If you're a barehand no-BG's guy, here are some tips: 1) get some ROSIN. That will keep your hands dry - sweat is the enemy when it comes to gripping a bat. 2) on a wood bat, try to get a bat with an unfinished handle - or you can even sand off the finish/paint on the handle/knob. 3) if you're doing it right, your hands should look pretty ugly with a bunch of calluses.
I've hit my entire baseball career with no gloves and tar until recently I started to use tar with no gloves. Not a lot of course, don't want sticky hands. Since I've hit this way for a good while I'm not afraid to swing hard even while getting rung up
Hot tip - PT + rosin is the answer for barehanders. Makes the grip tacky rather than sticky. PT will get slick in high humidity or when combined with sweat. The rosin will absorb all the moisture out of both the air and the PT, and just leave the grip feeling dry and grippy. Also, you can groove the handle with a bottle cap to give it a rougher texture. Also, for the hardest of hardcore out there: fine grit traction tape (like what is used on steps and ramps). Strictly for gameday-only use as it will rip through hands and gloves in about 30-40 swings, but if you dull it down with some sandpaper and soften it up with a thick layer of PT, it gives better grip than literally anything else on the market (and bonus, it will pretty much last forever).
It's about the ability to not grip the bat so tight. If you dont have gloves and or tar, you have to grip the bat tight, which adds tension in the forearms and reduces batspeed. This seems to be the real lesson from pitchers not being allowed to use tack substances as well, as they could throw harder when they didn't have to grip the ball as tightly.
@@angelvilla3996 his hands must be literal sandpaper from all that dirt, it certainly works, he only ever uses BGs if he's in a slump, and swaps back to rawdogging it once he's hitting again.
love the baseball bat bros! if i could ask for one thing - maybe a video about the different terms you use in the reviews? for example, it took me a few views to figure out what you were talking about when you said a bat was "whippy". or hitting a ball toward the hands. or why you'd prefer a stiff bat vs. one that flexes. a great primer video to help us folks who aren't as close to the terminology.
This seems like a comfort thing to me. I’ve switched back and forth between bg’s and bare hands a couple times in my career and it’s always whatever I’ve been doing more of that feels comfortable. That being said I don’t wear gloves but I wrap all my bats with gamma grips cause I just feel more connected to the bat if that makes sense. It’s also really hard for me to find gloves that fit comfortably which is a big factor I guess.
I notice some MLB guys who are constantly adjusting their gloves, even undoing them between swings. I think that for some players the gloves become as much a distraction as an aid.
I guess this comes down to how confident you are in swinging without batting gloves and no grip. People would feel hesitant to swing a bit without any grip so they wouldn't swing as hard as they can. That then causes the bat speed to fall a little bit as people aren't swinging their hardest. Batting gloves, with a grip and pine tar just creates a lot more confidence that the person can hold onto the bat and it won't slip at all which then allows them to swing as hard as they can.

Off topic, on a budget and want to get my son a new bat for his sophomore team. Going between the f5 and the atlas. Not a homerun hitter just yet, just want to get him a good bat. The atlas worth the money compared to the f5 in your opinion? Thanks and keep making great videos
Awesome video......Though saw more of John's whiter-than-white inner thighs (while wearing his "Daisy Dukes" )then I ever wanna see again. Still this was a great tutorial and would love to see more like this in the future. Rock on BBBB's 🤘😎
I think it comes down to being able to have a looser grip, and being able to really whip the bat through the zone without thinking about losing the bat.
Could be… But the bat bros say repeatedly in their other videos that their channel is based on unbiased reviews and sponsors defeat that purpose. I guess we can let them weigh in (hopefully).
i’ve always thought that i didn’t like how thick my wood bat handle felt, maybe it is because of the grip. I’m getting a new wood bat and I’m not gonna put a grip on it to see how i like it
Depends on the grip I do a very very light grip on my wood bats. Just 1 layer x tape and it's def the way to go gives the grip but doesn't make the handle feel any different
It seems like the tape just gets in the way, it is much better with wood to have less in between to just get better control. Overall i think this is really good data tbh.
We use wood for slowpitch. I'm a bigger fella, 5'8'' 240 walking around weight 212 on stage, and bare hands no grip and rock the ball all day. Finding gloves big enough is the issue. Might try tar this next summer.
I've experimented with tackies and grip substances. I've tried bat tape, 3m spray glue, hairspray, strongman tacky, flexseal, and even plastidip. I've noticed that the best setup is actually unfinished wood, tacky/pine tar and batting gloves. If you want better vibration dampening, plastidip is good to dip the handle in, or just get some meat on your hands. One thing to help avoid blisters is to apply weightlifting chalk to your bare hands, even inside the glove. It helps grip, absorbs sweat/oils, and skin tugging. Unfinished wood help absorb sweat and oils from your hands and REALLY does well with pine tar.
I never used batting gloves.. was the only one on our team who didn't. I had the highest batting average, by quite a bit - less strikeouts, more doubles, tied for triples - everything except the most home runs. No pine tar, either.
What you need to consider is having adequate tar on the left or bottom hand and a much lighter amount on the right or top hand…. Too much on that top hand I find that it restricts movement and EV. The best in my opinion is wood bat and batting gloves, heck with the tape. Also those of you who have not included a 1oz puck handle you are missing out. My AP5 Marucci 33” feels like a 32”…. It is pretty remarkable.
I despised batting gloves, I loved using my bare hands because I wanted to feel the bat and the ball. Gives me feedback and I never would of been the hitter I was off I used batting gloves. Even when I swung wood, ok couldn't use batting gloves. Felt weird. Put some sports tape on my fingers. Done. I felt I had no feeling it control in my hands with gloves on.
I don’t think it makes a difference most of the time. It’s a confidence thing. If it’s raining or a really hot day you probably do get a better grip with gloves and pine tar. The size of the handle width makes a big difference. If you have a thicker barrel and small hands it will slip.easier. I got for thinnest handle I can get.
Love the videos! Would like to send you a wood bat I designed that has Grooves in the handle. Dramatically reduces shock, U of Mass Lowell testing happening soon. Carlo Cooper, Cooper Groove.
I notice you pull the ball better with the gloves. Aren'f they an easy sell? (Who doesn't wear them these days?) Still, I remember seeing Ted Williams (last player to hit .400) grip the bat bare, his fingers playing the handle like a piano. (One tiny correction: as kids we used dirt or sand as an aid to gripping a wood handle.)
I am in Little League I am 10 years old. I swing drop eights sevens and sometimes I do use drop tens but I think that’s because I’m just use more power what I can hit a home run on a 12u field easily
Athletic tape works fine with pro grip or pine tar and gloves - high-end gloves will just be eaten up faster, cycle in some less expensive/quality gloves
If we would have put all that shit on a bat and ournhands just to hit a ball our coach probably would have kicked us off the team lmao😂😂, Easton reflex with regular athletic tape on handle and 1 batting glove was our norm lol

Gripping it lighter just allows you to practice longer and focus on your mechanics more as well.

Any chance we get a video comparing different bat size exit velo? 32v33v34?
They’ve done it already
Bgs and tar is my setup as well for baseball. For softball I just use gloves and grip tape.
Great video will, would love to hear your thoughts on pro hitters
Do you have any tips for me of how to improve my exit velocity my high is 73 at 12 years old
what is the oldest select pwr that is good?

do a video where you compare all of the pine tars like tiger stick, the one you used in this video, the pine tar mat and the marucci pine tar
It's all preference at the end of the day. I go no BGs mostly cause I grip the bat better when I have skin on a bat grip.
Awesome video! Great explanation, hope some young sluggers take note.
not sure if you have done this yet but i would be interested in lightweight endloded vs heavy balanced

nah the whole point of tar is that it makes batting gloves stick to the grip tape really well. Tar wears off of hands super easily when they sweat
The bat grip causes compression which slows the ball down.
