Just to note, he's the 4th for no real reason, he's pretty much confirmed to be the strongest of the espada. Aizen had planned for Ulquiorra to fight Ichigo from the start as he knew about the second form and wanted to push Ichigo further to prove his point. So by making Ulquiorra the 4th, he can stay there and challange Ichigo whilst the top 3 go with Aizen to Karakura town
Also, it's poetic that Ulquiorra lost this fight and started to understand the human heart and in turn became a little more human, whereas Ichigo won by losing a little of his humanity
