    Lyrics:
Who’s that whisperin’ in the trees
It’s two sailors and they’re on leave
Pipes and chains and swingin’ hands
Who’s your daddy? Yes I am
    Fat cat came to play
Now he can’t run fast enough
    You had best stay away
When the pushers come to shove
    Zoot Suit Riot
Throw back a bottle of beer
    Zoot Suit Riot
Pull a comb through your coal black hair
A whipped up jitterbuggin’ brown eyed man
A stray cat frontin’ up an eight-piece band
Cut me sammy and you’ll understand
In my veins hot music ran
You got me in a sway
And I want to swing you dove
    Now you sailors know
Where your women come for love
You’re in a Zoot Suit Riot

wow this is a nostalgia trip. I was a 15 year old highschooler when the Big Band/Swing revival happened. Now I am 41, and I miss it and my youth. To live during the 90s were, to sum it up in one word: Magical.

I wish i would have known about swing music when i was much younger. I played trumpet in grade school and junior high. I was very good at it but got so bored if it. If i was exposed to this, id kept playing and tried to be in a band like this. When this came out i was already mid to late 20's. I was kicking myself in the ass for not staying with it. I loved this when it came out. Big bad voodoo daddy, squil nut zippers, lee presson and the nails. So much fun ! Still love it in 2023

That period in the late 90's with swing and ska both coming back in a big way was really special for horn players, no question. But the other reply is right: Nothing at all stopping you from picking up your axe and playing it, and there is still swing and jazz going on in all sorts of corners of the world because the music is just that good.

I was 14 when this song came out and I remember saying their band name to my dad and he was so embarrassed, the way he always got when anything sexual would be brought up or come on tv or anything like that when we were around each other, and he just looked at me and said “don’t say that anymore! Do you even know what that means??! Of course you don’t know what that means do just don’t say it anymore….” Lol 😂 dads always get so awkward around their daughters when shit like that happens, now that I’m older it’s hilarious watching them tryna figure out how to navigate that extremely uncomfortable terrain lol and band names like the cherry poppin daddies doesn’t help much lmao 🤣

Every instance of "beer" in the lyrics was muted out during the broadcast, but the guys in charge of the dump button weren't always on-time. I took three girls to my prom and we all walked in together and I was decked out in my zoot suit, hat and chain and everything, and this song was definitely playing in my head. It was 2004 and these were the halcyon days…

This song, done in instrumental only of course has long been a staple of our local high school's pep band. When my older daughter was a cheerleader there was a kid in the band who would wear a violently blue zoot suit and the two of them would swing dance while the band played.

I discovered this song in 2014 during college when I saw Urban Legend… as soon as I heard this song in the background I knew I found something epic. I grew up listening to Benny Goodman and was surprised to find out these guys formed in the late 80s/early 90s. Love it

Love this song. The thing that impressed me the most when I first heard it was the bass player. I play bass and don't think I could handle this line. It's not that it is super fast or anything, but the guy's note choices are just crazy. And they fit perfectly. But nearly incomprehensible for my brain to get around that almost random walking he does. Very cool song.

Zoot suits - using extra fabric to be very large, when the wartime effort needed all the resources it could get.
No excuse to start a riot, but when someone has been at sea for months, fighting, with no women around, they might be upset at others having a good time at home "now you know where your women come for love". Again, I am not condoning the attacks, but explaining why they occurred.

    • @notoriouswhitemoth
      @notoriouswhitemoth 2 місяці тому +2

@skovner You left out an important detail: the kids were Mexican, their clothes had no bearing on the US military's logistics.

The song was written in 1997 but there actually were zoot suit riots. Since 1943 it’s been illegal to wear a zoot suit in LosAngeles. It’s not enforced anymore. They were racially motivated attacks by U.S. military men on black and Hispanic males who were wearing zoot suits. Finally the servicemen were confined to base and wearing zoot suits was made illegal.
