This just sums up why I hate going against a good Kensei player and it feels like winning a gold medal when I beat one.
Yeah, considering I feel like I'm a pretty good Kensei, I feel his stamina drain is the only issue but being defensively sound makes up for it. Before, being a good Kensei was really hard since he had a somewhat limited tool kit. Since his rework though, he is so much more versatile and fluid, making it easier to shut down really fast assassins.

Alien Exotics ive dropped him after this rework :( the beauty of him before (in my opinion) was that he was so underpowered and when you beat the top tier chars you felt like a god, dont get that so much now as he IS a top tier boi... ive hopped on to zerk now tho which is v enjoyable
He isn't exactly a top tier boi. In 4v4 perhaps, but i give him a B+ rating in duels. Still can be countered by a lot
50ShadesOf Goat hardly think he is top tier yet .. other players just need a bit of time to adjust and counter.. i think he is actually harder to play and he still has no OP cookie cutter moves ..but ultimately you now can get rewarded for your efforts.
On console his pommel strike and side lights are near unreactable. While the zone is entirely unreactable unless you continuously are dodging and risking gbs. He's hands down the most bullshit character now and about to make me quit playing for honor all together. I've played orochi since season 1 and this season they fucking nerf him?

Sometimes I go for helmsplitter on heavy parry because it's almost as much damage and leads directly to chain finisher
That's a good choice as well
Swift Strike : Top Heavy Unblockable (Soft Feint) : Guard break : And so on. Pretty useful chain I've whipped up.

Epic guide bro, I feel like a pro day one playing the game after your guide, Very well done.
Funny thing is some of the things from S1 still work and cost less stamina but of course do less damage. Feint top heavy into top light works as well as throwing out S1 stuff as long as you delay the feint is quite strong as well as less risky. Normally though if I can trick them into trying to parry the top, I’ll take the trade although I will say be careful trying to do this against Conq, Warlord, and Arumusha because they can all guard into counter which is really bad.
However I do find myself doing S1 things more than the newer stuff. The dash gb is still useful for that delay to help the catch or perhaps counter all guard because they panicked.
Kensei has so many tools but I think you can still do fine with S1 style mixed with the new Kensei especially if you can both cause your opponent to panick and get them to dedicate themselves to a mistake which even in S1 I had no problem in doing except for turtles. Some interesting pointers though.
I was playing a bit of kensei earlier today and i found that you can dash guardbreak out of the top heavy start up instead of doing the pommel strike to catch your opponent in the middle of the their dodge.

Kensei almost seems like more of a hit-and-run player now as far as getting in quick strikes whenever possible as opposed to long-drawn-out combos. Awesome video!
I can see that, I enjoyed the combos, but yeah it seems like a get in and get out playstyle works best
Toeknee does he feel slower to you? Maybe it's just me but I feel like the game pace is a little bit more sluggish
It's slower for sure, the top heavy used to be fast af, and now the start up is super slow, but you are forced to use it to get into mixups

This is a very good guide and I was told some things I didn't know. Kensei is A tier so I feel happy that my main first the past year is good now.
Tony just one thing, Your opponent can get a free guardbreak if they dodge your pummel strike but only if they're quick enough so be aware of that brother!❤ also great mixups can't wait to 1v1 one day

Hey Toeknee.. Thank you for this first guide. It helped me to understand the new changes a got me some new Ideas fpr Combis. A "big" Problem, that I see with the changes is the extrem slow Top Heavys (1 sek)...It feels like an eternity to me...and specially the Assasin classes attack you till until you could feint into for example a Side Light...Thats frustrating at the moment..They made very good changes to Kensei on the one hand and on the other hand fighting against enemys who also feint like hell is an torture..... What you think? Greetings and keep up your very good work!

From a combo I've my own 1. helm splitter + unblockable + nature's wrath + unblockable + nature wrath + feint light/heavy attack
2. Helm splitter + unblockable + nature's wrath + unblockable GB + Light attack

Thanks was helpful! But i really doubt they will chsnge the speed of the heavy startup. Otherwise kensei will be so strong. Top lights off neutral will help negate the interupts

I mostly take advantage of the helm splitter unblockable, the pommel strike and guard break unblockable, as well as third heavy unblockable. Lord help me.

Stopped playing FH ..2 seasons ago and just picked it up again due to Kensei rework. I feel that Kensei has become even more of an advanced players character as the amount of moves and mix ups now can seem a bit overwhelming. I think that trick now is to use all the tools to keep unpredictable but this means a higher level of knowledge and mastery...compared with other button mashing and cookie cutter characters. This coupled with, as you say the timing, distance and patience makes kensei challenging as ever but now with more reward for effort.
Yeah It's more of a get in and get out playstyle, when the old kensei was just get into your mixup and go ham
Toeknee yeah ..thats actually a great tip .. initally i was trying to go in hard with mixups and pommel strikes and wondering why i kept getting smacked out of them...and like someone said stamina can become a real issue so you need to pick and choose when to strike ..

I'm not sure how this happened but it did. I'm only level 7 with the kensei and my gear stay is 0, yet I was charged by a highlander and I used the three heavy attack combo and killed him in three hits

Toeknee.. I have a problem. You showed a "free" gb after top block 10:10...that never works when I am doing it..never before. What am I doing wrong?? how does it work?..When I block and do gb imediatly..it can be countered by enemys...thats the case most of the time! ???

So for some reason when you show that first out of stam punish after I do the nature’s wrath it won’t lead me into an unblockable, is there a reason for that?
I was wondering if the guaranted top unblockable after the guard break was the best punish for a wall splat?

How do you perform that unblockable when you use the bottom of the sword?
They should nerf the stamina cost, so you can go into more mix ups (You are not always full stamina so if you are half a bar, you can literally do only one mix up...) and buff a little bit the speed of top heavy.
Monkey D. Luffy if they did that, he would honestly be broken at that point. This rework that he received if more than enough. Yea he could’ve used something but boy did they give him quite a bit. Can’t wait to see what they do for the Orochi. Because he needs something.

Shinobi, Orochi and Valkyrie needs a rework, they don't have a lot of tools, especially Orochi. Also Kensei counters the assassins due to his range and hyper armor, they can't dodge, so its only natural that you will struggle against Kenseis. But Kensei definetely needs a nerf to his speed at zone, some stamina increase and and most important, increase the speed on top heavy because heroes who have fast light attacks (if not all of them) can cancel your top heavy, and Kenseis mixups comes from top heavy.

Gotta work on them skills then man. Since watching this vid a week ago I don't think I've lost a match when playing Kensei. He is my main but I use him as a backup and practice others instead, pulling him out for those guys who are full of themselves and emote spamming. He has so much at his disposal now it even craps on the conqueror rework.

I have a question. If you do a light - light - then top heavy finisher, can you soft feint that heavy finisher into another combo?
All soft feinted attacks from the top heavy finisher end the chain
So why wasn't Helm Splitter in Top Heavy Unblockable the max OOS throw and parry punish before the rework? Or was it?
I'm not exactly sure, probably damage values were different and timings of attacks

Here, I try to getting good with heroes and mean while, my friend won't even read a moveset list and just spam unlock heavy attack with Kensei even tho I told him to read that goddamn moveset list.... smh 🤦🏻♂️
