Something I don't see mentioned in any of these kinds of videos is: what are you doing DURING the painting process to preserve the brush? Is there a timer in your head for how often to shake the brush off in the water? How often are you going back to the water to clean off the brush, even if you aren't changing color? Do you change your water out a lot to avoid putting the brush into dirty paint water?
These are excellent questions. For me, once I can't paint smooth, sharp lines, that means the brush is losing moisture and it's time to dunk it in water. I pour out the water at the end of every painting session. This works well for me, but I am not an expert painter and I am eager to hear how others manage it.
I'm so happy you're using your dry brush on the wet pallette! I've been doing it for a while now and people call me mad! But it works. You just have to be careful its not too wet.
I perked up when you mentioned the Artify brushes. I got them last year and they are still great. The dampening pad is also really nice and useful. I find them to be only a small degree above cheap dispensable make up brushes, but since they are not synthetic, they hold moisture better and deliver smoother finishes. I really like them, not bad at all
I did not know about not putting paint on a dry brush and the need to pre wet it first. I've never understood why I couldn't get decent paint flow, as per online videos, and now I've seen an instant improvement in my painting!
My boi mentioned capillary action! 20:12 such an important thing to mention when teaching brush care. Capillary action can destroy a brush and can shoot paint into the ferrule
After trying W&N series 7 and Raphael 8404 it is actually Da Vinci Maestro Series 35 gets my shout - absolutely excellent. Holds a point very well, long bristles with good snap and good body for loading with paint without being too full/wide and obscuring your view
I’m glad someone finally said the truth about artist opus brushes. Way overpriced and not all they’re cracked up to be. I own several and never use them. Classic hobby gouging
yep good point not really talked about I see people many times painting forever with small brushes without realising that small brushes leave more strokes and, carrying far less paint, make it far more difficult to wet blend. The shape of the brush is also quite relevant in my opinion, flat brushes can be very useful too on occasion but they are rarely in the arsenal of miniature painters.
Gracias por el vídeo Juan, no te creas que es aburrido a mi me ha servido, desde que te conozco cambié de pinceles y los rafhael y Rosamary es lo mejor que he probado, muchas gracias ❤

Last batch I received about year ago 1 out of 3 was good other ones couldn’t hold a point. Loved Broken toad so sad they left the business. Series 7 I need to buy it in person other wise is a dice roll. Same with few of the other brands. What I am using right now is Monument Hobbies brushes and they have been working great for me. Now for Dry Brushes Monument have them but I still prefer Opus. So for Dry brushing i am stuck with Opus. But as I type this. I’m ordering some of the Artify. I’m going to try them out. Thank you for the video always nice to pick the brain of people doing what you love doing.
Raphael FTW! I bought the Artify drybrushes off Amazon for a fantastic price. Rosemary & Co postage is painful to Australia so I doubt I'll buy them again. Plus their size 1 is more like a 0 compared to my Raphael brushes.
"Do synthetic brushes dream of electric sable?" 😂 I have to drop a comment just thank you for that (on top of giving us another great informative video). Well played, sir!

When a size has a "/0" after is it means it's smaller than a 0. For example a 2/0 means 00, a 4/0 is 0000 Sizes go like this: ... 3, 2, 1, 0, 2/0, 3/0...
I never use a brush smaller than a size 1 or 2 depending on the brand. Most of the things I paint are done with a size 3 or 4. Anything smaller than a 0 is useless for acrylic painting
Really nice video. Learned a few things and I can also recommend Rosemary & Co brushes after having tried them out on Juan's recommendation. Still wondering about a few things though. How often do you clean your water for cleaning brushes? I tend to leave mine for quite some time and while the brush gets clean just fine, sometimes by using another less dirty pot of water, does that in fact still fill up the ferrule with paint over time? Also, my brushes tend to shorten over time as well, it's not just losing the tip because of worse cohesion between the bristles, but also because the tip wears off. I believe it is normal, but it never seems to get mentioned in these kind of videos, so I'm not 100% sure.
Buenos dias Juan. Regsrding the Rosemary & co brushes. Do you buy them from Britain and then pay the exorbitant customs and import fees to get them delivered to Spain? I am based in Slovenia and the last time i bought something from the UK it cost me 5 times as much in customs and import fees. Would love to buy through your link, but not if they're only available from Britain.
Sadly yes. That being said the last time I checked Rosemary automatically applied the custom charges into the price so you shouldn't get any surprises.
late to the game seeing this video, would you or anyone in the comments have recommendations on where to purchase the top 3 brushes you mentioned you use in the videos? You give a really good argument about how Artis Opus is pretty much the exact same brushes you recommend, but over priced. As someone who was REALLY pondering getting the Artis brushes, any recommends here on where to purchase would be fantastic. thanks anyone who see's this!
You can just buy them from the Rosemary webpage if you want Rosemary brushes. Windsor and Newton and Raphael are better bought in person in an art store.
Im buying them with direct delivery from Rosemary to Singapore, it's another side of the planet, not an issue of Brexit Of course doesn't make sense for 1 brush, but totally reasonable even for 3-4
Storing a properly cleaned and paper towel dried brush with the bristles facing up will absolutely not cause paint to pool in the ferrule. There shouldn't be any 'dirty water' left in the bristles in the first place, but even if there is - capillary action will ensure the moisture stays exactly where it is. Gravity is nowhere near strong enough to work against capillary action with such a small amount of moisture. Hanging brushes upside down to preserve is one of those things that sounds great in theory, but has no practical impact. Just a minor gripe, but otherwise, great video!
Hello Juan, I love your work & channel & really appreciate all you post. Wish I had enough $ to fund your patreon. I hope you still check these posts on older videos. I have a Series 7 Winsor Newton brush, size 00 that is brand new. From the very 1st use, the point has splayed apart & won't keep a sharp point. Occasionally, I have had other brushes do the same -right out of the box. The brush hairs can't keep a point but rather splay into all different directions. Any idea why this is? Cheers
I think for me the best brushes I’ve used have to be the Da Vinci Maestro Series 10, followed by Raphael 8404. But you know what’s wicked close IMO? Monument Hobby Sables that are quite cheaper in comparison. The Series 10 and Monuments can be swapped and if you want a bigger belly, go with the Raphaels. Also I tend to steer clear of anything smaller than a “0” size, no matter what I’m painting. Sadly W&N s7 was the worst brush I ever owned and returned it two days later. When your brush splits when it’s inundated with water, and ONLY water, it’s a dog-$hit brush. Also not indicative of their past quality but their QC has been very terrible lately. Fantastic video by the way, I will have to snag some of those Artify Dry Brushes
I've been painting with Synthetics for 3 years, and I actually find it hard to switch to natural brushes. I have a couple of Raphaels and they feel too soft to me, no resistance at all. They just flatten on the miniature as soon as I touch it...
Which synthetics do you use? I’m trying to switch from sables after going vegan and I’ve found that contrary to what Juan says there’s a big difference between cheap synthetics and more expensive ones
@@GeoffreyPeas I buy a pack of 60 brushes from A (can't type full name because UA-cam doesn't like it). I use Tshaoun fine detail brushes. I actually don't agree that they're all the same - I bought some really crappy ones in art stores before. I also use ZKSM 9-piece detail brush set - the one that comes with 000-0 sizes, 3x each. These hold great tip and are good for fine detail. )
I would also love to know which ones you use. And for how long (hours) you can use them before the tip deforms. I use Escoda Perla synthetic brushes and they are pretty good. They are about €5 each, so not the cheapest ones. But after an hour or 5 of painting, the tip does not hold. I do use them for everything though, so I might want to start having dedicated ones for details and don't use those for anything else.
Fellow vegan here, i like Forte Synthetics by Da Vinci as my "allday brushes", Colineo by them are much more expansive, so i use them on special occasions :D cheap synthetics by Amazon from China are risky, sometimes the brush tip dies quickly or they are losing hair.
@@GeoffreyPeas I was trying to reply but youtube keeps deleting my replies. So I can't help you. Every time I type in product name it deletes everything it seems
All good advice especially up until you had to give in to the brain rot, disgusting and dangerous meme of brush licking. You mentioned yourself oil paints at the beginning FFS, it's not just disgusting, it's toxic (same for heavy body acrylics). I'm an adult and not a novice painter anymore but new people and/or kids watching you may take it seriously and not as a meme. Saliva is more acidic than tap water and will wear the brush but since you take care of them, store them properly and probably use a different one each time since you buy in bulk, you may not see it but it does. What this video really misses is the differences in brushes (fat belly and long bristles, small belly and short bristles, etc) and why it matters and the fact that all brands have different sizes so holding the brush in hand and comparing visually before buying is necessary to find "your" brush. Shops for artists materials are perfect for this since you can hold and compare them and ask the staff questions about the rest of the materials. Soap brush is cheaper there than "mini painter" that is overpriced (just like Artis Opus brushes lol)
This is not meant as an insult, but the cringy/pervy humor of your videos diminishes their value to me as a viewer. I think your painting tutorials are incredible, and I've learned a lot from many videos. I just wish you'd focus solely on that instead of cheapening your videos with humor that feels very out of place. I imagine I'm in the minority here, but just sharing honest feedback as I value your talent and tutorials.
I would say yeah you are in the minority as a lot of channels do this in the painting space, even out of the painting space. Heck one I never thought would do it was a super professional TV/Monitor Channel called HDTVtest. He is always doing wife jokes and sex jokes throughout an otherwise very professional review. That said nothing wrong in not liking it and expressing that in the comments, after all that's what they are there for.

They are about €5 each, so not the cheapest ones. But after an hour or 5 of painting, the tip does not hold. I do use them for everything though, so I might want to start having dedicated ones for details and don't use those for anything else.
Fellow vegan here, i like Forte Synthetics by Da Vinci as my "allday brushes", Colineo by them are much more expansive, so i use them on special occasions :D cheap synthetics by Amazon from China are risky, sometimes the brush tip dies quickly or they are losing hair.

great video.
Thanks
Had to give a thumbs up just for the thumbnail
Thanks
Where can I get copies of the thumbnail? 🤭
That's content exclusive for my Only fans
You are the best ~
I KNOW!
great content
Thanks
Ah yes, the classic punk album: "Never Mind the Bristles, Here's the Tip Painters" 😀
😂
Rosemary are my go to brushes as well. Some painters suggest using acrylic brushes to apply contrast paint and washes. What are your thoughts on this?
No, I use old kolinskys for that
Compulsive like!
Big Brush Basil Brush.
Yes, It matters. Now explain me why It matters or not in brushes 😂
Hello juan
You should have kept the music playing until you put the brush in the plastic piece
You really get me
@@JuanHidalgoMiniaturesthe eye contact was weird at first but got more comfortable as time went on
Yo is that a @miniac brush coffin? That's for the real ones.
It is indeed
Oh boy that thumbnail 😅
You realize that you caused me trauma when you mashed that brush on the pallet (held back tears).
Trust me, it hurt me more
Ojalá hiciese los videos en castellano 😢😅

Tell us the truth ! The citadel artificer brush in your "old brushes box" is brand new :p
Far from the truth! It was my favourite brush for a long time when I didn't knew better

I second this sentiment. Its too much at times.
Good call. I am not really bothered by it because I ignore it, but I agree the videos would be at least equally valuable without those jokes.
Thanks for the feedback!
Sometimes my sense of humour can be a double edge sword.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Okay I have taken a bit more though about it. That and your reply may have catalysed an appreciation of your humor on my side.
ALWAYS wet your brushes before touching any paints.👈
