When I would say ah, the sound your doctor asks you to make when he puts a tongue depressor in you mouth (say ah) so he can look down your throat, a Chicagoan would say eh, the sound of the first part of the word every. I have a heavy delta drawl. It's where I grew up. After college, I lived and worked a couple of years in Chicago, same town where Hillary grew up. I've heard lots of regional accents, but the one that grates on my ears the most is the Chicago (especially Southside) pronunciation of the A sound. When I would say ah, the sound your doctor asks you to make when he puts a tongue depressor in you mouth (say ah) so he can look down your throat, a Chicagoan would say eh, the sound of the first part of the word every. When Hillary says "stehrt instead of Stahrt, or we've gone fehr instead of fahr, I cringe. It's funny that she can pretend to shuck and jive, but she can't hide that common eh sound and to me she comes off as a charlatan.
