A lot of people were killed off but I suppose it's likely quite difficult to make a good story with such a large cast of characters.

Exactly, we are o.W.n Rebirth a new different community. The other one was evil and almost ruined Team Fortress 2.
Technically neither were good or bad, the old steam community just became toxic irl, but in the series neither side was bad.
Actually, The creator of the original own said that, if his series did end, it would most likely result in the own team fighting the robots of MVM
I didn't knew about that information, however these series are simply not related/connected to the old ones.
