  • Thursday 15 November 2018 2130 hrs local time: On arrival at the check-in at Harwich International Port, Parkeston Quay, after the usual formalities of passport, pet declaration and cabin key, straight onto the Stena Ferry for the night crossing to Hoek van Holland/Hook of Holland aka The Hook. With the Pet Passport your dog can travel with you and stays in the kennels on the ferry (or in your car if you want, but I wouldn't recommend that). The kennels have CCTV and you can access the feed on your TV in your cabin. You can also access the kennels during the crossing and there is a small exercise area next to the kennel. I sometimes sit there with my dog(s) and bring a book or so. For a very short stay I ask my own vet to worm my dog(s), as the treatment is valid for up to 5 days before return. For longer stays I research availability of local vets abroad in advance and usually book an appointment straight away for the wormer. With the UK now not a member of the EU anymore things have changed, but I have read that if you have a EU Pet Passport your pet can still travel the usual way, otherwise you will have to get a certificate from your own vet in the UK, which of course is an expensive undertaking, as the UK Pet Passport is not valid anymore. The outward leg (be it ferry or Channel Tunnel) to the continent is usually an uncomplicated affair. Your pet will be scanned and documentation checked however before your pet is allowed back in.
