cool the Romans & Persians did it that way I feel extremely vindicated for my instinct on that 😅
hey steve i had a question, what would the biggest advice that you would give with getting past, present, and future correct? im around a year and 4 months in spanish and im still a little sloppy with saying the right past present future form of a word. i myself don't care about what version i use as long as the person understands me but i just wanted to ask you
I'm a little confused about the actions I need to take to achieve my goal. I want to get to B2 (I'm currently B1) in German and Spanish, revive my French, and also start Turkish. If anybody has any tips for me, please feel free to reply.

Systems over goals.
Happy new year. In 2025 I want to speak and write English better.
Systems and commitments
Happy new year everyone!
Hello Steve how's it's going? Great 2025 for you, happy New year. See you next bye.
B2/C1 Spanish!!!
My goal is to get to B2 in Spanish!!
B2 does not exist, actually.
🎉🎉
I ALWAYS feel like New Years should be in the spring so that’s really cool the Romans & Persians did it that way I feel extremely vindicated for my instinct on that 😅
My goal is to reach 1 million words read on LingQ and 200 hours listened in both French and German in 2025
Thanks for the video! When you say you want to archive B2. Do you mean understand B2 or also talking B2. Which I understand are two different things.
Both!
hey steve i had a question, what would the biggest advice that you would give with getting past, present, and future correct? im around a year and 4 months in spanish and im still a little sloppy with saying the right past present future form of a word. i myself don't care about what version i use as long as the person understands me but i just wanted to ask you
👏👏👏👏
I'm a little confused about the actions I need to take to achieve my goal.
I want to get to B2 (I'm currently B1) in German and Spanish, revive my French, and also start Turkish.
If anybody has any tips for me, please feel free to reply.
Sadly I can't commit for this video. But it must have been great.
My goal is to achieve a B2 level in Mandarin Chinese
I suggest for you to read QURAN, it will change your life.

..I am your sister from Yemen, and by Allah I only spoke out of hunger and distress. My mother, my brothers, and I lessons and tears. We are in a situation that only Allah knows about. Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs for those who brought us to this situation. By Allah Almighty, I did not write this appeal out of distress and distress. Poverty, O world, they have felt it So, I hope for you. By Allah Almighty, Lord of the Great Throne, he ate what I had in the house. By Allah, my brothers, he is my brothers by sitting in the house. Who has no food? By Allah, we are in a very difficult situation. We have 4 people entering the house, and my father has died, and there is no one who can depend on us and who lives in it.We live in a rented house because we cannot pay the rent we owe. I am a Yemeni girl displaced from the war. My family and I live in a rented house in Al-Shahrab 20,000 Yemenis among us, and now we owe 60,000 for 3 months. The owner of the house is one of the people who does not have mercy, by God, my brother. He comes every day, insulting us, talking about us, and moving from the house to the street because we were unable to pay him the rent. The neighbors saw us crying and came back. They came back to talk to the neighbors and we were given the weekend. So we made him swear by Allah. He will take us out into the street. Have mercy on him and us. Our country is due to this war and we do not find food for our day, and my brothers and I live in a difficult life. Our father died, may Allah have mercy on him, and we have no one in this world who was with us in these harsh circumstances. My younger brothers went out into the street and saw...The neighbors eat and stand at their door in order to give them bread even if they break it. By Allah, to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, they closed the door and expelled them and came back crying. They are dying of hunger. No one has mercy on them and a holiday is returned. I have made a living, and now if one of us helps us with a kilo of flour, I swear to Allah, I am dying of hunger. My brother, I am an alien to God. Then, I ask you to help me for the sake of Allah. I ask you, by Allah, to love goodness and to help me, even if you can, by messaging me on WhatsApp.On this number 00967712414748 and ask for the name of my card and send it and do not be late and may Allah reward you with all the best, my brothers Sagar, see how they are and help us and save us before they throw us out in the street, you will be lost or we will die of hunger.
