Terrific tip that helps clammers break fewer soft shells, essentially digging away from the hole and then using your fingers to find the little rascals (important to use the gloves, your fingers will get cut by the steamers' shells) but the inexpensive gloves take care of that. I'd recommend folks begin searching for quahogs in the shallow water, rather than on a dry shore line.
