Was there too. Enjoyed immensely. Resisted the GW sales pitch to pre-order Age of Darkness at full price but bought my brother Rogal in resin for way to much. No regrets. Plenty to fill 3 days.
This is always on the same weekend as Primavera, so I've never been. I have friends who go, but when the choice is music festival in Barcelona or a gaming con in Birmingham, it's an easy to pick one over the other.
@@AndrewMcColl To be fair, the British don't have a death cult running the country so their number of cases is down. You still have a lot of international travel at these sorts of things, though, which means you can run into people who are asymptomatic who haven't quarantined.
As an Englishman who moved to Asia, one of the things that I miss most are the frequent gaming conventions. I was a regular attendee at Salute and tried to get to Warfare and/or Colours as much as I could, but during convention season there averages one around every two weeks somewhere in the UK. Outside the UK/Europe they are just not as common and lack that middle ground between being big enough to have the diversity of seeing stuff thats new, while also small enough to feel friendly and get interaction with the games and people.
Did you check out Goblin King Games and their minis game Moonstone? If you didn't, I recommend a look-see. It's a great small scale skirmish with some gorgeous minis. A very Brian Froud style aesthetic. I've just bought into it, and I'm having a blast.
I was actually directly behind you in line at the bring and buy but I'm a new sub and wasnt confident enough that it was you! Damn it, should have gambled and said Hello :P
Looks like I missed both Guy and yourself, well glad you had a great time, was my first time and I was exhibiting so was great fun to meet so many fantastic people :)
I was there this year and in 2019. It may have actually been a bit bigger in 2019! Also some people may like to know that in addition to the big trade halls one of the NEC's hotels hosts RPGs over the expo, with various games running from 9am until midnight on the Friday and Saturday and from 9am to 6pm on the Sunday - so longer than when the trade halls are open. I'm pretty sad that I didn't get to meet you, or Guy or any of the other UA-camrs who were there! Finally, if you're planning to stay overnight next year it's probably wise to sort out your accommodation sooner rather than later, as the prices for rooms in the area (and probably for nearby AirBnBs and the like too) quickly ramp up.
I didn't get to see it all and I was there all three days for work alongside OnTableTop haha. Strangely enough but covering it with videos and stuff often means you don't get time to actually play games unfortunately. BUT, that being said - it was a bunch of fun and it's well worth going to for two or three days if you can. I think it's my favourite convention alongside the likes of AdeptiCon, Spiel and GenCon - Salute is deffo the one to go to for wargaming though as you say. Always like seeing the display tables. I really liked The Old King's Crown if you missed out on that one. Stunning art :)
In the US there are usually one or more local one day cons that pop up throughout the summer where you can get some quick demos for very little money and of course there are other conventions besides the big ones (that all seem to happen within a couple weeks of each other on opposite sides of the friggin continent) . BTW, When people hear us Americans complain about going to the other side of the country, remember that the Continental US is a bit bigger than Europe sans the Russian bit, so "Across the country" is like going from Galway to Istanbul With not nearly as nice scenery. The center of the US is known as the great plains for a reason.
Originally earlier in the year the plan was to go to this as the nec is very close to where I live. It certainly looks like other big shows I've been to at the nec in the past , where both days is a must. Though it looked quieter than the two biggest shows I'd tend to go to would typically be, but after the last couple of years typical is probably much changed. Unfortunately in February my body had other ideas and I've spent the time since slowly recovering from a broken ankle and leg. Hopefully next year I'll have enough mobility back for it to be viable.
Gods. Seeing shows like this always makes me a bit jealous. We can barely get non-GW games at the moment, let alone have a bunch of companies turn up for an event like this. Even in the before times the closest event to this was mostly video games, anime stalls and a dozen booths selling the same printed t-shirts in wildly misjudged sizes (mostly Small and Medium, with nothing above XL). Tabletop gaming was limited to people teaching MtG and that was it.
Been to the Stockholm version a handfull of times. Back when I went (ca. 1990-2005) it was everything from games to RC airplanes to model railroads iirc. Possibly split up into separate events nowadays tho.
I'd disagree about the bring and buy. It's well worth a look, just more so on the Friday or Saterday, since the good stuff gets snapped up quick, before its just the dreggs you can expect to get pretty new games or even weird old ones at half price or less.
Yeah your probably right. We did look on the Sunday. Most stuff I saw worth buying was equal or higher than eBay prices! Talisman TimeScape! Yay! £100…. Oh no thanks!
I went there on the Saturday and it was great fun. I never get why the bring and buy is so popular. There are always massive queues to drop off and to browse but people don't tend to put sensible prices on their second hand board games. I think what happens is the good stuff that are bargains get snapped up really quickly because there's always a massive queue to get in there on the Friday and Saturday mornings. I think by the Sunday a lot of people have gone home, so have taken their unsold stuff home, and you're just left with the overpriced stuff.
Always love your videos and if your coming this year 2023 would love to have you stop buy the band of brothers charity booth and see what all good we try to do with the hobby
Hey, Ian. Have you played any Malifaux? Me and some friends are just starting out. Wondered if you had a take on it? Loving the channel content by the way! Thanks!
Not been for a while. On entry, is there still the long wait to hand over your paper tickets? Or have they sorted that problem with scannable tickets to reduce entry ques? One of the reasons I haven't been for a while.
It was so awesome to meet you, matey! :)
Guy! I know that's unlikely, but how about Ian and you do some horus heresy painting videos together? I think that might be a lot of fun!
Was awesome to meet you and Gary! Thanks so much for stopping by for a game and chat.
Was there too. Enjoyed immensely. Resisted the GW sales pitch to pre-order Age of Darkness at full price but bought my brother Rogal in resin for way to much. No regrets. Plenty to fill 3 days.
Rogal is one of the best primarch sculpts for sure
@@odeegrotsniffer4166 but Mortarion is the best boy!
I am absolutely tickled to see my personal top three favorite Warhammer UA-camrs meeting each other.
Awesome to see so many cool people. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
"Back to the Heresy" I'm going to start saying that after breaks at work.
This is always on the same weekend as Primavera, so I've never been.
I have friends who go, but when the choice is music festival in Barcelona or a gaming con in Birmingham, it's an easy to pick one over the other.
Yep. The gaming con. No contest 🙄
Loved the review and my wife loves drag so Drags to Riches will be bought for sure.
I've was a fun little game - they're kick-starting now!
"Acquired a small child" good stuff, that!
Ian you're a machine! loving all the content :D
Glad you all had a good time. I'd definitely be interested in Gary's thoughts on the family games.
My FLGS owner picked up Covid while he was there so keep an eye out and hope you're well!
Yeah, the general lack of mask wearing in these videos is making me twitch.

Friday was mental all day, massive crowds everywhere

Went down on saturday, loved it! Achroma was a definite standout for me too! Also spent waay too much on minis, as expected.
Whoop whoop!

Saw you there and awkwardly said hello. Keep up the good work, your channel is the best 😊
Dang it so jelly. Was gonna enter the kill team tournament and everything.
I went in the mid 90s! I vaguely remember meeting Rick Priestly
Great little video, I'll have to give that Drags To Riches a look, might be a gateway game for the wife 🤣
Anjuli is one of my customers in the Nottingham store, she's wonderful! Glad you fine folks all know each other too :)
Saw a couple clips of myself demoing on Asmodee’s Unbox & Play section. It was a fab weekend!
another tower! I demand a Gary's Dice Towers review! :P
We were exhibiting for our first time, great convention.
I am immensely jealous that this sorta thing isn't where I live.

I thought that "shed on an industrial estate" was a pretty apt discription of most of Birmingham.
You’re such a cool lad. Hope I can catch you at an event like this some time! Cheers
Me and my 6yo were there on the Sunday, it was wicked, he loved it.
Some of the Haba games are truly excellent. Rhino Hero is a solid must for small children and drunk grown ups.
Sorry, couldn't be there. I live over 7000km away. Looks like fun was had. We don't have anything close in Canada as far as I know.
Looking at that footage, I'm missing SPIEL again...

I need to go to this next year :)
Chaos Marauders, both 1E 1986 and 2E 2009, got Claws of Malal deck lol
I was there selling roleplaying games! Might have seen you there at some point
Seriously, try to attend the Spiel in Essen, Germany. It is like this, but more. Much more.
The big ones in the US are Origins, happening the weekend, and Gen Con which is the biggest one outside of Essen in Germany if I remember correctly.
Big trade shows like that require planning to see everything.
So I missed you at London MCM Comic Con AND UKGE! I went to UKGE on Sunday though, not sure if you were still there.
No, we were only there on Sunday. Was at the beach on Saturday!
@@ArbitorIan To be honest, I'm a bit of a sociophobe anyway so might not have said much. I'm glad you had a great day!
HOLY CRAP GUY IS TALL!
For perspective, I am also short
I was there as a volunteer had a day off but did not see some of the stuff that was on your video, did see my back though bud.
It was great to meet you!! :D
You too, Discourse! Which reminds me, I really need to do a video for that Drag game, though I think I might have missed the Kickstarter! 😂
Did you check out the modiphius stand

"Flyover state"
Gary *acquired* a small child....as you do!
oh man I'll have to go next year

Quite the coincidence, saw myself playing First Rat there at 2 minutes 20ish :)

The stardew valley board game is a lot of fun hope you enjoy it
Dude! Don’t play DND! Play Warhammer roleplay with Guy/Discourse/Mira! I’d patreon for that :)
You mean there's a good representation of Birmingham?
brought some very stretchy bags did ya?! 😄

Like any car boot-esque event, if you're not there in the first 30 minutes all the good stuff is gone.
something similar in Canada? I'm guessing either Toronto or Vancouver would host this?
Always love your videos and if your coming this year 2023 would love to have you stop buy the band of brothers charity booth and see what all good we try to do with the hobby
You do know Northern Ireland is in the UK, right? Very dicey ( pun intended) topic there mate.

Better than fakkin Landan :p Took me a fecking hour to get 7 miles from Excel to the motorway to escape the place...!
Please do a D&D actual play on the channel!!!!!!!!
mildly shifty haha
I just like the sound of ur voice
