  • It's the annual New Years Day party with that North Beach musical institution, Blues Power, at the legendary Saloon (established 1861), the oldest continually operating drinking establishment in San Francisco. The blues, booze, and good will flows, along with beans, ham hocks and rice, and other tasty vittles to tickle the happy tummies of the Saloonatics, as the regulars are affectionately known. Presidential candidate, Hoover Gee, drops down and reluctantly takes the pole position in the increasingly crowded 2008 election field. San Francisco poet laureate, Jack Hirschman, also pops in and verses up the enthusiastic crowd with a musical poem for '08. And the winter sun shines warmly on that first Tuesday afternoon of the New Year.

Great! The Saloon is the most authentic Blues Bar I know of. Your feet stick to the floor, and the sink in the men's room is coated with cocaine. (Not really all the time, but sometimes.) A GREAT place, and the neighborhood is not dangerous. Wonderful food within a few feet, and several venues for damned good music every night of the week.
