    My close friends who made it home from their tours in ‘Nam would be back there with the opening chords of this song. CCR was quite simply the sound track for our lives. They still are.

    This song has an interesting legal historical footnote attached to it. In 1985, John Fogerty released his excellent solo album called Centerfield. The first single from that album was a song called The Old Man Down The Road. It was a virtual note-for-note remake of Run Through The Jungle with all new lyrics. CCR's old label Fantasy Records, whom Fogerty had been feuding with for years, sued him for plagiarism. The judge in the case ruled that a songwriter can't be convicted of plagiarizing his own song!! Therefore, an important legal precedent in the music industry!

      Specifically Fogerty was sued by Saul Van Zant who owned all of CCR’s recordings. The Centerfield album closed with a scathing number aimed directly at Saul called Vance Can’t Dance!

      As one of the others said, people *assume* it is about the Vietnam War. However, Fogerty wrote it about the proliferation of guns in the US ("200 million guns are loaded, Satan cries 'Take aim.'") We see Vietnam war movies now and these songs are the soundtrack -- just like they were for the real thing.
    But what surprised me was to learn how much these songs are still listened to in the areas around the Vietnam War, where so many soldiers stayed when things ended.
    I remember being in a bamboo-shack restaurant on stilts over the Mekong River, right between Laos and Thailand, eating Northern Thai curry while these CCR songs would belt out on the stereo above me -- and I was one of the only white people staying in that town of 2,000 in rural Thailand.
    This song brings me right back to that -- the Mekong River and seven weeks spent living in a whole other world on that riverbank. Music is so amazing.

  • @VideoRansack

    The song's title and lyrics, as well as the year it was released (1970), have led many to assume that the song is about the Vietnam War. The fact that previous Creedence Clearwater Revival songs such as "Fortunate Son" were protests of the Vietnam War added to this belief.[3]
    However, in a 2016 interview, Fogerty explained that the song is actually about the proliferation of guns in the United States.
    The thing I wanted to talk about was gun control and the proliferation of guns... I remember reading around that time that there was one gun for every man, woman and child in America, which I found staggering. So somewhere in the song, I think I said, '200 million guns are loaded.' Not that anyone else has the answer, but I did not have the answer to the question; I just had the question. I just thought it was disturbing that it was such a jungle for our citizens just to walk around in our own country at least having to be aware that there are so many private guns owned by some responsible and maybe many irresponsible people.[4]

      He said this in 2016, did he? Of course he did. He is now woke. 50 years ago and he was talking about gun control and I'm sure Who'll Stop The Rain was really about climate change. He didn't know how to express his true feelings in the 60s-70s because he was high, but praise the Lord he knows now. Thank you for the info.

    • @VideoRansack
      @VideoRansack 3 роки тому +1

      @@snakeinthegrass7443 MAYBE he was 'woke' before everyone else, since the US population in 1970 was 200 million ("Two hundred million guns are loaded"). So yeah - he knows now, and apparently he knew then.

    John Fogertys voice is an instrument unto itself. This is my favorite piece of music from CCR because of the simplistic masterpiece it paints of the Vietnam era atmosphere. You should check out his bayou impression of death on the track, 'The Old Man Down the Road'. And then close your eyes and really to the soul in his voice when he sings, 'One Hundred and Ten in the Shade', with the gospel group, the Fairfield Five. A truly stunning performance.

    This song and "Fortunate son" takes me back to my childhood. I am an old X-gener and most of us were the children or family of Vietnam vets, and the generation that first saw and experienced our parents and family that served treated like trash and left traumatized and broken. It wasn't to be spoken of, there was no real understanding of PTSD from war... CCR:s song at least gave some voice to it. I always have thought that growing up in that time is why so many X+gen wanted nothing to do with politics and the hypocrisy. Why there was the break from mainstream into grunge and alternative and heavy metal. We were angry and disillusioned. Some of us still are. At least music was a release and at least some bands like CCR told the tale that we needed to hear and validate what our families who fought in Vietnam went through. Okay, off my soap box. Glad you liked the song.

    You would love 'Green River' by CCR. I don't think you've listened to it yet. That song is (as per usual with CCR) such a vibe 💚

    Such good stuff from this era. Check out Steppenwolf's Magic Carpet Ride and John Prine's Spanish Pipe Dream.
